running up that hill

Started running almost 2 years ago in March 2013. Since then, running has become one of the most important and enjoyable things in my life. However, training up to now could be optimistically described as "patchy". Made some classic mistakes and learned important lessons last year. I ramped up the mileage too quickly last summer in the hope of doing my first marathon (dublin). This led to a niggle, which became an injury, and then DCM was out. I also learned how quickly fitness can leave, without consistency in my training, when I expected too much and blew up spectacularly in a half marathon in late 2014.

Anyway, I read somewhere that people get serious about making improvements in their lives when their age ends in a 9, so I guess I'm in that boat too. I've lurked a bit around these parts and keeping a log will definitely help me to improve my consistency.

    Me:
29 yo male, 6ft, 10 stone, based in dublin

    PBs:
    5k 17:40 (rathfarnham)
    5m 31:10 (clontarf)
    10k 38:10 (co. clare)
10m 67 mins (dublin race series)
half 87 mins (dublin race series)

    Desires for 2015:
    Join a running club
Learn more about proper training & nutrition
Don't make the same mistakes as 2014

    Targets for 2015:
Run 5 miles under 30 minutes (target is terenure)
Run my first marathon under 3h 20m (dublin)

Best of luck vanderlyle. Joining a club is definitely the way to go, you'll be amazed as the difference it makes. Going by your 5km time you'll have no problem doing under 30mins for a 5 mile and you should be able to knock lumps out off your other PBs. Maybe have a go at doing under 30 for Raheny and set a harder target for Terenure. Google "VDOT calculator" , i find it accurate for estimating race times based on pb's in other events.

Thanks for the tip PFitz. I've only glanced at the McMillan calculator before but not VDOT. Is there much of a difference? As for the 5k time, I've taken the foot off the pedal since then, so Raheny might be too soon. But I've signed up anyway, it sounds like a really good race, and hopefully it will give me a good indicator of where I am.

Jan 8th - 10.30am - beautiful sunny run through the park

    10 miles @ 8.01 m/m = 4.59m/km

The last 6 weeks of 2014 in the run up to Christmas were almost a total write-off due to work. The plan right now is simple: get the mileage up again slowly, and do 1x tempo/faster run in each week. Hope to do a parkrun this weekend.

    Jan 10th - 9.30am - parkrun

    2 mile warmup and parkrun in 19:50. 6:23m/m = 3:58m/km

Conditions dry and clear, not too cold but windy with a few waterlogged sections of path. Struggled to keep an even pace and found myself working harder than I thought I would have to get under 20 mins. Big difference between today and the last outing 18:20 ish at the jingle bells 5k.

    Jan 17th - 9.30am - parkrun

Turned up to do a parkrun but operation transformation had taken over. Luckily time was on our side and we made another nearby parkrun with a few mins to spare.

    19:23, 6:14m/m = 3:53 m/km

Happy with this, felt much more comfortable and in control of pace and breathing than last week. Such a difference compared to last week.

A run tomorrow will see my first time to run on 4 consecutive days since last September. Still content to build up time-on-feet and easy miles. Higher quality stuff will come in time.

I focused on keeping an even effort throughout today. With one eye on the main event this year for me (DCM) I picked the route to see what that section is like, particularly from the quays up to castleknock village.

Shocked to arrive home to find Robertson 6-2 down in the snooker, he had looked unstoppable against Ronnie yesterday.

    Jan 23rd 10am

Easy 3 miles just to keep things ticking over ahead of the Raheny 5 on Sunday.

    ---

    Jan 24th 3pm - Raheny 5: 30:50 (watch)

Parked on the causeway road near the junction around 2.15pm, and walked/jogged up to the start area from there. Since I had my number collected on Saturday, I relaxed and soaked up the atmosphere & build-up. Conditions looked to be perfect, milder than recently, dry, and almost no wind.

The main plan for today was just to get under 32:00. I wanted to keep something for the hill towards the end, then push hard from there, and see what happens. One of my two goals this year is to target sub 30 in May in this distance. I thought anything under 32 mins would be good for where I'm currently at.

