    That looks quite well actually.

While it's nice enough looking and a huge improvement over the current Superb, the VAG cars are starting to look more and more alike with each year..

Was always a big fan of the Mk.II Superb myself, this is a huge improvement, looks great!

Beautiful...just a pity that the majority sold in Ireland will be 1.6 diesels

All that car in a small engine with low output :(

Improved on the outside but a big Octavia on the inside. Have to agree with r3nu41, 1.6 tdi rules the roost.

Agreed, I see a bit of Audi in it as well as the latest Passat. That being said it's probably the best looking Skoda I've seen, the latest Octavia vrs is very nice also.

What about the estate. These always looked better in the estate.

looks alot better than the old one!

Styling is very like the new octavia inside.. friend bought a 170bhp 151 Octavia in january.. lovely car... its amazing how much room there is inside them... 1.6 is underpowered in the octavia so lost in the superb.. the 140 was just about acceptable but the 170 is very nice :)

This is the first skoda I've seen where there hasn't been seemingly deliberately uglified.
This will definately put it up to rivals, even convert a few passat/a4 drivers.
I wonder how they'll price it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,812 ✭✭✭mailforkev

I'm also surprised they were allowed keep it looking like that by the Wolfsburg suits.

It's sharper than the current A4/A6. In those pictures at least.

Ain't this the truth. It's a big improvement over the current saloon and genuinely good looking, but overall I find VAG designs completely derivative at this stage. Not really impressed by what they've shown of the interior, particularly the touchscreen which is too far down on the console on the current model and I wish they had raised it up.

Estate isn't launching till 2016, so I wouldn't be expecting to see it for a while.

yeah, the 2L 150 and 190 bhp versions for the extra E10 a year in motor tax are just pointless

    http://www.independent.ie/life/motoring/car-news/superb-show-as-new-skoda-puts-on-the-style-30999947.html
For Ireland the prime engine will be the 1.6TDI (up to 120bhp from 105bhp, 100g/km, €180 road tax, 3.9l/100km).

    Then there is the 2.0TDI (up to 150bhp from 140bhp, 105g/km, €190 road tax, 4l/100km). And there's a 2.0TDI, 190bhp (106g/km, €190 road tax, 4l/100km). They also have a high-performance 2.0 TSI petrol with 280bhp. The engine line-up mirrors that of the new Passat.

No prices yet. I'm expecting the new car to be significantly worse value than the current model, especially in terms of standard kit. The price of the Passat is ****ing horrendous when you start adding the options and I wouldn't expect this to be far off to avoid cannibalising sales.

Looks well.. it's definitely closed the gap between it and its Passat/A4 cousin. Not much between them now really from an exterior point of view.

The interior looks very much like a B6/B7 Passat now as well which isn't a bad thing either.

I think VAG are walking themselves into a problem though.. with the "lower" end of the family looking increasingly like the upper end with the same features and options, why would people pay extra?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

I like the exterior, it's a massive improvement on the outgoing model.

The interior doesn't look great though. It's like a bumped up Octavia which doesn't have the nicest dash. With the smaller display (presume the 6" used by the Passat in more basic form) it's going to look very spartan and bare with a lot of shiny black plastic around it.

Couldn't agree more. Depending on pricing this may be a massive own goal by Skoda, then again that's maybe what VW want:rolleyes:

Honestly, looking at it again and it seems harsher and more spartan than the current car. The door area in particular looks worse.

Looks very americanised. Could sell that in the U.S. market without the typical minor style alterations.

I can't wait to see what the estate looks like.

i've almost 200k kms on my markII superb combi and apart from consumables the only thing i've had to replace was the water pump after about 170km. I was considering changing it but with that milage on it i would be worth feck all and is costing me nothing so i'll keep her going until she stops .... also it's the dreaded 1.6tdi and hasn't killed me yet. I've even managed to over take people on back roads ..shocking .. and managed to get to the south of france every summer fully loaded with kids and luggage without dying.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Will be interesting to see how this Superb is priced, the current one starts off at around €26k whereas the new Passat starts off at a shade under €29k. The new Superb will need to be close to the price of the old one and have more standard kit to attract people from just buying the Passat.

