What do you do after work?

I misread the "what do you do for work?" thread title and was disappointed when I opened it. But what do people do with your weekday evenings?

For most of the year I'll go hurling training on Monday and Wednesdays. I think I'll try yoga on Thursdays for a while and on Tuesday I do like to sit on my arse or head to the cinema or something. An evening of doing nothing is great at least once a fortnight!

But what do people do in the evenings? Netflix and boards, gym or pub, catch up with friends or play boardgames or what?

Weather depending, I'd go for a cycle or a swim.
If the weather won't let me, I'd read until my OH comes home, then I'd prepare tea, and lunch for the next day.
After that, I might watch telly if there's something interesting on (Monday evenings are given to University Challenge and Only Connect at the moment), otherwise I'd read some more.

Come summer, I'll also be spending a lot of time in the garden again as well.

Get home work at 6. Go to the gym. Get home for 8pm. Have dinner. Relax for two hours watching tv and then bed. Do this Mon - Thurs. Friday is movie night and then Sat I go to the gym in the morning and spend the rest of the day doing boring housework etc. Might go out in Dublin that night for a few drinks or sit in and watch some more movies. Sunday I iron all my clothes for the week, then go up to the folks for dinner. That evening I get all my food ready for the week (on a bulking diet at the moment) and then watch tv for a couple of hours and head to bed around 10.30.

Take the dogs for a walk/run/play ball every evening no matter the weather or mood, they need their excercise. Depending on energy levels after that watch TV, surf the net, visit family/friends. Usually too wrecked during the week to do anything other than veg though to be honest, I work long hours. Weekends are jam packed so usually take it easy during the week.

I work 'till 9 Mondays and Wednesdays, so don't get home 'till around 10 (I walk home), so just eat and bed on those days. Tuesday and Thursday I study for my uni course. Friday either go out or stay in.

Collect my son from creche. Then play with him for a few hours before putting him to bed.

It will vary. Might read a book, hit the driving range, go to the cinema, meet our friends for a meal, visit the theatre, go for a cycle during the long summer evenings. I'll practice mindfulness for at least 10 minutes, but often up to an hour. Will also have a sauna. Pretty mixed bag.

Think again, and watch tv while eating ****e.

Come home and spend time with my degu, rabbits, guinea pig, and birds. Can have a shít day at work but it's always relaxing to chillout with each of them.

Ah, the simpler life of eating hay and shítting on woodchip.

Then just cook din-dins, watch something like a movie or TV show (Almost finished Six Feet Under) with the GF, and then browse the web or play games / arcade cabinet when she conks out.

All topped off with a lovely cold beer.

Sort out the doggies, have dinner and then its time for bed!
My work hours are too long! Weekends are when the fun things happen!

Have a **** then fall asleep.

Realise that I may not be able to sleep later so have another **** to wake up followed by a night cap ****.

I also try to eat sometimes but **** comes first

So do you subconsciously start tugging yourself off while your asleep to wake up?

Come home, get the dinner on and then practice my Spanish for 40 minutes to an hour or else watch an episode of something on Netflix. After eating it's straight to the boxing gym; 4-5 days a week and I coach on Sunday mornings. Training will be 2 hours (3 if I have a fight coming up) and will focus on mobility, technique and sparring 2-3 days a week. I finish at 9pm and then it's home for another meal and perhaps another hour of telly before bed.

To be honest I feel I need to vary this and get out more during the week as I think I'm not getting the full value of what London has to offer.

Take the neighbours dog for a walk and change her bedding, feed her etc

    Clean out cats house

    Spend time with the kittens

Take my own dog out for some play time

    Do some college work/assignments

    Clean obsessively

    Have a few drinks

Go to bed way too late :(

I've often gone months without watching TV and not even realised

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 557 ✭✭✭IrishAlice

It varies. Try to get to the gym 3 nights a week, have college one night, cook dinner if the OH is working, do laundry, clean around the house a bit, watch some tv.