At the start, I found myself held up. My own fault - I started back too far. I lack confidence when lining up; a fear hits me that I won't be able to keep up with all these club jerseys. It's a stupid affliction that I can't seem to shake. It was only about 600-800m in that I began to see clearer road and run alongside people at my target pace.

Once I settled in, I was amazed at how easy it felt to keep the pace. Breathing felt very easy, and I thought "something's wrong here, it shouldn't be this easy, I'll pay later". At the 5K mark, I knew I had plenty left in the tank and would be comfortably under 32 mins. With 3/4 of a mile to go, the bunch I was running with gradually upped the effort and I went with them and gradually upped the pace. Finished strongly with 31.0x on the clock. Pleased overall. Despite the bad start, this is a good marker for later.

    Splits (in m/km): 4:00 / 3:53 / 3:50 / 4:01 / 3:39 / 3:47 / 4:00 / 3:40 for the last 1.05 km.
    Average pace: 6:09 m/m = 3:49 m/km

Thursday and Friday were taken as rest days, partly because of work and partly because of a little tightness in my right calf. I got the work done which freed up the weekend and the tightness was gone on Saturday morning.

Stuck to the soft grassy trails as much as possible for this. Total miles = 102 for January. Averaging 23 miles per week. Want to be comfortably averaging 30 mpw by the end of Feb. Building up slowly...

Met a running buddy for a few pints. He's doing the Paris marathon this year and he has sown the seed of London 2016 in my head.

Home for the weekend so took the chance to get in some miles on the quiet country roads. Met some curious ducks, geese, and turkeys on the road. Blissfully peaceful and a welcome change from the noise & traffic in Dublin.

    Sun 8th Feb - 11:00am - Tullamore GAA 5K road race/fun run

    Pre-race
My sister spotted this event on facebook, so we drove in together in the heavy fog. Perfectly still day, but the car temperature read minus 3 when we left the house and was still only minus 2 by the time we parked. Registered at 10:15 for 10e in the GAA centre then scurried back to the car to keep warm for a while longer. I had never raced in that kind of cold, and rarely ever trained in that kind of cold tbh. Chatted to a few lads that I hadn't seen for a while and got a 2 mile warm-up done with a few gentle stretches. We headed to the start line opposite the hospital, with what seemed like about 200 others.

    1st km
From the start a group of about 6 lads had quickly gained a few metres. I dodged past some local GAA players and slotted into 7th/8th place. Directly behind me was a lad in a club singlet (Portarlington I think). The pace settled down after a fast start, and we went through the first km in 3:35, with the portarlington lad at my heels.

    2nd km
We gradually gained on a man in leggings during the 2nd km. Tucked in behind him and felt the pace ease off a bit, so decided eventually to pass him. I could & should have gone by sooner, and it cost me a bit of time. Through the 2nd km in 3:48.

    3rd km
Halfway through the 3rd km, the route veered down a side road to a cone with a 180 degree turn. This diversion was to make up the 5km distance. I hate these kind of turns as they kill my rhythm, but it gave me a good sense of how others were doing behind me. I had about 3 metres on portarlington, and the man in tights was well back now. 3:40 for the 3rd km.

    4th km
With the fog, I could now see nobody ahead. This part of the route went through a particularly deserted part of town. I could feel the strain beginning now and portarlington's footsteps were sounding closer and closer. 4th km in 3:40 again.

    5th km
With about 800m to go, we came to a long left-hand bend. He drew level with me, but he was on the outside and I had the racing line. I upped the pace a bit and managed to keep him outside me. Coming off the bend onto a straight stretch we were running side-by-side, but I kept my pace to maintain the inside line for the final big left-hand turn. To keep the fear at bay, I told myself that if he could have passed me, he would have, when he made his first move.

