Fitting Washing Machine to a Van

    Hi- was asked is it feasible to install a 6kg washing machine (and ideally dryer) to into a van - I guess we would need to have a generator to run it or could we power it off the engine using a power inverter? I dont have spec's on washing machine but guess they are 1200 watts, and a dryer probably 2000/3000 watts maybe.

    Anybody do this? Hook up to power source won't be possible

    Appreciate your thoughts on where to start?

    This scale no problem, you could even run it from PV in the Summer.

    If you're thinking of a full scale domestic then plumbing and generator or hook-up are essential. Seen it done on a 7.5 toner.
    Domestic drier....not entirely practical. Not a chance on batteries. 3000watts is pushing the limits of a hook-up supply. Probably need a ~4kVA gene for that, ~5kVA if you want to use it with the washing machine.

    90A alternator * 12v = 1080 Watts in a perfect world where alternators were wired correctly and 100% efficient. Realistically I'd expect the engine to be using ~3kW idling and alternator producing ~400watts and if it's stock wiring they may well get molten trying to keep up and the alternator may well pack it in from over-temp.
    You'd be talking mega bucks for an inverter and battery set that can sustain the drum motor.

    Thanks for the advice, it sounds like it could be too much effort as the power requirements are very high. It won't be used that often - its not for a camper but a sports club team van, and it would be handy to have means of washing gear when away at events over a few days as its often hard to get hotels/ B&B's to do this at weekends, bank holidays etc

    The mobile option might be the best bet though
