Anyone been given this a go?

Expansion pack is free and large maps, ground and space are now available.

Game is also cebrating it's five year anniversary and giving away free ship.

Also got voice casting of Harry Kim, Tuvok, The Doctor, Seven, Neelik, for the new missions.

What was the original like? I had a few mates playing it but they went dark after awhile so never got many opinions on it. The reviews seem to be all one sided one way or the other no real balanced takes.

Its gotten a lot better over the years, revamped a lot of the skills, options and huge customisation.

Is there still an obscene amount of in-game items for sale (i.e. you found an amazing chest, buy the key to open it - only $9.99)? Seemed really focused on the in-game shop.

I recently went back to sto, I had stopped playing about 18 months ago. They have revamped a few bits here and there but the core game play is still the same. I started off a new character and I haven't tried the new Delta stuff yet. I love the ship to ship combat but the ground combat is rather lackluster.

There is quite a bit of that in game but it is easy enough to ignore it, you can buy the keys for in game currency if you want, but I just sell on the chests.

Also very easy to earn Dil which you can convert into Zen to buy keys if you want to go down that road.

Downloaded yesterday for a bit of a side game. Interesting enough.

Started an Engineer. Did the tutorial and first few missions. Was flying along sector space when the borg attacked. Warped in. A few other much better ships there too so I just hung back and pew pewed a bit doing in around 0.0 damage all the way. Final big command ship came in. All going fine, suddenly it released a spread of death and knocked me out in one hit.

How can I tell what level these things are? I cant seem to figure it out for the life of me. Same in sector space. Plenty of red ships marked all over the place but I can't tell what level any of them are..

I think each ship has a number in the upper right corner as its level, could be wrong though. Borg missions are usually for level 50+

Early levels are best for fighting klingons

You can pick three factions now, Federation, Klingons, Romulans.

What are the other factions like now? Do they actually have their own stories, or are they like the Klingons were at launch (i.e. very little story, just lots of fighting). Would be tempted to create a Romulan to see what it's like, and to fly a Warbird...the coolest looking ship ever.

    Sorry Defiant holds that award.

Hmm, i dunno. I love the Defiant, but the Warbird is all big and green and stuff :P

Romulans have a fully fledged story but you do end up allying with either feds or Klinks.

Story picks up after the destruction of Romulus.

Edit: Not 100% but think the Klingons got new storylines and episodes when Kronos was redeveloped..

This game is very strange. Did a few missions last night but I don't really fell that I'm doing it right yet in terms of targetting etc.

It is not a spoiler, the game has had that since the very beginning, its one of the first fed missions about five years old,

also in the plot synopses for Star Trek Reboot films.

Still not really sure what I'm doing yet either.
I had to do a defensive mission last night. Basically survive while waiting for backup. Was supposed to be targeting incoming torpedoes instead of the actual ship firing them. I got owned. Tab didn't work too well for me. Probably just need a bit of practice :P

Installed this last week was surprised by all the races you could pick, was ok but I found controlling the ship to be a bit awkward kinda put me off it. Il give it another bash to see if it will scratch my space mmo itch

See lots of players making a human chain around the shrine on Vulcan. As a way to express their loss for Leonard Nimoy. Hundreds in different instances. Grouped together. Was interesting to see and people were not acting the prick.

Level 22, heavy escort kicks ass!

EDIT: I am still perplexed at some things. Like what should I sell/keep/equip? Should I try and horde dilithium or exchange it for Zen, should I be taking as many missions as possible or what? At this low level is there any reason to worry about binding equipment to the account?

Zen stuff are usually cosmetic, excluding the ships. But most of the lobi stud can be bought on the exchange. I find it best to sell whatever you don't want or need on the exchange. No need to wort about binding equipment, but you will not be able to sell it on exchange.

Only do a few missions at a time, or follow the episodes. ;)

Gearing up is pretty much the same as any other MMO, higher level and rarity items over lower level ones. However, do not buy anything from the exchange or cash shop until max level due to how fast it becomes obsolete and the fact you get more than good enough gear from mission rewards. Some missions you can run over and over to get all items of a particular set.

Leveling up in STO is pretty fast, just follow the quest hubs. The most important thing to remember is you just don't need top tier cash shop ship with best in slot items for the PvE game. You can play 100% of this game without ever spending a penny.

Turn Dil into Zen when Zen prices are low and then back to Dil when there high. Repeat as needed.

    Hearing you on FM!

Lvl 30 now and rising. Missions are fairly straight forward and heavy enforcer rocks.

