I've moved across the city in recent times and this evening I was catching up with a friend of mine. We were talking about Dublin in general and started matching (or maybe one-upping) things from either side. Was wondering if you all could add your own suggestions. Basically things which are similar but from opposite sides of the city.

Northside - Croke Park / Southside - The Aviva
Northside - Dublin Port / Southside - Dun Laoghaire Port
Northside - Royal Canal / Southside -Grand Canal
Northside - Nth Circular Road / Southside - Sth Circular Rd
Northside - Rotunda Hospital / Southside - The Coombe

I know there's a Dublin forum but I'd also like to hear from people from outside and see if they've picked up on any things like this.

You ever pour gravy over your dinner and it lands in a big heap between the spuds and the broccoli?

    That's the Liffey

It's more of an east and west divide these days.

Southsiders want to speak to you, Northsiders "want to talk to you".

Northsiders don't tell you to pop yourself down on the armchair, it's "sit down and drink dah tea"

Southsiders have arguments, Northsiders call them fights.

Cue the Malahide/Ballyfermot reminders. I know. It isn't as clean-cut as Northside/Southside. But you have to admit the use of less confrontational language is a bit of a class disparity. Nothing wrong with it, it's just an interesting one.

And I was just about to mention Tallaght Hospital and Blanch Hosp... never mind :(

I'm not talking about socio-economic divides really, I know the whole East/West thing rings truer than the other one. Just wondering were there any other examples similar to the OP.

    Where's east Dublin?

Howth, Malahide, Raheny, IFSC, Sandymount, Merrion, Ballsbridge, Blackrock, Monkstown, Killiney.

It's neither a perfectly East/West nor a perfectly North/South division. But North/South is the best classification, since the affluent areas of South Dublin go quite far West into Terenure and Harold's Cross, whereas you wouldn't have that equivalent westward range on the Northside.

Northside affluent areas are almost exclusively localised on the coastline, so it's not truly an East/West divide.

Generally referring to the coastal areas of Dublin I'd imagine. Howth, Portmarnock, Malahide, Clontarf, Booterstown, Dalkey, Killiney.

But but.... isn't Dublin split by the Liffey, so truly there is no east or West Dublin but simply North and South?

I jest a bit of course. I'm from 'west' Dublin myself.;)

Split the city down the middle from top to bottom. The more affluent areas are east. On the west you have Cabra, Finglas, Ballymun, Santry, Whitehall, Tallaght, Blanch, Inchicore, Clondalkin, Crumlin, Drimnagh, Dolphins Barn, Rialto and a few other sh*tholes.

Your current location being one of them. ;)

Quite possibly alright! Meaning of course that the centre of Dublin is..... the M50 bridge! And seeing as I grew up next to the Liffey Valley shopping centre, I'm actually from central Dublin. The plot thickens.:pac:

    Northside- O Connell street

    Southside- Grafton street

I always found the difference between the two astounding when you consider they're only a five minute walking distance from each other.

With a couple of exceptions like ranelagh, foxrock and castleknock, the more affluent areas of Dublin tend to be costal.

Firstly, that makes zero sense. Second of all, I also wanted opinions of people who aren't from Dublin. How's that in any way bad? Would be worse if I said "Culchies needn't bother replying".

I don't get this "Northsiders" thing in relation to skangers. Surely skangers are skangers irrespective of what part of Dublin they're from.
