The Custodian of the Two Mosques has died.
Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has died and his brother Salman has become the kingdom's new ruler.

The death was announced in a statement broadcast on Saudi state TV, which reported the monarch passed away at 1am local time on Friday.

The 79-year-old successor King Salman has named his half-brother Muqrin as his crown prince and heir.

"His Highness Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and all members of the family and the nation mourn the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who passed away at exactly 1am this morning," the statement said.

Abdullah, 90, took power in 2005 after the death of his half-brother King Fahd.

As a nation who gets into bed with the Western world, we, as Irish people, cannot maintain neutrality and hope our leaders do anything other than express condolences at the death of this king.

B*llocks. That email about the dead king wasn't just a hoax.

I've read that his brother Salman, who replaces him as king, suffers from Alzheimer's and sometimes cannot even remember his own name.

With the King death and with only two of Al Saud sons remaining there is much unrest and potential for disunity now in the kingdom, and a clash between various factions (theological, political, social, and others) looms ominously ahead.

You're sad that this wanker is dead?
A shitbag who did nothing of note for his entire life....except sit in the lap of luxury and flog oil because he sat on it.

    Gas (pardon the pun)!
Obama sending his "condolences" to a great ruler.:pac:

Didn't this dick send tanks into Bahrain not long ago to destroy pro-democracy demonstrations under the watchful eye of Obama.
Didn't this flabby rich scumbag state that there were thousands of tanks right on the border with Iraq in 1990 so as to kick off Gulf War 1

    RIP for this rodent? ha.

Eh, I think Saddam Hussein invading Kuwait and then threatening Saudi Arabia had more to do it than some internal tank movements.

Sad to see him go, he was a good man. Its just a pity that he had such a short time as King as he made tremendous changes to Saudi Arabia and to the people.

    PBUH.

One of the most repressive regimes in the world, and Obama & Co fawning over him. Pretty sick really, but not surprising.

I sincerely looking forward to seeing Saudi Arabia get consumed by the deserts and absorbed into the volatility of the rest of the Middle East once their oil's gone, and the West couldn't give two ****s about them after.

Have you lived under Saudi rule then conorhal ? If you would call "disappearing" or mutilating anyone who disagrees with your regime or policies a better form of leadership than our own albeit imperfect democratically elected one, then good for you! Our little state is in the halfpenny place in the corruption stakes when compared with the Saudi " oil is power" regime. Anyone for Saudi style democracy here then ?
