All the blasphemy law needs to do is threaten.

All Selim needs to do is threaten.

No actual attempts at prosecution are required.

Idle threats and I think everyone knows that, particularly when there are other much more frightening possibilities in the mix, now that definitely has a chilling effect.

Not everyone. You cannot know that. That he is even allowed to make the threats is a travesty. That there might be one man, woman or child in this country afraid to express their view or opinion on religion because of those idle threats is a crime in itself; and a far greater crime than blasphemy, it is a crime against humanity.

Of course not everyone , it is just a figure of speech . And indeed the whole blasphemy law is a travesty in a modern democracy and just another example of 'an Irish solution to an Irish problem' and the quicker we bin it the better.

And Dr Selim and guys like than are only hastening that day.

Norway has gotten rid of it's blasphemy law http://www.thelocal.no/20150507/norway-scraps-blasphemy-law-after-hebdo-attacks
The proposal to rush through the change was made in February by Conservative MP Anders B. Werp and Progress Party MP Jan Arild Ellingsen, who argued that the law “underpins a perception that religious expressions and symbols are entitled to a special protection”.

“This is very unfortunate signal to send, and it is time that society clearly stands up for freedom of speech,” the two wrote in their proposal.
