Employing a Home Carer

We are looking into hiring a Home Carer for my elderly grandmother, has anybody recently been through this process who could advise? Can one of her children pay the carer and offset it against tax? Also would my grandmother have to set up as an employer or would the person paying the carer's salary (my grandmother lives alone currently)?

Have a look at http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/list/4/olderpeople/homecarepackages/ . It may interest you. You don't have to go with the HSE, but you will have to employ an approved carer, if the carer is outside the immediate family circle. Whoever is paying the carer will have to register as an employer and deduct/pay appropriate deductions. In the heel of the hunt it may be easier to get one of the carer outfits to provide the carer.

The other advantage to an agency (and I do think there are there are not too many advantages) is that if the carer is off on holiday or sick someone else will be provided at short notice.
