I'd go the game plan Madrid had last season.

Di Maria in the Di Maria position.
    Herrera in the Modric position
    Blind/Carrick in the Alonso position.

Rooney, RVP and Januzaj up top (Adnan for his pace - it isn't massive but mroe than Rooney, RVP or Falcao).

    De Gea
    Rafael--Smalling-Rojo--Shaw
    Blind
    Herrera----Di Maria
    -Rooney----RVP---Januzaj

Rooney allowed a free role. Januzaj told to offer width and running down the channel, RVP to stay central.

Herrera and Di Maria have proven themselves as players that will go box to box for their team and do the dirty work.

Madrid played a 4-2-3-1 last season... Alonso and modric in the holding midfield role. benzema up top with Ronaldo di maria and isco all playing across the line behind

After Southampton game only game he played 90 mins was against Cambridge.

I quoted your post because you made this point "I haven't the stats at hand LiamO (ok, I'm sitting at the internet so I do have the stats at hand, just not the time at the moment to go in search of them), but to my mind's recollection Fellaini has been played as a sub more often"

So I was just providing you stats, which in turn means I was helping you ;)

Giggsy if you were helping me you would have supplied Herrera's stats too, come on like, do it right or not at all! :D

Seriously though, thanks, I was just summising that everyone else seems to have had decent sub minutes when Herrera hasn't and I feel that it's more than just form and fitness that's keeping him off the field because of that. Fellaini has had a fair few sub appearances since the Southampton game.

If you think so Bangkok, fire ahead. Not going to argue it with you.

Funny how you seem to think Bale didn't play for Madrid last season though. meh.

Read an interesting article there claiming Van Gaal told Memphis Depay to stay at PSV this season after the world cup. That it would be beat for his developement.

    Having a sensational season.

Would be an interesting one to watch. Caught s highlight reel over the weekend of him and he seems in blistering form.

I agree. The way Van Gaal has used Herrera is just facepalmworthy. He is our best CM when it comes to contribution to all phases of game. He is good defensively and fights for every 50-50 ball, can attack and is available for passes too. Also when he plays Mata and Di Maria plays well.

Here is the comparison with few best CMs in the league.

In around half of the games Di Maria played, if not more, he played in a 433, in the midfield, on the left of the midfield.

The transition of Madrid to that formation, and Di Maria's use in that position, were WIDELY spoken about last season. It is also a role he performed for Argentina.

Di Maria played in midfield for Madrid quite a bit last season - to say otherwise is simply a lie, bangkok. He also played up in an attacking midfield role - but any cursory reading on the subject would show that to suggest it is the only role he played was up top (or that my description of madrids tactics was wrong) is just utter crap.

I was going to say that too, but felt that it could easily be dismissed as 'superstition' or something like that (Think I saw a stat that every time Di Maria and Herrera played together pre-January, one of them scored).

Everything you said above is true as far as I'm concerned, plus his stats are very solid alongside the PL's best and yet he still can't get a game and is barely used as a sub.

Definitely has to be more than meets the eye with this one.

Zerks or anyone want to get a match thread going? The only match thread I started this season was the loss against Southampton a few weeks back, so with a record of 100% failure this season I'm going to suggest someone else start it!

I'm on a good run so I'll get on it.

By the way not sure if mentioned here, but seems only the Telegraph reported LVG's quote properly, the rest butchered it.

He outlined his top priority in the summer is a "commanding" central midfielder, not a creative one. Also was bored on lunch and did some reading around some of the "targets" we had over the last few windows. Seemingly the consensus is Vidal has been poison this season.

Indeed - he DID mention creative midfielders - but that he needs a new CM to provide balance to the side in light of the creative players we already have. So a holding/combative one that will give more freedom to the others.

Vidal is playing bad? Most times u
I checked live score he seemed to provide goals or assists,

Vidal's range of mobility seems to have been checked every time I look at him. He takes great care turning now. Legs no problem, range of movement is another issue.

A lot of hype about Januzaj last season but I'd just like to say James Wilson looks like a really good prospect going forward. He's a bit raw at the minute but he's got a serious finish on him and pace to burn. Been far more impressed with him than Falcao this season.

I do the same sort of checks on livescore throughout the week and can't remember seeing him much. Was just bored and doing some reading to see how the "targets" we had, are doing now. All I was reading about Vidal is that he's looked laboured since his World Cup return and hasn't recaptured the form that propelled him into the spotlight, might be just a few analysts odd opinions though.

Remember we were meant to be chasing this fella?

    meant to be?

We absolutely were, along with a load of other top clubs.

He was training with United for a little bit and the club obviously felt he wasn't the talent he was getting billed to be, or he rejected us.

    I've heard the same.

As I have many a time argued regarding Rooney and Giggss in particular - scoring or assisting does not mean you actually had a good game.

yes vidal is having a very poor season by his standards. I said it when we were linked with him last year that we should have been looking at pogba instead as the type of game vidal plays he wouldn't last much longer at it and it looks like that has started to show sooner than I thought it would

I've wachted PSV maybe six times this season, Depay has looked very good. He's got impressive athleticism to go with his skill, always getting into the box and causing trouble. Though as always, how he would adjust to the PL, the probable requirement for more defensive discipline and whether or not he will keep his athleticism, all remains to be seen.

Thankfully the pitch tonight won't be a mud bath like Bradford, some 5000 United fans will be in the " Bill Shankley" kop end, hopefully all our goals go in that end ;-)
