Help me get rid of a cold

    Is there anything that works

I'm taking hot lemons, soup, honey, and nurofen. Not all together.

I was in a fit of coughing and couldnt stop myself, but drinking down water at the same time would kind of suggest I was trying to stop myself from coughing. I must have been causing a scene when a random stranger asked was I OK, don't know what I they wanted me to do, stop coughing.

What can the a random stranger do for me in a coughing fit, maybe offer me the bag of crisps she was eating. The best thing anyone can do is fck right off when I have a cold/cough/diseased. This is probably more suited to the ranting and raving forum.

But any tips for this b@stard cold.

Hot whiskey's all the way OP. The vapours will clear those sinus, the lemon and honey soothe your throat and the alcohol, well it won't 'get rid' of your cold per se, but you really won't care about it either.

Depends on the cough. If it gets heavy, and your coughing up green sh!t, then it could be a chest infection. In that case, you need an antibiotic.

There is no cure for a common cold or 'flu once you have caught one.Only prevention I'm afraid. All the above suggestions may ease your symptoms but at the end of the day the virus will runs it's course. Antibiotics are of no use whatsoever unless stated by the above poster you start bringing up green mucus...that indicates a chest infection
    Next please!!

    Rest
    Fluids
    Paracetomal

You can't reduce the length of time the virus is in your body. By sneezing and coughing you are getting rid of the virus.

I spent 3 days this week exhausted, runny nose, cough and sneezing. You just have to preservere with it.

yep. He should use this time to wrap up warm on the couch and wait it out by catching up on Game of Thrones, House of Cards, etc.

Constant cocktail of fluids and over the counter drugs!
No sugar, no dairy and rest.

Drink a pint of water with those dis-solvable Vitamin C things, followed by and Lemsip. If hungry make a smoothie out of fruit.
Then rest, Sleep whenever you can, just stream stuff while you lie in bed. Get up only to piss.

To break up the day take a steaming hot bath if your heart can take it, sweat it our and drink water while you sit there sweating.

Have warm soup for lunch and dinner. No chips or ketchup or creamy mass. If in pain take painkillers and throat lozengers.

At the end of the day you are still miserable, a double hot whiskey and more paracetamol.

I feel your pain OP. I've been off work since Tuesday with a sinus infection that developed from a cold - I don't even mind the coughing and runny nose, it's the fever that I can't stand. Constantly shivering, not being able to determine if you're too hot or too cold, clothes soaked with sweat, our of breath after the slightest of efforts... Weighed myself today and I've lost over a stone since Sunday. Stay strong!

I think people have their houses to warm and it only contributes to getting these bugs. You're going from really warm houses, to cold temps outside. I find most places too warm and I think the fact I'm so miserly with the heating at home is why I don't get colds.

Alcohol is probably the only thing that'll make you feel a bit better.

I had a rotten cold and chest infection over Christmas and couldn't get to the doctor. After suffering all day I caved in and had three glasses of wine in the evening-I felt a LOT better. Told my GP when I saw him and he said he had heard from several people that alcohol made them feel a bit better.

Nothing wrong with fresh air and heat imo. A roaring fire and an open window never killed anybody.

I don't know, a roaring fire with a large air intake sounds pretty dangerous.

You don't catch cold from being too cold or warm.

You can only get one by transference of the virus.

It's a horrible cold! I had it (still have it) and yesterday I just couldn't cope any more because I had so much I needed to do so I went to the chemist and they gave me those Benelin Day and Night and now I'm flying it! I hate taking medication but these are class. I went from baring being able to get up and not having slept in 3 days (I nearly passed out on the walk to the chemist cause of how tight my chest was) to barely noticing that I'm sick except a bit of pressure (not even pain) in my sinus.

I'm not saying it'll have the same effect for everyone. They just worked great for me. I'd ask your chemist what would suit you best.

Loads of people around me have colds and my dad had the flu, so I have been washing my hands much more (and using antibacterial wipes on everything). I haven't let my diseased boyfriend touch me for a week yet I am now resigned to the fact that somehow I caught it. Slept most of the day, aches and pains everywhere and I can't stop coughing. Bollocks!

You get the cold from a virus not from being too cold. The reasons colds are more common in Winter is that people stay in doors more and therefore are in contact with each other more and pass the virus around.

There's been some studies which show that the common cold virus survives better in lower temperatures but they're not conclusive.

I know, that's why I said it contributes. Going from hot to cold a few times a day shocks the system and makes you more susceptible to picking up viruses.

    Rest rest rest.

Had a little one down with a dose, high temp etc etc.

I kicked the hubby out and he gets into the magic bed, with loads of hugs and love.

Don;t know if you are male or female, and sending ya my hugs to you ((((()))))))

I'm afraid that's just another bit of a myth there scummy.

Changing temperature has nothing to do with the body's resistance to contracting naso-pharyngitis viruses. Although there are those who will say different.

But, the only real factor is the proximity of yourself to the person who already has the virus. It doesn't matter how healthy your are. If the virus gets into your system, you're going to get a cold, no matter what.

By the way, our bodies are more than capable of handling the "shock" we think we're receiving in this country. Going from 20+ Degrees to 6 degrees (or even -6) and back again is nothing.

I thought the cold virus did better in warm temperatures? So part of the problem is that people are run down from the cold, lack of light, lack of exercise and so on, and then go into confined overheated spaces which are likely to be more crowded than they would be in summer and hey presto, you've got a cold

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 917 ✭✭✭Mr_Muffin

Why don't scientists just make a cure for the cold? Scientists these days don't seem to be able to cure a thing unlike back in the day.

Eat lots of kiwi fruits everyday. That'll get rid of it in days.

Any truth to the old wives tale that a summer flu is worse than winter one? Different strain maybe.

The cold isn't just one thing. There's hundreds of different viruses that cause a cold. Plus, killing a virus isn't exactly the easiest.

A cold will get rid of itself in days. People tend to think "it must have been the kiwis/garlic/echinacea(sp?) that I had on the fourth day!" when it's just a coincidence.

There is no cure for the common cold.
