Greedy petrol stations ripping people off.

With the massive drop in global oil prices I have noticed how painfully slow an awful lot of petrol stations have been to drop their prices. There are a few around my area that are 15-20c dearer than the local applegreen (not that I would go to applegreen, I wouldn't burn bushes with their stuff).

Has anyone else noticed the trend?

Yep. It's called the rocket feather effect. When the price of oil goes up, petrol/diesel shoot up immediately. However once it drops, the petrol & diesel are slow to drop too, ie they drift down lazily like a feather.

How much of an MPG deficit do you see with Applegreen?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭pa990

Just pay the 15 to 20cent premium for the superior petrol.

If I fill up at Texaco I get around 600 to the full tank. When I filled up at applegreen and got about 530. A considerable difference.

Have you just arrived in Ireland?

In general the Irish are exceptionally greedy. They are also exceptionally generous at times. Perhaps in keeping with the 'land of contradictions' sh1te peddled to tourists.

    I'm tired.

Have to disagree with you, but just coz I work in a petrol station (Topaz)!! :D
I work in one in the South East. Since the prices have started dropping in America, we have been lowering our prices..sometimes every day. At the mo, its 125.9c petrol, 119.9 diesel (and expected to drop further)

There are some stations who are still at about 134.9 petrol, 125.9 diesel.

But don't paint all stations with the same brush!!

And keep in mind, the govt. takes up to 70%!

Prices went up again in Castlebar, was 1.25 for diesel a few days ago, now 1.27. Topaz in Ballina was 1.21, not sure if they changed.
I see a lot of complaints about applegreen, how can they be that bad?

I've been using apple green diesel for years and never had a problem, or noticed a difference any time I filled up elsewhere. I think a lot of it is down to people perception of " it must be a lower grade because its cheaper " I've done a lot research into diesel as part of my engineering degree and found that most diesel is pretty much the same with some of the bigger companies ie. Topaz who add an extra additive to it to make it a bit cleaner, water content did vary a bit between some garages but this was mainly down to older storage tanks etc and not the supplied fuel. It must be pointed out, that diesel and petrol generally all arrive in the country in the same boat and all the suppliers draw from that..

Price coming down is a good and welcome sign, heating oil is also down at a time when people rely on it most... I know a petrol station owner and he's good me a few times, that they buy at x price and if the price drops before his next supply, he has to wait until his current stock is fine before lowering the price. With low margins on petrol and diesel its no wonder really, the only people making money from fuel sales is the Arabs and the government..

Was just looking around at the average price of petrol, when you consider how much it has come down now also imagine how cheap it would be only for the budget increases in recent years, approximately €0.40 added on by the government.sickening!!!

where did the other 28c come from???

its ownership some people do not see eye to eye with, so they try to disrupt their cash flow, i am no suggesting that this is the op's reason for not using them

You'll have to explain the ownership thing

I know people have an issue with topaz and brian cowan , denis obrien.

But whats the issue with applegreen?
Is it a hatred of the man in a mansion on the hill.

I think the only difference is between cars and motorbikes for petrol. Cars drink anything, but my friend used to find the local Maxol station would get him a better reaction / MPG than the local Applegreen for his motorbike, as Applegreen's additive didn't work as well with motorbikes. Perhaps some car engines are the same?

Castlebar always 7 or 8 cents dearer than ballina. Topaz 119.9, place on Killala rd (esso I think) 118.9.

Well my dear serf, that list details the total of 12c of tax increases on petrol in each budget.

There was not 40c of tax increases.

According to the AA there has been 23c per litre of fuel extra in tax added on since 2008.

That pdf isnt displaying correctly on my phone, so I might have missed some of the tax hikes.

But it still doesn't add up to 40c of tax increases for petrol

I'm in Foxford regularly so its probably worth the trip down the road to fill up.
I always knew Ballina was a couple of cent cheaper, but 7 to 8 cent is a fair bit.

Same, one local (Kells road Meath) was still looking for 1.44/l Diesel at the weekend, most the others are around 1.289 which is still ripping compared to most others.

If prices stay as low as they are, or fall even lower, come budget time, we can be guaranteed a few extra cents of duty/carbon tax..

My van doesn't like the supermarket diesel. Exhaust looks blue and smelly on it on cold starts. Also, the ferry to France is around extra €500 so each tank ends up costing almost €600 so not a solution for Irish high prices I'm afraid.

Fill the back of the van with wine to cover the costs 😉

Last time I tried I got caught by closed Supermarkets on Sunday (apart from filling station part that dispensed that low quality diesel).

They are planning to debate a motion to withdraw, which is a bit different.

They only applied to join after the crash showed how vulnerable they were on their own. The last attempt by their Government to withdraw the application was itself dropped after public protests.

Ask him if he buys at x price and then the price goes up, does he have to wait until his current stock is gone before raising the price. I suspect there's no delay then.
