Fibre power for data and energy security

Malta is building a combined electricity / fibre optic telecommunications connector to Italy, due to go live in July 2015. The fibre optic strands lie inside the protection of a 230 kV electricity interconnector in a single “pipe”. A strong disincentive to divers working for rogue state data thieves, and others.

While this 200 MW cable will be used to import power from mainland Europe initially to Malta (the population of which is smaller than Cork), I can see it being used to export power to Italy in a few years’ time. Malta has the benefit of sunny skies virtually every day of the spring, summer and autumn, and a good breeze – especially around the coast, during the winter months.

It was a chilly 20C today, with 30+ km/h winds on land today. Most days during the winter it is closer to 50 km/h wind, especially offshore.
A two for the price of one strategy that Ireland could copy, with direct links to France, and continuing on to neighbouring countries – using HVDC + fibre.
