    Hi,

Myself and Loki98 (he of 5 pictures in POTW 2014 thread fame :p ) are going to meetup Saturday 24th Jan (weather dependant) at 7am at the Sutton train station car park.

We will then head to one or two of the beaches on the southside of Howth and try and get a few sunrise pictures.

Of course Loki98 has already got plenty of amazing shots from Howth in the past, so really he is just being good enough to show me the ropes there, the good spots, access routes etc, which I am VERY grateful for.

Reply below if you are interested in joining and we can send on numbers etc.

    Cheers :)

    Hi there,

I've only met 1 person from here before so I'll be in the same boat as you, and, although your photography at those links is mostly portrait, by the looks of it you're far far more advanced than me so come along for sure (if it goes ahead - weather pretty shocking these days!)

    Hi all,

Unfortunately Loki98 has informed me something has come up and he can't make it this Saturday. Seeing as he is the ring leader/reason for me arranging this in the first place, I am gonna have to postpone until the following Saturday, the 24th January.

Well, that is, me and Loki98 will postpone it anyway, up to yourselves if ye wanna postpone too or go ahead :)

I hope the weather gets a bit milder and a bit calmer by the 24th too.

Awww, thats a pity. Oh well, I can wait till later too.

    Hi all,

Only a few days to go, the weather is looking good (though it is still a little bit far out to be certain).

It's gonna be freezing with temperatures about 2 degrees (realfeel ~ -5!) and windy enough at ~24km/h, but the main thing is there will only be ~26% cloud cover (only 1% chance of rain)! This is according to Accuweather. Let's hope any few clouds there are are not exactly where we don't want them!

I think we have 5 definites so far:

    Myself
    Loki98
    CorkGirl
    OldGoat
    Samhail

    Maybe's:
    Adox
    Hutman
    DirtyGhettoKid
    BlackRoseStudio

Please do let me know if I have all of this right/wrong! :)

I am meeting Loki98 at Sutton train station at 7am, but then he will be driving from there further down closer to where the beaches etc are..so I'm not sure if there is any point in us all meeting at Sutton train station if we are all just going to have to get back into cars and drive on further anyway? Any thoughts?
There's a car park at the Summit but then I think that might be too far past where we want to meet... I'll ask Loki, see what he thinks, but if others are familiar with the area please let us know if you know of something more suitable.

Thanks, I'll send on contact info in a few days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 677 ✭✭✭Loki98

    Hi,
I'd suggest we meet at the train station in Sutton. It means we only have to arrange one meeting and gives a bit of leeway for any one arriving a bit late.
If anyone wants to leave their car there, I can take 2 more with me.
Again we meet up, sort ourselves out and get to where we want to be it will be pushing 8:00 and we want to be set up and in place before 8:20.
As Mystic says the weather is not looking too bad so dress warm and expect rain. (I hope not)
If anyone wants to PM me I'll send you me phone number just in case.

how do you get from Ashbourne to Howth, do you go through Drumcondra, or is Collins Avenue the way one goes?

Are you looking for directions or trying to arrange a lift? I could swing back out to Drumcondra or Collins handly enough at that hour of the morning if that's any use.

That's very nice of you, but where are you coming from?
I was asking about a lift alright, but only if someone was passing.. I'm very close to Drumcondra station there but the train from Connolly to Sutton station (arriving at 7am) does not have a connecting train coming from Drumcondra beforehand at this hour of the morning so I was gonna get a taxi to Connolly

Phil, I'm picking up Mystic in Drumcondra if you can get there for 6:30.

If the fog that was out this morning is any indication probably not worthwhile getting out of bed, unless we can get up high enough...?
90% cloud cover tomorrow morning, and dropping to 50% cloud cover on Sat morning.

    What ye think?

You want some cloud anyway - a blank empty sky is often the hardest to work with.

What we want is an actual sunrise - the last couple of days I've seen people posting that nothing has happened.. which means we are due a really good one :D

Nope! My last sunrise attempt was in Donegal on Malin Head and it was in mid September so pretty early, standing around and nothing happened. Meant we had to be creative and look for alternative shots which is good too, but not why you are there at that hour of the morning!

Pick a weekend and a location where there is a reasonable B&B in the vicinity :) We have done a few trips in the past but none recently.. no harm in seeing who's up for a trip ;)

I'm a maybe. Very tired today. I've met people from boards before and am not afraid on that aspect. :pac:

Aside from warm clothes, what should I bring on the equipment side? Dinosaur SLR, kit lens, 70-300 and new 50mm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,182 ✭✭✭Tiriel

Bring it all ;-) Most importantly tripod, camera, battery charged (cold weather can cause battery to die faster so charge and bring a spare if you have one), empty memory card, filters if you have them, the widest lens probably- so the 50mm in your case (but depends on personal preference), lots of layers to keep you warm and fingerless gloves of you have them!