    Last 300m
The last big bend came, with 300m to go, and with it a slight hill. I pushed a little harder, testing the water. He matched me. I pushed a little harder again. He's still there. Finally with about 200m to go, I put the hammer down. After a few seconds, I was afraid that I had gone too early. I knew that if he drew level again I would not have any more in the tank. But I managed to put a few metres between us and dipped under 18 minutes for only the second time.

    Post-race
Grabbed some water and a banana and went back to cheer my sister on. She has been working hard of late and the results are paying off. In the space of 6 months she has gone from a PB of 29 mins to today's PB of just under 26 mins. We tucked into a feast of sandwiches, water, tea, coffee, cake, chocolate, and fruit, before jogging back to the car.

    Positive
One last thought on today: the last time I ran with someone that close behind me for so long, it really got to me mentally and then physically. That day, my head kept saying "he's going to catch you" and eventually, I just wanted him to go by me to end the pain and fear. I'm convinced it affected my legs as well that day, I just felt a sickening weakness coursing through me. Today there was none of that. He was at my heels for the entire race but I did not panic, or beg for the finish line. Today will be a good day to draw on when that fear does get to me next time. I'm happy for that.

Plan for the rest of the month is to maintain 30mpw and at the start of March to begin a 5 mile plan to target sub 30 in Terenure in May.

    Sun 15th Feb - 9.30am

    13.9 miles in 2:16 = 9:48 m/m

Covered the first half of the DCM route as far as Dolphin's Barn and then back home via the south circular road. Had some water before I left, but no breakfast, and brought no water with me. Kept a steady effort throughout. I hadn't covered HM distance since last September (excluding the blow-up in Portarlington), so I decided to rest on Monday.

    Tues 17th Feb - 3pm

    7.9 miles in 53:00 = 6:44 m/m

Home today and did this in the countryside. I hate doing tempo/faster runs on roads in the city - it has to be a park or quiet country roads for me. 1.5 mile warm-up and covered the rest at about 6:30m/m pace. It was a satisfying run although my legs felt wrecked at the end and still feel weak today. Then a big stack of pancakes waiting for me when I got in - where would you be without your Mammy eh :)

    Sat - 10am

Bit all over the place today. Spectated at the operation transformation 5k in the PP. Jogged a few easy miles on the trails to warm-up. Did a few faster loops around the Munich hills. Finished off with 5 miles. No watch, reckon 9 or 10 miles in total.

Whew - long week. The last update was Sat 28/02. Received some bad news that Saturday afternoon re my Dad's health. Luckily it has been caught early so hopefully the operation will go ok and the all-clear will follow. Few days later, mrs v. and I got the keys of our house. Goodbye rented apartment, hello house & mortgage. So any free time for the rest of the week consisted of packing, cleaning and moving. The enforced rest was useful as a busy enough weekend of running was planned.

    Fri 06/03
Easy 4.4 miles in 34:30 = 7:50 m/m. After the rest days, this felt good and I hardly noticed myself going a little faster than my usual easy runs around 8m/m.

    Sat 07/03 - My 1000 hours 5K - 17:31 (new PB & 1st place)
Cycled up to the park, met my sister and did a quick warm-up. Lined up in the second row, but got caught by the surge just before the start and found myself a few rows back when the gun went off.

    1st km - 3:27
Pissed off with myself for making a bags of the start, I made a conscious effort to gain as many places as possible and after about 600m I found myself in 2nd place, with the first place runner well out in front. One more runner was close behind me, and without looking back, I sensed it was a bit of a gap back to 4th. Probably went out a little harder than I should have, so I expected the first place runner to gradually disappear into the distance.

    2nd km & 3rd km - 3:32 & 3:34
Settled into the race, pace slipped a bit. Nothing changed in terms of position. The distance to first stayed constant. The guy in 3rd was still close.

    4th km - 3:41
Coming to the top of the hill at the end of furry glen, the gap was still the same to 1st, and the 3rd place runner was still right there behind me. Out of the glen, up the hill, around the bend, and I felt good - well, by good, I mean not dying as much as that stage the last time I raced on this route. I began to notice the footsteps behind me fade a little, and I sensed a gap opening. I started asking myself, do I have enough left to push on and catch first.

