Ireland's Symbols

What symbol do you reckon best represents Ireland:
    - the harp
    - the shamrock
    - the claddagh ring
    - the celtic cross

I'm on the look out for a gift for someone and/or a couple abroad and I'm thinking about going down the route of something Irish and from Ireland and hoping to get something with one of this symbols.

Which one would you think would be the best?

    The Irish flag.

Wouldn't recommend the Celtic cross. I think it tends to be associated with the far right in the USA and other countries (depends where this friend is from though).

I took the trouble of reading your post and I do believe the traffic cone would be a perfect gift. Easy to wrap for posting , free , they are fcuking everywhere and they last forever.

If they're a couple, I'd go with the Claddagh.

The harp is to closely associated with Guinness; shamrock is just a weed; and the cross might not mean much if they're not religious.

What about the round tower, or that sculpture The Death of Cuchulainn - we always had a stock of those to give as corporate gifts - nice pieces with a good back story!!!

Road sign for the home town, not a symbol but might make a cool gift.

    The claddagh ring
The harp's the least of the evils there. Shamrocks remind me of Bostonians on "Patty's" Day, every 40+ balding armchair republican knacker you'll find in a sink-estate pub seems to have the Celtic cross tattooed crookedly somewhere on their person, and to me Claddagh rings are a symbol of Argos more so than Ireland.

Clearly I didn't - I thought you ewe proposing Cork as a symbol of Ireland, and thus as an appropriate gift for the OP to give.......

Maybe a picture of a golden harp with a few broken strings ,and a motto underneath saying "it will do".

The Celtic Cross is beautiful looking, I was at a funeral burial recently and was admiring the magnificent cross headstones in this particular cemetery. It's something I'd like myself for my own plot.

Tap water with a little tag on it saying €84 million please, it's the perfect representation of everything messed up in our little country.

Oh and a mug with the slogan... Ah shur it'll be grand written alongside it.

I'm not a mad GAA head, but having the 3rd biggest stadium in Europe for the playing of amateur games is pretty cool. And all the money that pours back into small communities as a result. There was the analogy that Ireland was ran by Fianna Fail, the Catholic Church and the GAA. Two of them have had their time. The GAA is a very positive influence on our social fabric.
