    Would say a bargain!
I bought 2 Aldi tvs at different times over last 6 years. Both working perfectly today.
Free 3 year guarantee is a big plus for a new tv.

My personal experience with Aldi is that their so called 3 year guarantee is crap and has put me off buying any similar item from them.

Regarding the TV I would check out some standard brands from DID or POWER CITY or even AMAZON. But that could be bias based on my experience. Aldi, great for food etc but I don't trust them for electronics and especially a brand I never heard of before.

RicherSounds on this site also a good option.

Have used the 3 year guarantee on a dvd player/ recorder previously.
    They replaced it without fuss,
    No quibble from them............

Didn't happen with me. Sent back a camera that had been used a minimum of times and definitely not dropped. Wasn't working and the guy in Germany claimed it had been dropped. The hassle in sending it back and the arguments with Aldi left me saying never again.

I also bought a video recorder and hard drive from Lidl, it was circa €300. It stopped working and Lidl replaced it but the replacement also broke. I eventually got my money back which was a positive but I was ages without the item.

    So my experience is
    Unknown brands
Inconsistent quality (some good some bad)
    Issues over returns
If you do get to return be prepared to be without for a while

All in all stick with the specialist shops in Ireland or if you want a bargain go with Amazon.

Saw a 40" Blauplunkt in Xtravision today for 299 euro.
Seemed a fairly good price for a big tv.

    That's not a big tv. :D

the Blaupunkt regularly goes for 179 sterling on Tesco direct via Parcel motel. you may have to collect in Finglas.

Bought a 40" Tevion from them for €1399, TV had dead pixel, no luck with returning or refund. At least if you buy in a specialist shop, you can buy on condition that TV is taken out of box in shop and checked.

Is there anything better for a cheap gaming TV with 3 hdmi connections

To be fair any TV you will get near this price point in any other shop is going to be a similar no-name/cheap quality brand. This is a good deal and Aldi are good for returns - yes, every retailer in existance has some horror stories, but in general, they're very decent.

Is it a bargain? Not exactly, but it's a very good price considering the expressly offered 3 year warranty. Consumer rights aside, most places try and fob you off once 12 months has passed regardless of how little or much you spent on your TV.

I bought the 26" version of this just before Christmas and the sound is awful, very tinny.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,101 ✭✭✭Rightwing

There is no excuse for buying cheap s*it like that when you can buy a panasonic or sony for about €20 more.

In fact I can't afford to buy Aldi's rubbish.

I have a tv with terrible sound in my bedroom. I plugged in a pair of cheapish speakers for a computer. Sounds great now!

You can't, though. Pretty much all 'branded' TVs in that size and price range are just re-badged products trading on strong brand-names, the units themselves are the same low quality ones like the Aldi one and mostly come from the same place.

I’ve a Lidl one going on almost ten years with no issues (well some now with some new codecs not playing)

The sound is like that on most TV’s now; thinner TV’s leaves less room for speakers. As percy212 said use computer speakers or an old amp like I do or even wait till Aldi/Lidl have a €50 sound bar in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭782378

Father in law got one of these last year, I was about to get one too until I heard the sound from his.

The sound quality on these are really bad and very noticeable. Picture quality and spec are fine but the sound is similar to something you would expect from a cheap radio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,951 ✭✭✭fdevine

I would be happier buying a Tevion in Aldi than a Blaupunkt in Tesco

In my experience the three year guarantee offered by the German discounters is genuine. You will always have some people who will experience issues but I have had everything from power tools to electronics replaced without quibble.

Conversely I have had a Samsung TV fail after 13 months of light use. No comeback despite the fault being a common one. Was quoted €50 to have it even looked at. Fixed it myself in the end for under €2

See above, for around €50 you can solve this and im sure you will save @ least the cost of soundbar/speakers compared to a named brand TV

The speakers that are built-in to most of these TV's are going to be tinny and pretty crappy in fairness. Just get a soundbar or a cheap pair of PC speakers to plug into the headphone jack. Sorted.