    5th km - 3:17
The gap to first began to narrow with 1 km to go. I held a steady pace until we got to furze road, then gradually pushed a little harder to draw level. We ran alongside each other for a while, and at this point I was begging for the finish line. When the line eventually became visible, I pushed just a little bit harder again, enough to open a gap. My legs were starting to buckle and I knew there was very little left. My running form (if it was ever there in the first place) had completely deserted me as I hurtled towards the line, just wishing it was over already! Got there with a few seconds to spare in the end.

Quick check on the watch confirmed a PB. Turned out to be a 9-second PB from the Rathfarnham 5K last year. :) The indo photographer caught me and the leading lady for a photo :o:o I look like a tool, grinning in my tea-cosy hat. Obviously the time of 17:31 wouldn't threaten any serious race, but I was delighted to get the unexpected PB.

    Sun 08/03 - Ballycotton 10 mile - 65:18

With tired legs after Saturday's 5K, we drove down on Saturday afternoon. Met my brother who works in Cork for dinner and a beer. To cram the carbs in, I ate risotto for lunch on Saturday, a bag of honey roasted cashews in the car on the way down, and pasta with boiled potatoes for dinner on Saturday night. Set off early from Cork city on Sunday morning and parked in ballycotton in the field at the top of the hill around 11:30.

This was not a target race - more a semi-weekend away, a chance to meet my brother, enjoy the Ballycotton experience that I had heard so much about, & hopefully post a respectable time. Weather was perfect. I set off just at the back of the sub 65 mins section. My plan was to take it easy until the crowds thinned out a bit and then try to keep a steady pace and see how the legs were holding up. I wanted to leave a bit in the tank for the hill at the end. Forgot to switch my watch from km mode after Saturday's 5K, so the splits are annoyingly all in km:

    First half: 4.12/4.10/4.05/4.07/4.08/4.07/4.15/4.10
    Second half: 4.13/4.02/4.03/4.02/4.00/4.03/3.47/3.40 + 0.15

In hindsight I left far too much in the tank for the end. I could have gone much better, sub 65 should have been easily attainable. The majority of this run felt too comfortable. I should have pushed harder and upped the pace sooner - my legs were holding up fine after Saturday. The hill at the end didn't take as much out of me as I had feared it might.

It was my first time and I was amazed how slick the operation was. The whole process of getting there & getting away later ran very smoothly. Seems like nothing is left to chance. It was enjoyable & as friendly a race as I've ever been in, but it's not going to become a regular fixture in my calendar due to distance away/journey time.

Congrats on the pb and win. And on the house too - we just got the keys to ours late last year - fun and stressful at the same time!

Best of luck for everything with your dad.

Thanks Laura. So many boxes and bags I don't know where to start with unpacking. How did we accumulate so much stuff?

Think I met you briefly with Dave after the race - I thought he was actually introducing you as Vanderlyle - I was thinking 'what a strange name'..................never copped it was a boardsie handle :)

I hope your name is not Vanderlyle

:D Nope! Although Vanderlei could be a possibility.

Might catch you at the Dunboyne 4 mile - half thinking of doing it next. I've never ran a 4-miler before either.

Yes that's where I got the name from. It was only afterwards that I remembered it sounded a bit like Vanderlei.

The band were a slow burner at first, but I've grown to really like them. Saw them in the Iveagh gardens on a beautiful Friday night last summer, they were excellent.

Longest run so far this year, two laps in the park. Glorious - one of those days where you want to milk every last drop of sunshine and you don't want to stop running. Legs feel wrecked now, in the best way.

    Sun 29/03 - 3pm
    Dunboyne 4 mile - 23:09

First time running this distance, and first time ever in Dunboyne, so I was unsure what to expect. Had two targets in mind: get under 23:00 or failing that, at least keep each mile under 6:00. Met a friend beforehand and watched the last kids race before heading off for a warm-up. During my warm-up I flew through a few strides with the wind at my back down the road to the left of the start line... then I turned into the wind to jog back to the start line. The wind meant the first target would probably be out of my reach.

