Garmin nuvi will not search by post code

Hi,
Bought a nuvi 52 and am having an odd problem with searching by postcode. If the postcode begins with the number 1 the nuvi returns the following message: "loc8 codes must contain at least three characters".
Again, this is not a problem when searching using a postcode starting with another number, only 1.
I've emailed garmin customer support and received advice to change the country to Ireland, which I did (even tho it was already set for here!) But the problem remains. Emailed garmin again and got a rote reply with the same advice.
Any help appreciated, it's driving me mad and I can't quite face ringing garmin yet!
