Why do some Irish people hate the English?

I think this is great, we can't defend ourselves and they are kind enough to do so:

Russian Tu-95 'Bear' bomber planes flew past the west coast of Ireland and into the English Channel before turning and going back the same way.

It was reported that the heavily armed aircraft were flying without their transponders – meaning they were invisible to commercial airlines.

Britain scrambled its fighter jets in response - as Ireland is considered to be within its 'area of interest' for defence.

Hating the Brits seems to be something which only the working class do so maybe it's just a chip on their shoulder.

While I find the idea of hating the Brits in this day and age to be fairly ridiculous, the idea of being grateful to them for defending us against the Russians is no less so.

Dunno OP, maybe it's something to do with the whole invading and occupying Ireland thing.

Maybe you could ask an ill-mannered working class oik some time and question him on the matter, that is if you can understand the animalistic, feral grunting that they use to communicate.

The working class always preferred the MOBO's over the Brits.
R n B, rap etc are more their bag.

I'd say that the whole Northern Ireland sitt-ee-a-shun probably has something to do with it.

The events you note happened over 1200 & 1600 years ago respectively. Time is a great healer.

How do the actions of a Russian aircraft lead on to a discussion about Brit bashing? Genuinely curious.

People are always coming up with new ways to get a dig in at their favourite target (in this case the working class). I understand the IDA are trying to harness this native ingenuity and use it in the software industry.

I always laugh at this point. Ya'd swear if Ireland won the World Cup it wouldn't be mentioned two years later.

They got a lot closer to us today then flew over Donegal with those pesky brits escorting with three typhoons.

The one I seen was a large jet being escorted on either side by much smaller planes and one behind.

I think this is great, we can't defend ourselves

Great let's spend billions on a squadron of new fighter jets. We'll have to train up lads to pilot them/maintain them, keep buying parts and arms for the next twenty years for them. I'm sure our NATO friends will be only two glad to introduce us to their arms manufacturer friends. Then when the Russians do decide to attack, they'll just lob a few missiles our direction and keep the bombers free from hassle.

We can't defend ourselves against Russian nuclear bombers. Nor can we defend ourselves against a nuclear missile. It's absolute insanity to think that we should waste that money. There are far better things for us to be investing in now. Not indulging in fantasy land.

England actually won it. The RoI managed to win a game or two and they still go on and on about it. The RoI's greatest manager played that day, fyi! As for Irish people hating the English, I find it amusing. Hearing some 'salt of the earth' Dub go on about 'da Brits' always makes me chuckle.

I spend a lot of time in England and I think it is a fabulous country and the people are tops!

    Don't think that it's hatred.

It seems to be resentment that's easy to create in people and forms half of AH threads.
Whether it's a Joe Duffy / Irish Independent complaint about the public sector, government, EU, ryanair ; travellers feeling disrespected by non-travellers and vice versa; or a biased retelling in a dodgy school history book.

Most of us don't hate politicians, but think that they have no respect for us when they speak to us as though we're simpletons in their efforts to 'build confidence'. So resentment is returned.

Equally there's a taught false perception that the english as a whole think of us with contempt; when you see that infamous Punch cartoon that keeps being dragged up almost 150 years later, someone's trying to manipulate you.
The indo tries to drum up the same every time some german politician says something foolish regarding Ireland.

In reality it's a rare enough oddball that tries to elevate themselves by disrespecting others, and there are plenty of the same that are Irish, including family members.

Which may be a good point except for the fact that Russia has about as much interest in attacking Ireland as Ireland has in invading Burkina Faso.

It's all part of the recent probing of European military preparedness by Russian naval and air forces in response to NATO's self justifying expansion and sabre rattling.
