Dangerous Parking - Do you call someone ?

Staying back in Ireland for 6 months, one thing I've noticed is people seem to park where they like when they like with little regard for others.
Sitting down having a Coffee and I noticed this guy just stop his car, stick on his hazards and then get out with a bunch of signs and a crate.

    B-dh-2OIYAAet18.jpg:large

He then left the car here for 30 minutes while he went around taking his time putting up the signs (you can see one on the pole to the left)

Because of his car being left in a stupid position, cars had to move around his car also cyclists had to either go up on the footpath, or wait for a gap in the traffic to go around his car.

To make things worse, there is plenty of parking around 5 meters to the left of his car.

It's not the first time I've seen this carry on around Cork either, people just seem to leave their car on bends, double yellow lines, blocking entrances.

Who do you call in this situation ? Is there a parking warden number or something ?

Should you approach someone directly and tell them they should move ?

I believe the clampers have the ability to tow cars for a nice fine to the owner.

It happens on the likes where a person in a parking space is pig ignorant and doesn't Park properly and leaking a fair bit into the road.

In this case the driver wouldnt care, as he would be a martyr for the cause if he was caught and all of the sheep would praise him for sticking ut up to the government.

If that irritates you, never visit Longford. Ever.

There's a chipper on the main street and it's not unusual to see triple parking outside it with double parking fading into just regular bad parking the further you get from it in any direction.

That's along with the "I'll just stop here and whack on the double flashers" attitude that seems to be shown literally everywhere in the town. All while there is a massive car park off the main st., a 3 min walk to most places. Amazing.

wow, there's nothing but car parks there! Wilton shopping centre immediately to the left and locall shops to the right. CUH directly opposite!

If you really want to get him ring the litter warden and get his signs taken down, there are strict rules about putting up signs on public poles and fines for violating it.
    Q. What penalties are in place for breaches of the legislation governing election/referendum posters?

    A. The responsibility for enforcement of litter law lies with the local authority. Any election/referendum posters in place before or after the stipulated timeframe are deemed to be in breach of the legislation and are subject to an on-the-spot litter fine of 150 euro. Local authorities are also responsible for the removal of posters which constitute a hazard to either pedestrians or road users. Complaints about such posters should be made directly to the appropriate local authority stipulating their exact location to enable local authorities arrange for their removal.

I'll hold my hands up and say I had to park like this last night as there isnt much parking on Wm St in Limerick. Last night was busy for some reason and there was loads of cars parked illegally along the right hand lane and no parking elsewhere and I had to pick up some grub so I parked behind them albeit with my hazards on. I didnt block a ped crossing either.

But the one instance above is bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 816 ✭✭✭zurbfoundation

well he put his hazard lights on, didn't he? In Ireland, that generally excuses where you abandon the car.

Had a great one 2 weeks ago on Upper Rathmines Road while going to fishmongers and deli. Parked and paid (even tho would be there for less than 20 mins not interested in hassle) and crossed the road. A guy flies over behind me and parks on the corner (yes actually on the corner) on double yellows right behind a car in a parking space. Thing is there were about 5 empty spaces in front of that car. Wasn't sure if he could see the empty spaces and mentioned it to him. Ever so politely he tells me it's none of his business, despite the three offences he's just committed. I suggest he might show a better example to his son and he harrumphed and walks past the 5 empty spaces and up to the shops.

Hard to see other than sheer ignorance why he would not have parked in the spaces as they were closer to his destination. It's one of those times when you wish for a law permitting passersby to deflate the tyres of the offending car. I went about my business (3 shops) and his car was still there when I left (as we're at least 3 of the 5 empty spaces).

    Knob.

In general drivers tend to park as close to their destination as possible.

I see it in shops, petrol station etc - they would park inside if they could, but since they can't they just park in front of the entrance:confused:

That car was parked as close to the first pole as possible:D

I meet this every morning on the way to work same car same place every morning. I think he is picking someone up for work .
Its dangerous no doubt, if he only switched off the lights while been parked there it might make it a little safer .
Its on a long straight stretch of narrow country road.
Apart from it been bad parking is there law that says its wrong here ?
    It is illegal in Germany.

Surely someone should be tweeting them the picture? I'm sure they have a facebook page too.

I'd imagine in the interests of fairness they'd want everyone's indiscretions exposed, their own included?

EDIT, it would seem the proper place is as a direct reply to their tweet about the posters going up.

Dont think Garda much help regarding parking issues from my experience.