    Mile 1: 5:40
Recognised a few faces of some strong guys from my hometown club and I nipped in a few rows behind them near the start line. Through the town and into open country when the wind hit. I pushed hard to try to close the gap to a group ahead of me, but I couldn't manage it. A dude in sunglasses (why? :) ) near me did manage to pass me and catch the group. I cursed myself as I ended up isolated into the wind.

    Mile 2: 5:56
Struggled on into the strong wind which was coming from the left. Gained some company from a lady from MSB, who tucked in behind me. My skinny frame obviously did not provide much shelter :o because she soon passed me.

    Mile 3: 5:37
Finally turned a corner at the roundabout and with the wind behind me, I felt the pace improve. Caught the lady from MSB and was directly in front of her going through the town. She got plenty of shout-outs from the crowd. The photographer (see facebook) must have been keen for me to get out of the way, as I feature prominently in his 5 efforts at snapping her. :o

    Mile 4: 5:56
Caught the sunglasses dude from earlier as we went through the estate. Not much left in my tank when I realised we were turning on to the same stretch of road where I had warmed up earlier - running into the wind, again with nobody to hide behind. Spotted a very welcome 800m road marking and managed to get the pace up again to keep the last mile under 6:00.

Pleased to keep all 4 miles under 6:00. 10 seconds faster would have been nice though. Should have a decent chance of going sub 30 in 5 miles, in hopefully less windy conditions in a few weeks time.

    Tues 31/3
    6.6 miles @ 7.35m/ incl strides
    http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6569427

    Wed 01/04
Reading ahead on the Pfitzinger marathon plan I hope to start in June, I decided on an 8 mile run with 3 miles @ 15K-HM pace.

8.1 miles total including 3 miles @ 6:23/6:24/6:14. This was way too fast. Lost the plot completely on the 3rd mile. Need to bring these back towards 6:30-6:33.

thats a superb run in those conditions.
The Dunboyne race thread has a stat that shows the average of the top 50 finishers was ~40 seconds slower this year than last year.

I reckon that sub 30 for 5 miles is a gross under estimation of your abilities right now.

.....and the MSB lady (team mate) is worth a nice photograph :)

Visiting the folks at home for Easter, Thurs night-Sun night.

    Thurs 02/04 - 6pm

    Fri 03/04 - 12.30pm
    7.0 miles @ 9m/m

Catch-up jog with a friend at home. Our school used to do a sponsored walk on this route, so we set out with nostalgia in mind. I recalled trying to run the sponsored walk one year in school. What started as a confident run that day eventually deteriorated into a hop-along shuffle/limp, and I couldn't walk properly for a week afterwards.

    Sat 04/04 - 12.30pm
    7.9 miles progression run

    Sun 05/04 - 11.30am
    3.6 miles @ 7:35m/m

    Mon 06/04 - 10.00am
    Raheny/Battle of Clontarf 10 mile
    62:50 (avg pace 6:17)
I expected a PB at this as my previous best was soft at 65:18. Beautiful morning, great location in St Anne's Park. It's a mostly flat route entirely within the park, but the course itself was a bit confusing with some loops and sharp turns. That said, it was planned very well and the marshals were helpful and encouraging at all the corners. Between this and the Raheny 5, they're two of the best-organised races I've done, and I'd recommend them to anyone.

Little bit of soreness/niggle in my right calf after this, so might take a rest day tomorrow.

Next up: BHAA 10km in Straffan on Saturday.

Niggle didn't go away. Kept the mileage very low this week with a couple of short recoveries all on grass. Still not feeling right this morning, so BHAA 10k got the chop. Headed up to the park instead to watch the great ireland. Hopefully next week will see an improvement.