Everything comes with a 60 money back guarantee. Just hold on to your receipt.
That is plenty of time to descide if you like it.
The 3 year warranty is good but you need to hold on to your receipt.
I just got a microwave back, they collected it and sent it to Germany. It took a few weeks but they just sent a new one
I just take a picture of all my receipts and save them with evernote. Really handy app.

I have a computer monitor from Aldi still working fine 9 years later, also I got a laptop from them fixed no problem near the end of the 3 year guarantee.

Perhaps you were unawares, but you had scope for quite a bit of comeback via the Sale of Goods Act.

I meant no easy comeback. I know I had some scope for comeback and was aware of precedents based on the Sale of Goods Act but in the time it would have taken to formulate a case I researched the problem, bought the parts and fixed it myself.

I'm in no way proficient in electronics but I'm proud to say that said TV is still going strong three years later.

You can forget all the "you get what you pay for" nonsense. Even the big name manufacturers will scrimp on parts. In my case it was under rated capacitors (Samsung). Lots will have experienced Sony's cheap solder. Badge means nothing

Not strictly true, but in saying that many brand name TVs are now just vestel TV's with whatever brands badge stuck on. This includes blaupunkt, Hitachi, some JVC and Toshiba models, some sharp models and even panasonic is using them now for their a300 model TV.

All of these TV's are the same internally, they are cheaply made and not very nice.walker, alba, technika etc are the same vestel TVs, just different badges.

Sony, Samsung and lg do not use them, they make their own TV's, in Sony's case their TVs are made under licence but are designed by sony and made to their spec and quality. Panasonic's from the a400 model up are all made by Panasonic.

While these brands do have their faults now and again(as you outlined) they are massively better than the cheap sh1te with just a badge stuck on.

Not sure what the aldi/lidl TV's are like but any electronic items I've got their before, (car head unit, vacuum cleaner etc have been cheaply made and not very good.

(My apologies that it wasnt clear in first post...)

But was the Tesco one Full HD?

Getting back to the OP, is this good value based on the Full HD picture quality ? Does anyone know the refresh rate ? My son is interested in it for connecting to a PS4

Yeah Full HD. I picked one up in October for 159. Was on sale at 179 and then used the 20 euro off 100 euro spend.

Haven't had any problems with it yet. As above the sound isn't the best but is okay for what I'm using it for.

I think it's a decent TV for the price because of the full HD and the 3 HDMI slots. I've not seen a comparable model in an Irish walk-in store that cheap before. Lidl had one just before Christmas but it was more expensive.

No idea of the refresh rate, but Aldi TV is 1080p

    Closest equivalent I have found is a Samsung for €290 (32" 100Hz 1080p 1yr guarantee)

Doubt if it's 100Hz but to be honest I think people make too much of it. Most of us wouldn't be able to notice a difference.

    Probably a 50hz panel with 100hz processing.

I was going to buy this aldi tv until I went onto the power city website and they had 32 inch TVs for 200 quid. I bought a WALKER 32 INCH TV for 210 euro full HD 2 HDMI ports USB port saorview ready and u can play pause and record too! bargain !!

Sounds pretty much the same spec except the Aldi one has 3 HDMI ports for the extra €9, which is a clincher for me. Good to know thought. I'm picking up the Aldi one in the morning but it's good to have a back up plan.

They had 12 of these in Aldi Finglas. Queue waiting and all gone now. I got up just as the doors opened at 9am and got the second last ticket. Wasn't expecting a big demand but went up early just in case as I need a new telly.

For anyone who missed out there are some similar speced and priced TVs around

As a previous poster suggested Power City have a range of 32" TVs for between €210 & €290

There's a Walker TV, with dual (Saorview & FreeSat) tuners for €250. 2 year guarantee and apparently an Irish based distributor

I did. Happy enough with it for the price but it's not worth any more than I paid for it tbh. Connected an old set of speakers for better sound. Main annoyance was not being able to pair the Sky remote but I'll be getting rid of Sky soon anyway.

I think it is more or less a given that when you buy a TV these days you are buying a display with the minimum of what will pass as a speaker and are expected to fork out extra for decent sound reproduction.

We had same with 24" Toshiba for kitchen... add an inexpensive soundbar or external speaker (maybe the one you use for iPod).