Mallow GAA been having few big games recently and have people guiding cars parked up on pavements on both sides of st josephs road and also parked up on the house's front grass, leave very little room to get out of drives and cars down the road. Truck got stuck on road for half hour. Gardai came, looked, drove off and came back again 20 mins later and drive off again.

Not just GAA, funerals at cemetary and the rugby club visitors do same.

Why? Because there's no parking for such a busy place. It can't be helped unless they built a multistorey next to the Courts for Court use only.

The guy that parked in the picture was stupid. He should have planted three quarters of the car up on the path if he had to pull in there for a couple of minutes. But a half hour in a lane like that? Ridiculous.

But Clancy, I'll always find it devious for people to be ringing the authorities for stuff like that. It smacks of busybody behaviour and sets a very dangerous precedent for the way people behave toward one another. It'll never sit well with me.

Your second suggestion is what you should do in those situations imo.

    "Illegal":rolleyes:

People that trot that kind of stuff out strike me as folk who simply must not live in the real World or are simply lying to make a (silly) point.

What about this scenario: What if a guy is going around taking down signs and has to park on a path for a couple of minutes to take one down? If he leaves the car out on a narrow road, traffic would be backed up around the corner because there's no room for two-way traffic to pass?

Try being a van delivery driver in Dublin/Cork/Limerick etc city center for a week and you'll soon see that living your life out of a rule book is impossible.

We don't need hypothetical situations when we have a perfect example right here.

What about this scenario: The guys goes and finds somewhere proper to park, or is walking denying his his human right to abandon his car wherever he wants?

Ive driven delivery vans all around Dublin city and county.

I've already answered that mate. It was ridiculous doing what he did. If he had to pull in for a couple of minutes to take down a sign then he should have planted most of the car on the path while he was up the pole (ooh matron). Surely you wouldn't suggest someone go and park in a car park if they had one sign to take off a fecking poll? C'mon now, time to quit the nonsense.

People throwing out the term "illegal" as if that's the panacea to every real life situation is just claptrap.

If you've delivered to shops around Dublin city center then you've broken the law multiple times despite you saying that if something's illegal it should never be done!

Since erecting the sign was illegal, the parking was consistent.
Still, the litter warden can get his number from this thread and deal with the first issue.

Go there at night time, thats where most people end up dumping their cars for the takeaway to the left of the picture,i'm not sure is it people getting food from there or is it the delivery guys parking on the road. It isn't so bad at night time,as there'd never be so many cars coming out of the shopping centre for it to get royally blocked up by the parking. First time I saw it I thought it was a queue for the traffic lights, but every time after I knew it was for the Chinese.

It isn't the right thing to do, dumping the car there, but I don't think it would get to me so much that i'd feel the need to take pictures of it. If you turned around 180 degrees you would see a pub, with double yellows outside it,and cars parked on them, traffic manages fine, same goes for the church. I don't mind cars parked on double yellows once a bit of common sense is applied

It normally wouldn't bother me but the only reason I noticed it was because a car was beeping and when I looked over a cyclist had a narrow miss because he had to go around this parked car on the bicycle lane. Then a few other cyclists had to stop and go around or go up on the footpath.

Also cars were merging in on top of each other.

I don't really care about the legality of it, its just common sense you don't leave your car someplace that creates a situation which is dangerous.

Even in a place that does not have marked parking spaces I would make sure that my car doesn't cause an obstruction or make it difficult someone else to go about their business.

    I'm sick of this excuse

actually there's loads of parking on Conyngham Road; literally 50/100m from where that car was parked. Plenty of Gardai do make the effort to park there. They don't even have to bother paying...

There's also the Phoenix Park - no shortage of space there - except they park in the bike lane when there's a massive unused space in the middle of the road they could use.

    (see the hatched space
    https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.348625,-6.297351,3a,75y,281.01h,85.51t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1soUSpUYcDXz0kB9UWbYbjOg!2e0

If they gave a rats ass about the general public they could ask for that area to be cordoned off; it reminds me of Regent's Park in London - there's a nice parking space in a similar space

Stopping on a double yellow for delivery/collection (unloading/loading) is not an offence unless there is also a No Loading sign. Pulling up onto the footway is always unlawful, regularly dangerous and creates inconvenience.

Both parked illegally putting up signs, I mailed the County Council and they said they don't deal with this area and they forwarded it to the City Council which replied with the message above.

I'm just a bit perplexed that they would go sticking posters on lamp posts all over the place without permission.
