Got called today for wisdom teeth extraction...

So around a year and a half after my dentist sent off the form for my wisdom teeth to be extracted I got a call today to say I have an appointment for next Monday, got a shock as i wasn't expecting it.

I suppose im just asking what to expect when I go down..will they be removed that day? Ive never had a problem with my wisdom teeth yet but my dentist gave me horror stories about them and said they definitely needed to come out and was shocked to hear I had no pain or never had an infection..so much so he gave me a load of powerful pain killers and antibiotics, to date I still have not had an infection.

Im also wondering should I definitely go ahead and get them out even though as of yet they are causing no issues?

Return their call to clarify whether you are booked for a consultation, or for consultation& treatment?
The oral surgeon specialist will assess your wisdom teeth as they appear in your mouth, as well as how they appear on xray, & discuss your options re leaving them be or extracting them, pros cons, risks benefits ect.
The public health system is busy enough, and wisdom tooth extraction tricky enough, to ensure that your surgeon won't be too gung-ho about recommending with any unnecessary treatment.

is it common for them to see you and then after book an appointment for another date to do the job?

Yes, consultations and later procedures are common.
You have been sent elsewhere as the tooth is difficult or you need IV sedation/GA. No-one is going to book someone directly for that without prior consultation unless they have further information and know what is going on in advance...

That is usually how I practice, however if someone calls in pain and needs treatment asap, we book them and allow the extra time to do the consultation and treatment that day..... We can't allow this time for everyone though as patients may not turn up or may decide to put the treatment off so we end up sitting drinking tea for the day....

just one more question, if im booked in for actual treatment on a later date how long is the wait? I mean will i be waiting another year and a half to get the job done after my appointment monday?

It depends on where you are going and if you are private or public. If you waited a year for the consult then I would guess that you will wait for the treatment....