I try to fit in meeting up with friends every couple of weeks but a lot of the time that has to wait until the weekends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,737 ✭✭✭✭kylith

Mugga tea, walk the dogs, cook and eat, bit of telly, do some typing, bed.

Book club once a month to break the routine.

It varies really, but I try to keep to a schedule moreso than a routine because I work all hours really, and try to make myself as available as possible to other people.

Some evenings I'll get home and I'll just want to chill out and read a book or catch up on some series linked stuff I have on the sky box, then if someone calls to go for dinner or drinks or whatever, I'll just jump in the shower and throw on some fresh clothes and I'm there already.

Some evenings I'll be getting home at 10pm and then I'll have a quick wash, change of clothes and head out again for the night doing my own kind of voluntary work, visiting my mates who are homeless and what not. I might not get home till 6am and at that stage it's time to get ready for my day job.

I try and take Sundays off to go for dinner with family and visit the local art gallery or go to a play if there's one on that evening in the local theatre. Some weekends too I'll go visit the in-laws and extended relations. My wife's gran-aunt is 101 and she's the funniest thing on two legs - sharp as a razor and blunt as a butter knife :D

I'm surprised at how active people seem to be. I expected a lot more people to say most days they cook dinner and watch TV.

People seem to have plenty of evening activities - how do you fit it all in!!

Monday - gym after work, home after 7.30pm, dinner (precooked from night before), pets, chores, get to sit down around 9ish, make tracks for bed 10ish.

Tuesday - cook two lots of dinners to allow for gym on wednesday, pets, chores, get to sit down around 8ish, study, make tracks for bed 10ish.

    Wednesday - same as monday

    Thursday - same as tuesday

Friday - no gym, dinner pre cooked, do the weekly supermarket shop.

Saturday - chores, study, gym, possible socialise with someone for tea, either go out that evening or flop at home.

Sunday, chores, study, family, a lot of cooking/prep for the coming week, relaxed evening.

I constantly feel like Ive no time to do anything any weeknight evening. I had to go to a meeting last night and I had to skip the gym otherwise I wouldnt have gotten there in time OR Id have gotten there but not had any time for dinner. By the time it was over it was only 9ish but I was like a zombie with tiredness. I dont know how people who have kids manage!

I cancelled the UPC telly bit as Ive no time for telly most evenings.

Sad though. I hope they consider changing rules around paternity leave soon, or allow some kind of option where paternity/maternity leave can be shared or something :(

Depends on the evening and how late I finish work (this varies a lot depending on how busy I am). Most evenings of the week its home, cook and watch tv. Visit the GF some evenings also. I work late at a separate job to my day job once a week and often go the pub one evening during the week also. But as I said things vary a lot.

There's an awful lot of gym work in there!

That's how I probably manage to fit stuff in anyway (I'm also studying a blended learning course so sometimes I have to go into college but more of it I can do online and at home), but I don't really do all that much exercise apart from going swimming once a week :o

I could manage without the Sky too but my wife wants to keep it for the E! channel and a few other things. I can't watch that shyte :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,664 ✭✭✭MrWalsh

Its only 3 gym sessions a week but to facilitate that I have to cook meals the nights before gym nights so it does take a lot of time...... Plus Ive a long commute so if I dont make it easy i just wont go.

    My week normally goes...

Monday - hot yoga then dinner at mine with the boyfriend, Netflix in bed
Tuesday - relaxed night with boyfriend as don't see him for the rest of the week, usually try and catch up washing, hoovering etc
Wednesday - hot yoga or I go to a crochet class
Thursday - cardio class and maybe a walk, TV in bed
Friday - I always keep this night free, I love to just go home and get the house tidied for the weekend and then for the rest of the night sit on my bum and do absolutely nothing
Saturday - normall work until 1pm then meet the boyfriend, do something with him for the evening
Sunday - Lazy morning, breakfast in bed, might go out for dinner or go over and see the other half's Mum for a cup of tea in the evening - love lazy days like that

I live alone for half the week and my family are all in the UK so I keep busy where I can or I tend to get a bit bored/lonely!
