Decided to count up my coin jars tonight. Over the years i've kept putting it off by adding more jars.

Anybody want to guess how much there is, in an attempt to make it less boring. It is mainly coppers.

Have to have it done by 11pm or the wife will kill me for making a mess of the kitchen.

There's machines for these things you know.

You could make another type of mess in the kitchen too.

Why are you putting euro coins in your copper jars!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,588 ✭✭✭ahnowbrowncow

Could you keep us updated with photos of the stacks that you build? You are counting and stacking them?

    This is all very exciting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Senna

I think you need to re-evaluate your life when this is how you spend a Friday night and when you put a time limit so your wife won't give out.
Not forgetting that you felt the need to start a forum post about your escapade.

Okay, okay, I got this. Eh... Wait, is that coin there - 11th row down, about 7 coins from the left - a 20c or a €2? There's a bit of a shine, I can't make it out properly. My answer heavily depends on it.

3 shillings and a half crown

    €483.89

I build up all my change in a 4.5L Martell Cognac bottle so I'm an experienced hand. Usually adds up to between 400-500 euro.

hard to say - could you tell us how high centre of pile is in cm.

I'm going to do voulmetric analysis.

    Then apply this

Have you got bags OP? If you don't and are just going to dump it into the counting machines that charge 9.5%, don't bother counting. Too much for Tesco self-service tills, esp now they have a tiny slot (ooh matron....)

Start by separating into separate values! Then make collections of 100 x 5c etc, as appropriate for the bags

€148.20 because one 20 cent coin always ends up left over!

also i feel you are shafting us, i saw some sterling in there and the sterling makes the Euro look more plentiful if its hiding underneath the euro

Would someone be that lazy to be exposed to 9.5 %

You could basically earn more per hour than most jobs , by just counting.

They take a percentage, however your local barman doesnt and will be delighted for the change, banks charge for it so saving them money too. as long its not all coppers (insert lame joke about nightclub here). And you can have an excuse for a pint while you're at it

This is a bit like those 'guess the coins in a jar' competitions you used to see at shows and such.

    Except there's no jar.

    Or prize.

The 50p is actually to the far right. I hope you're taking exchange rates into account. I bet theres several drachma and peseta there too from the OP's lads holidays abroad back when he was a young, care free, single go getter which have to be sent back to their respective countries of origin in the hope that their central banks will exchange them. Otherwise you're just wasting your time.

    2,657 Euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

well if we assume it is a circle - it is about 1100 coin^2

    there is about 12 euro in a 24 coin^2 - area

If it was a flatish disc it would be 550.

But sadly or hapily , it much deeper in middle.

So making a large assumption (so i could hace guessed at start) that it is 3 coins height - meaning the extra volume is 1250 (coin^3) (lol)

so volume gives extra - 620 euro (flawed a bit there)

So I should have bleeding guessed.

1170 Euro - and some british coins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,185 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

    2,657 Euro.

I've a feeling this is closer as middle looks very packed, OP - did you keep pouring into middle. (guess so)

    €185.40

Edit: I was forced to change my guess. My new one is €678.62

    No, 285.27

    Actually no 1027

    Or 586