Decided to get the leg checked out. The strain, though only slight and not painful, was not shifting. Went to see a therapist on a friend's recommendation who gave me a massage and some basic stretches to be performed every day to help fix and strengthen the area. Gradually getting the miles back up to where I had been before. Nothing strenuous, all at 7:50-8:10 m/m, around trails in the park. The leg is as good as new, so the BHAA 5 mile in RTE is next up at the weekend.

    Sun 19/04
7.1 miles in 58:09. House-warming party the night before. This cleared away the hangover nicely.

    Tues 21/04
    7.8 miles in 61:31

    Wed 22/04
    7.4 miles in 57:42

    Thurs 23/04

    Friday
    Rest

    Sat 25/04 - BHAA RTE 5 mile
    29:08 average pace 5:50m/m

This was my first BHAA race on a cloudy, cold & wet but thankfully relatively windless day. Parked early and registration went smoothly. Surprised to see squash courts and what I assumed from a distance to be a sauna in the RTE social centre - nice facilities!

After an aborted start, we were away, and I quickly settled into a rhythm of just under 6 minutes/mile. The route consisted of 4 laps, on more-or-less flat roads. Maybe it was the cloud-cover, or the sharp turns at the end of the straights, or the trees on Ailesbury rd, but something played havoc with my watch's signal. The pace reading varied from 5:35 to 6:20 at times, so I ended up not paying too much attention to pace, just focusing on the elapsed time as I passed the mile markers. Happily, each mile marker was showing me on-target for sub 30.

At the finish, I didn't know that they would want the race number back. It must have taken me 5 minutes to unclasp the safety pins with my numb fingers. Then there were a few murmurings that the route was short. My own watch read 4.95, and I heard someone say 7.9km... for the reasons mentioned above, I chose to ignore those voices :)

Gradually moving towards the marathon plan now. To that end, I wanted to test the waters a little with one medium long-ish run, and one marathon pace run, with plenty rest for now in the form of two days off either side (Tues & Thurs). Ended up running the marathon pace a bit faster than I had wanted, need to steady the pace a bit next time.

    Monday 27/04
    5.7 miles easy at 7.45 m/m

    Wednesday 29/04
    Medium long run
    10.6 miles at 8.19m/m

Yes Dublin, and since it will be my first marathon, there's a fair degree of uncertainty.

Sub 3 would be the ultimate dream goal, but it could be too much of a stretch. I haven't worked out Goal #2 yet.

Best of luck with it, I'm a bit off where you are now but I'd be very interested to see how you can convert recent form into a marathon time, are you following a plan?

Thanks. When I'm home from holidays in early June, I'll be starting an 18-week P&D plan & following it as closely as possible. I'll have roughly 3 extra weeks in early June to play around with, so that will give me more time to gradually build up the distance of the long runs.

The only deviation I'm currently planning for is a short taper for the Tullamore half marathon, which I want to run for a PB. It's in late August. There will be a few other races too hopefully during the summer, but no targets meriting skipping the P&D plan.

    Hey vanderlyle,
Am on a similar schedule as yourself for DCM, though not near the times you're hitting, so will be following your log to see how you're getting on. Looking to follow P&D from late June so concentrating on just mileage at the moment. Best of luck

Thanks Henry. Good luck with it. I'll probably start my plan a week ahead of schedule to allow for taper + recovery around the half marathon in August.

This week again was mostly testing out the first few runs from the marathon plan.

It's sheltered, straight, on a very slight incline (running eastward), not far from home, and whatever wind you do feel is at your back if you run eastward.

Woke up with a headache and a bit of dizziness and generally felt like shít. 400m down the road and I wished I was still in bed. My ankles and legs felt stiff, and a side stitch developed, which I rarely get anymore. Gradually came around and by 1 mile in, I was feeling much better. I was going through the hospital in kilmainham when the rain began. By the end, my legs felt fresh and head felt clear. I can't think what could have caused me to feel so bad this morning.

Hoping to visit my local parkrun (waterstown) tomorrow for the first time.
