A TD or Senator has run up significant bills by making dozens of expensive calls to a single African number yet confidentiality rules prohibit the Oireachtas from finding out who is responsible.

The calls to the phone – dozens of them each year – are consistently among the most costly made from Leinster House.
However, laws that grant politicians complete privacy in their offices mean nothing can be done to identify who is responsible.

Records released by the Oireachtas show that the Kenyan mobile was the destination number for 38 out of the 100 most expensive calls during late 2011 and 2012.

The review of the Information Commissioner stated that the phone number did not belong to an Irish person working abroad or one that was working in an official government capacity.

A decision said that the Oireachtas was satisfied that the Kenyan number is a ‘local mobile number of a personal phone of a private person’.
The investigator found that the mobile number was therefore the ‘personal information of the individual recipient of the telephone calls’.
    http://www.rte.ie/news/investigations-unit/2015/0116/673155-politician-runs-up-2-000-bill-phoning-a-single-african-mobile-ph/

That's some abuse of public funds.

So, folks of afterhours, would ye say it is a member of FG, FF, SF, LB, Ind?
Or do ye not give a fornicate fuck.

Probably just a TD who has a grudge against Kenya and is an advisor to the al shabab terrorist group.

Doesn't Barack Obama's brother live in Kenya? Could be someone trying to influence US policy by developing a relationship with him. Not sure how effective that would be though.

We had that in work once except all the calls were to Cote d'Ivoire; it turned out to be one of the cleaners who had also taken a cheque from a colleague's chequebook and cashed it for £3,000.

Côte d'Ivoire is the official name in both English & French for that country.

    République de Côte d'Ivoire

That's the full name in French. In English it's just Republic of Côte d'Ivoire. Both have Côte d'Ivoire in the title though.

Well lad-di-dah, do you live in the Republic of Ireland? Have you ever been to the Kingdom of Denmark? What do you think of the current situation in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan? Do you think the Hellenic Republic (Greece) will recover anytime soon?

Official names for countries are only for official documents. Most of them are very long-winded

I never said the full title had to be used. If your problem is with "longwindedness" then surely Côte d'Ivoire is better since it has fewer syllables than Ivory Coast.

They need to reboot her out of the Senate. Actually the Senate should not even exist - when are we reforming that again???

Sorry I cant post links as I am a new user.

Fidelma Healy Eames went on a trip to Kenya in 2012 with a state funded agency. This is an actual quote from her. If ever there is proof that some politicians do feck all.

    Fidelma Healy Eames

It's very hard work. You have two-and-a-half to three weeks' work in one week. We start at 8 in the morning and don't finish until 5 or 6. That's a lot more work than a day at home.

    LOL

Id wonder has she ever seen that statement in text since it came out of her mouth. Has she recalled in horror ?

would it have anything to do with Tullow Oil's exploration contracts in Kenya?

It was suggested before on Politics.ie that a number of Dail members had bought shares in Tullow oil ahead of the €166 million aid package awarded to Uganda by Ireland in 2010. A few days later, Tullow oil was given an oil exploration contract in Uganda.

Google 'Tullow Oil Kenya' and re-read my post..

Tullow Oil have interests in more than one African country.

Your post doesn't look very smart tbh.

Why isn't Edna Kenny banging on about the abuse of taxpayers' money?

There was an official trade visit to Kenya in 2013. Might be something to do with that.

It's possible the phone call relates to an individual in the Kenyan government or in business, with whom the relevant public representative or his staff member was maintaining a political relationship.

I'm amazed that phonecalls are still this expensive. Is the cost of such communications really justifiable by the telephone companies?

Interesting - Michelle Mulherin the Fine Gael TD has a former Kenyan boyfriend. And according to this article:
    http://www.sexualhealthcentre.com/2012/04/mulherin-women-are-using-abortion-as-birth-control/

he has returned to Kenya, but the two are understood to still be friends. It's nice to have friends, isn't it?
