    Hi all

Just putting the finishing touches to my whelping area for expecting pups.
Need to hook up a heat lamp & a camera yet (easy how my house ones are done and I have one there spare)

Any ideas, photos, lessons learned that you might share?

    Cheers

Is it your pointer or springer you bred?? I know fitzy_fitzy on here bred a litter and he did a serious job of looking after them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭allan450

if its her first litter bring her into the house.i do anyway you can keep an eye on them all the time.first litters the bitch can be awkward.once you get the 1st 4 days out of the way you can put them out.so if she had them on a Thursday take friday and the mon/tue off work.but you would hardly get that lucky

Pointer. The bitch jumped the pens in my parents when I was out. They have a camera on it so I could see what happened.

She will be whelped in my shed. No dogs in the house for fear of word war 3.

Put a bit of vet bed down when she is about to whelp. Helps keep the pups warm while she is licking them clean and dry. As long as its enclosed, dry, dark and quiet the bitch will be happy. I'm sure she will be fine EP if it's anything like their kennels you made.

Cheers Mallards. I've the place set up now and the box built. I need to get some vet beds alright. I used stockboard for the box. Found it great stuff to work with.

    All tips or experiences welcome

So have you any idea of what type of dog covered her??

The one on the camera which was in the pen - my pointer

And did you cover her intentionally with another pointer or did another dog get into her? sorry for confusion

Very important to have a rail inside the box in case the bitch might smother or crush a pup if it gets behind her.....see pic...

    I'll explain;
    > 3 pens side by side.
    > Bitch is in pen 1.
    > My pointer dog is in pen 2 whispering sweet nothings
    > Bitch enters pen 2 via mission impossile style acrobatics
    > Pointer dog enters bitch
    > End game a swollen belly

All was caught on the house cctv. Boys version of the story was much more elaborate!

    Should I draw a schematic?? :D

    Thanks Hatcock.
This is where I am with it so far. Gonna add an additional lat to the rail to bring out further on the advice of a good dog man.

Forgive the mess as I hadn't tidied up yet when taking these. I'll take some better ones during the week.

No no I understand haha. Best of luck with them anyway. Will you register them with the kennel club?

    Cheers.
The plan is to register as I want one if not 2 for myself.
Both are very well bred so would be a shame not to.

Nice pointer…where did you get the stock board from and is it water repellent? Thanks.

It is. Would be ideal for a dog box.
I've also used it on my dog houses. I wouldn't advise for younger chewy dogs like any plastic but the older lads don't go near it.

Few updates. Nearly ready to move in now.
Need to sort it the light height and position but that's just tweaking.

So as of the 26th of January there is 6 pups.
Mix of 3 and 3 I think including 2 very white ones that have some lemon developing.
All seems to be going well and the bitch is flying it minding em which is relief.
Fingers crossed she minds em and all stay healthy.

Whelping area is working out a treat so thanks to those for ideas and advice on it.

Few updates. All doing well. Eyes open and getting more mobile and trying to walk etc. Another week will make a big difference. Im very happy with how the boxes is working out. Gave it a wash today and was all very simple and hygienic.

I will be looking at advertising them soon on the trade thread so if interested shoot me a PM.
Few deposits down already but there's a dog and 2 bitches available.
These will be top dogs in the right hands!

Not a fun game this selling pups.
    Some Cowboys out there.
That's before going anywhere near known sale sites.

It's only someone who has raised pups before themselves knows the value you get, when you buy quality pups like your own EP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭allan450

you wouldnt believe it.In the past 6 months iv got deeper into the spaniel world and you wouldnt believe the **** if i told you.Lads reading everything on these forums and talking down to you like you dont know ****.Then when you see their dog different story.il tell you again.

There's no money in it to do it right.
Spent the price of a pup in the vets the other day. Between regular worming, quality food and all the set up theres nothing in it. Not to mention my time socializing and exposing them to everything I can to make them confident and bold before moving on.

I've add in local gun shop. More lads ringing about who am I more than the story with the pups. Comical really!