    EDIT: DEFIANT!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭Venom

So I logged into STO yesterday as this thread got me wanting to get my Trek on.

Oh dear, Cryptic WTF have you done :(

Levels 50 to 60 are an absolute nightmare now as the devs have nerfed xp gains hugely. There are also not enough 50+ missions to get you to level 60 so running the repeatable "patrol" missions are a must but for some insane reason the devs added a 30 minute cooldown timer to them :(

Its kinda messed up that Delta Rising has screwed over all the good work and progress the Legacy or Romulus added.

I got a new PC yesterday and actually looked at this game last night as one to try but figured it was five years old and probably dead now. Seemingly not. I might give it a go over the weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,905 ✭✭✭Noxin

Deffo not dead. People everywhere I go.

I only play every so often. Hit level 8 last night. Space combat is fun. Ground is a bit too easy. I should probably change the level to be harder. I don't even have to pay attention to whats going on at the moment.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,976 ✭✭✭✭humanji

I'm in the process of reinstalling this. I loved it when it first came out and up until I recently bought a new PC, it was always on my hard drive. This and Marvel Heroes are too online games that while not amazing, I find are great fun in small spurts that can often extend to hours. I haven't given the player made levels much of a shot. Do people play them and are there any particularly good ones? Neverwinter implements the player made stuff really well and some of those can be pretty awesome and not just areas where you kill X amount of enemies.

Yeah, the touch pad is very difficult to use on this game, very awkward.

have a couple of mice floating around the office drawer so will pick one of those up.

Got my ass handed to me my 3 borg probe things, just cant move and shoot quick enough with one hand on the touch pad

Got vaporized by a Borg command ship about an hour ago. Was not pleasant. One shot kill.

re-played. focused all fire on one, then high tailed it out of there and then came back for the other 2.

No im in the starbase, no clue what to do!

Having been having MMO cravings for the last while and decided to give this a shot after Nimoys passing put me on a Trek kick. Have to say, I'm enjoying it a lot - space combat feels similar enough to Starfleet Command and Academy, and is great craic, and the ground stuff isn't too terrible. It also lets me use my second monitor without complaint, which is nice

I'm R4phC in game if anyone wants to say hi. Currently lvl 8 and Fedoration.

The unimatrix Command ships can randomly attack any sector at random times. Any Fed ship of most ranks can join the battle.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Playing it at the moment as well, and it's good fun. Probably won't hold my attention for too long, but for now it's solid (bad some crashes).

The price of the ship packs though...holy ****. €135 for some T6 ships? Utterly mental.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 21,693 Mod ✭✭✭✭helimachoptor

yeah im not spending money on anything so ill likely plateau and then pacck it in tbh

Im doing the Crystal entity missions at the moment, every 20hours you get a shard, 15 shards (i think) and you get 50,000 dil, and loada extras.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Is Dilithium used for anything other than converting into Zen? It's crazy having so many currencies.

Got to lvl24 last night, and rocking the Akira now. Probably my favourite Fed Starship, so i'm happy with it till i can get the Defiant. I really enjoy the episodic nature of the campaign, even if they are as bad as Memory Beta for name dropping and insane **** happening.

Still have no idea how to properly use certain features, like R&D and assignments, but i'll figure them out eventually.

Very tempted to start a Romulan of Klingon though. Cloaking seems like a lot of fun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭Venom

Dilithium is used to buy crappy gear from the Dil store (don't), upgrade gear via crafting (major Dil and credit sink) , buy fleet gear and ships, buy doff's and create reputation items.

    This.

Buy fleet gear (pref from a T5 starbase)

Use Dil to exhange for zen when market is good, to buy cosmetic upgrades.

Fleet ships are just as good as c-store ships.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭Venom

Just to add to the above

Fleet versions of c-store ships have improved stats but cost 4 ship tokens (can't remember exact name) instead of 1 if you don't own the original c-store version.

Ship tokens cost around 5 to 7 million EC.

R&D is a long assed grind but you can run a daily for 6k xp for each section.

Romulan ships are awesome due to their warp core abilities. Think 6 extra abilities regardless of class along with insta cloak :) The Romulan story missions are easily the best in the game imho.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

    Cheers lads.

Got to lvl30 last night, and got the Defiant. It's great and looks brilliant, but i kind of wish i'd gone for the Galaxy class. I thought you could just buy it (as i think you could in the past for credits), but it's 80k dilithium...so no thanks. Ah well, levelling is quick enough to not have to worry about it for long.

Gonna start a Romulan later today as well. Can you level through PvP, or would i just be better off sticking to PvE?
