Free postage. So just work out the £/€ conversion on £399.

Literaly bought this a week ago for 499 :( Wonder if Amazon would give me back the difference or should I send it back...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,036 ✭✭✭BArra

Email amazon asking about the pricedrop, I'll bet they will refund you the difference saying something like this is a one time goodwill gesture of a refund

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,002 ✭✭✭jay-me

What do I say though? I see there is a recent `price drop can you refund me or how would I approach it?

Currys has the same projector for €529, current conversion rate the Amazon one would cost about €510, here's the link in case you guys prefer to get it from Currys.

Its worth sending them an email/contacting customer services. They are usually very good when this happens.I have gotten the difference refunded a few times when prices changed within a few days of purchasing.
If they dont refund its probably still worth sending it back and then buying again at the reduced rate.

Is this the best projector around at the moment for the price?

I am looking to possibly install in my sitting room and want something with good picture quality, quiet and neat so thinking this might fit the bill?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,002 ✭✭✭jay-me

Got it sorted via chat! Have to send it back and purchased another one just there. Some saving and could have saved an extra 11 pounds sending it to Parcel Motel but I don't trust them with something that expensive.

They are based in Belfast too, they are on Boards under 'Talk To...' post them a PM and ask them about it, I had my TV delivered from their UK store via the north for standard delivery ~€20.

Unless things have changed any offer on their UK site unless otherwise stated (instore only, etc.) is availabe over here.

While I don't own this Projector, I did a lot of research into its previous version and it's easily one of, if not the best value for money HD projector out there, I might pick this up if i can break the piggy bank.

I just grabbed the Optoma H181x 720p projector instead of the one in the OP for GBP299 on the Amazon Boxing Day sale:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Optoma-H181x-Ready-Entertainment-Projector/dp/B00P2OOQXQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1419630322&sr=1-1&keywords=H181x

It is only 720p instead of 1080p but for 100 less and as this is my first ever projector I will see how I go and if I need to upgrade at a later date I will...

It gets very good reviews as well so hopefully will be a decent first foray into the world of home projectors!

I don't think you'll go wrong with a 720p Optoma. I have a Optoma HD65 720p for the past 6 years and don't notice pixelation over approx 6 feet. Only needed to change the bulb twice at 100euro a pop and another plus is, if you've no set top box, like sky/upc, then there's no need for a tv licence.

There are negatives tho (at least with mine) - fan noise and really only performs optimally in a pitch dark room. Doesn't bother me tho as I only use it at night.

How do these compare to the viewsonic

I considered both Optoma and ViewSonic (posted those deals here in boards too) and the ViewSonic has an offer running that will get you two active 3D glasses (probably worth around 50 quid). Another plus for ViewSonic is that is an LCD projector compared to Optoma's older DLP colour wheel setup which is known to have rainbow effect issues to some people. On the other hand, ViewSonic is more of a cross-over projector (business as well as HT), so emphasis seems to be on brightness than colour accuracy etc. Some reports of the image looking cr*p, but there are ways to tune it apparently. And there are comments on ViewSonic's warranty and support... so I don't know.

There's also Optoma HD181X 720p on Amazon going for £299.

Anyway, I ordered Optoma HD141X. Can't wait to get it delivered!

The H181X is back to £349 now, was only on offer in a lightning deal last night for a few hours for £299, that is when I grabbed it...

Anyone know of a cheap cart or something like that so that the projector can be wheeled easily into other rooms as I would like it portable between the sitting room and kids playroom.

these type of projectors are pretty light, so not much problem moving them around. Would always wait a few minutes for bulb to cool down before moving it though.

Looks like the lightning deal for the optoma H181X is on again at 6pm so you can probably pick it up for £299 again if anyone is interested...

The one thing I did not like about the HD141x was that there is no USB power so you can't power a TV stick or Chromecast so you would have to have another cable running from it.

I am happy enough with the H181x for £100 less...

Can you power a Chromecast on a 181X?

I have been thinking about how to hook up the 141X I ordered (Amazon, shipped today), and I thought since 141X has an mhl port, there might be TV sticks out there that will connect and power using mhl port. I am not sure if my understanding of mhl port and expectations are realistic, my other idea was to connect the PS3 as the game + Plex player, but apparently PS3's cinevia security thing won't play most of my movie collection.

Mhl provides power so the chromecast should work. I've been thinking about getting a projector for a while now and am stuck between this one and the benq w1070, it's only 610 on richersounds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭reni10

Yes the H181x has USB power on it so I will be connecting my Amazon FireTV Stick to it so will not need another power cable for it.

The mini USB on the HD141x will not power any devices.

I don't think there are many TV stick devices yet that support MHL.

The Chromecast does not support MHL so you will need another power cable for it on HD141x

Okay, reading up more on MHL, apparently you can get a cheap MHL adapter that will still between your typical android TV stick's HDMI and projectors mhl, which allows powering the stick from mhl port thru HDMI. Although not sure if that would work with Chromecast. Roku 3 seems to have complete mjl support, and great reviews, if a not on the expensive side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,430 ✭✭✭positron

Perhaps its the streaming stick that runs powered by mhl HDMI port. Sorry for typos etc, on phone here.

Can you not hook up the USB to one of the ports on your bluray player or console since you'll obviously be using one? Unless if you've them setup too far away from the projector like if it's ceiling mounted. Kind of disappointing that it doesn't have it's own ports to be fair

I won't be using a console or a blue ray player I will just use the FireTV stick directly connected to 1 of the HDMI sockets and then power it from the H181x USB socket.

This way I only need 1 cable which powers the actual projector itself so no messy wires all over the room.

Then as the FireTV stick also has Bluetooth I will just wirelessly connect to a Bluetooth soundbar so no messy speaker wire either.

If I had gone for the HD141 I would need to have run another power or HDMI cable so as I will probably ceiling mount the projector so the least amount of cables the better for me...

I haven't found any specific mhl adapters that works completely off the mhl port power. Looks like the whole mhl, miracast thing is still kinda evolving. So roku ready streamer is one of the devices that will work with and using mhl power. I am sure there might be couple of Chinese clones that does the same, but definitely not as common as the USB powered TV streaming sticks.

Anyway, my set up is going to be a PS3 and perhaps a streaming stick (roku or fire TV) and if I have to power it via USB its no big deal, I could just bring a simple extension lead with just two plugs to the projector and run everything off it. Fingers crossed.

Is the 5 year warranty exclusive to Richersounds? Or would Pc World down south offer the same warranty?

    Thanks

Do the lamps cost a lot?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,430 ✭✭✭positron

After a bit of googling, this is the replacement lamp for this projector:

    http://shop.optomausa.com/lamp_data.php?p_no=943

$179 on Optoma USA. I am surprised this is not on Amazon / eBay etc, not sure why.

PS: Actually it IS on amazon. Part No "SP.8VH01GC01", £117.
