Likelihood of finding a cave based on an areas geology?

    I'm looking at some mythology that locates a cave in a certain area. I was wondering that if you knew the particular geology of an area would that help increase the chances that an area has a cave in it?
    Also for geology heads here is there any online tools that I could use to come up with this information?
    I was hoping that maybe if there was a particular geology in the area that it would increase / decrease the chances and save me a bit of field walking.

    The vast majority of Irish caves as you probably know, occur in limestone or karst landscapes. Not that this helps to narrow your search.
    Have a look here. There are even searchable fields for archaeology and folklore that might be a help.

    Thanks slowburner for the response. If the bedrock is "Fine & some coarser greywacke" I presume that reduces the odds significantly?

    It does. The likelihood of any kind of well-formed cave in greywackes (essentially sandstone and shale) is pretty low.
