The department will have to review the ban on burial in some areas if that's the sort of profiteering that's going on, the charge of €35/ewe should be enough to compensate for isolated collections, it's only costing about €6/ewe to get them rendered

We had a lad out from Birdwatch Ireland at one of our on farm STAP meetings. During conversation about a particularly hard Winter I suggested sheep that die on hills or commonages should be allowed be left there, remove tag, note in register.

Ravens, foxes, greycrows (though I would begrudge the latter) clean up a carcass in jig time. BW lad agreed, I can see how it would be viewed as controversial but I don't see the harm in it once the place isn't littered with bodies.

I would differentiate though between a fallen animal in a remote spot and one in my field!

I live in kk and they charge me twenty euro for a ewe delivered which is not too bad going on some of the prices people are been charged

40 quid collected here, they tried to up it last year to 50 but they didn't get away with it

40euro that's a fierce price to pay for a sheep I am lucky as the knackery is only around six miles from me and sometimes if its a small ewe put it in boot of car instead of trailor

I know. But he's in Wexford we're in dublin so it's a fair spin. When he tried to up it we were able to find someone else to do it at 40. The price is the only complaint we have we have(touch wood) so when he brought it back down we stuck with him.

I wonder where the Dealers (IFJ ) story came from this week or is your friend making a habit of the €100 charge

I don't know the source of that, I didn't ring him anyway. I had my collection fee on here, Twitter, and in a conversation on TFF. I might shoot off a text to farmers tonight asking if anyone else has receipts.

Be interesting to see if anything comes of it. Sent out that text earlier, do ya want more receipts IF I happen across any?

Be nice to make it into a paper for receiving an extortionate amount of money, will have to put it on the "to do" list.

Not a sheep farmer but tbh some of the charges for fallen stock are ridiculous.
Lost a TB mare a couple of years ago and got quoted €120 to collect her from my place in NC Dublin. The only licensed hunt club and knackery that services this area both quoted the same price.
I phoned our local collection man in Longford and told him how much it was going to cost me if I got her collected here. He told me to bring her down and he would collect from the yard for €70.

Interesting, the Journal has done a piece on knackery charges quoting €40 as the highest price paid for dead ewe removal in Connacht. Yet The Dealer recently quoted my €100 bill.

    One wonders.....

Correction, it gets better, €35 highest rate reported for Connacht, the €40 was for South Leinster.

Got our BVD bullock taken away today . 23 mths old €120 , I presume that's about the going rate . Not much dearer than your ewe anyhow Con . I had to give them €30 that was outstanding on the last bill aswell

Got a nice phone call yesterday from an IFJ journalist acknowledging it's omission and apologizing for same.

That's no harm, I was a bit disappointed, he seems to follow us here.