Thats a market theyre interested in at the moment. Bob flavin who reports for the indo drove one around the US for a bit.

I never gave skoda much of a notice until I rented a 2014 superb in romania a few weeks ago, was the 170 2.0 tdi with the dsg box and fully loaded. I have to say it was very nice to drive, the finish on it was great and it had a lot of little features that my 7 series does.

If this came in a large petrol engine with 4wd / rwd it would definitley be on my list to consider.

Heard they will be around 10% dearer than the outgoing model.

What I am wondering is when will they be available to order.:P

    I'd argue the opposite.

    Please do.

I would have thought it is indeed no longer the poor man's VW Audi, rather separating only those influenced by brand marketing/snobbery, and those judging a car on its merits and genuine value.

We are toying with either a 150BHP Passat Variant or the 140BHP Superb Combi in Ambition trim but with 18's and the rear windows with the privacy option. The PCP rates of interest means there is €4 a month in the difference so it is down to choice and I think the Passat is stealing it on looks/finish but the Superb wins on practicality also the difference in the GMV is minimal but I reckon a 3 year old Passat will win out there.

    any thoughts?

Styling and looks are all very fine, but, how do Skodas' in general run. What are they like mechanically and electronically, in other words are they a reliable car?

They're built on vw platforms. They're not using previous generation mechanicals or anything

Not sure of the accuracy but a friend who works in an nct centre reckons skoda have the highest pass rate of cars being tested.. No figures to back it up mind...

Re the poor mans audi.. The one place the superb wins out is interior space...

I do think the interior in the new octavia was a step backwards from the last one.. It just looks lighter and sparser inside if that makes any sense?

Also as I've stated a friend bought a 151 170bhp superb elegance spec and traded in his 131 140 bhp elegance spec. Cost him 10.5k

Another friend traded his a6 131 for a 151 a6 and it cost him 16k. Similar mileage on both cars.. The a6 is the 150bhp...

So I wouldn't worry about skoda resale value!

Purely size wise, would it be more in line with an A6 than an A4?

I am on my third one and though I do not do huge miles I never had an issue. Owner of my past 2010 one has had literally no issues either with it.

I will most likely go for another skoda.

Apparently they are the most reliable of the group.

I love it :) very expensive looking for a skoda actually.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,362 ✭✭✭tw0nk

The standard A6 is a terribly specced, overpriced car. It is however a pretty decent car, comfortable, spacious and the new models look great. I absolutely love the quattro models, but the 2wd models are boring and bland, also can be problematic. They seem to be everywhere these days, probably due to the PCP price of circa 450 per month and the perception of wealth from driving one.

The Superb is an excellent car, which doesn't pretend to be anything (unlike Audi 2wd's basking in glow of quattro models). It is great value comparatively speaking, comes with better spec than the A6 but until now I wasn't keen on its looks, from the passat lookalike MI to the bizarre MII. The new model however looks absolutely great, close to the A6 looks and far enough away from the boring passat to stand out.

It absolutely baffles me why anyone would buy a passat these days. Im guessing the Skoda dealierships are going to be very busy this year with 0% finance on the Octavia and the new superb looking like a cracking car, hopefully it can keep around the same price as current model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,553 ✭✭✭murphyebass

I think the exterior looks wise is ok and the interior is drab.

The VW Audi group of cars at this point all look generic to me.

Not a terrible car just a bit meh imo

Oh and i genuinely pity anyone who buys or has to drive a 1.6 version. Slooooooooooooooooow. Drop a gear, make it two. I'll pass that tractor some day!!

My experience is they're very reliable. Mine going in next week for rear pads and discs, it's on its original discs and 2nd set pads and there's 290k on it 170 bhp. No problems in the past 5 years. Jurys out on the interior of the new model though, will wait to see it in the flesh.

The novelty two way open boot has been ditched in favour of a conventional saloon design. Skoda announced this some time back and the main factor was down to cost, the current set up was too expensive.
