Cronise began a regimen of cold showers and shirtless walks in winter, and he lost 26.7 pounds in six weeks. He began measuring his metabolism during and after cold exposure, and found that his body was burning a tremendous amount of energy

At what point did common sense or hypothermia set in?

It's fairly well know that cold weather ups your metabolism, as your body must work harder to maintain core temp.

Even drinking iced water burns small amounts if extra energy as you body works to raise it up to your core temp.

Neither of these effects are significant outside of extreme cases.
