True detective for me. wonderfully filmed, great plot and most importantly excellent performances by the two male leads.

i haven't bothered to watch Fargo is it any use ?

How to get away with murder. first 9 episodes were brilliant.

Have watched both and although TD is decent but very overrated, Fargo blows it out of the water for me. BBT was just sublime in it.

The Missing and The Affair are worth a shout too.

I can't think of many besides the two you mentioned and I rate TD higher.

Happy Valley. Fargo a close second.

The 100 - first 5 episodes are so aren't the best, but then it finds itself and really enjoyable since.

    Transparent.

Longest I've ever had to wait between watching a pilot and jumping into the second episode but it was well worth the wait.

Still surprised with the lack of attention it gets on this board.

    The series was sublime.

I loved True Detective. Also liked Fargo and The Knick a lot.

True Detective was immense, but dragged a little towards the end, thought Happy Valley rocked my boat more ultimately. :)

Not sure if Hinterland was first shown in 2014. If not then of the few new shows I've seen the affair narrowly beats true detective.

Never heard of transparent. Must rectify that.

havent got around to Fargo yet, i liked TD but it is fairly overrated, the ended was a massive let down, up to the last 2 episode it would have been a great season of tv, but sadly it was not meant to be,

2 new shows that i really enjoyed this year were Tyrant and Satisfaction, not really stand out shows by any means but both were pretty solid series from start to finish, and ones that im really looking forward to coming back,

probably the worst new series i seen myself this year was The Strain, such a massive let down, i real missed opportunity

Z Nation for just pure mindless crazy fun.

The Leftovers is by far the best new series I've seen this year.

Fargo, Happy Valley, Broadchurch and The 100 for me.

    I'd second this.
    - Radioactive zombies
    - Meth zombies
    - Stoned zombies
    - Fast and slow zombies
    - King of the zombies

This show has it all. Super fun

The 100 started in March 2014, so for all intents and purposes it definitely falls under the heading of "Best New TV Show of 2014"...

The tv series Fargo was outstanding. True Detective was sublime. McConnaughey Harrelson and Michelle Monaghan all incredible. It was a creepy Gothic masterpiece. Best script I ever heard. Existential and thought provoking. The theme song was great too

I forgot Power which was a top notch show on Starz.

True Detective was just perfection in every way. So many people have told me they found it too slow, but having absorbed all it had to offer at what I now deem to be a perfect pace, I'm finding other series so rushed in comparison. It's one of the best pieces of work I've seen in years (TV or cinema) but I don't think I could re-watch it as it took me slightly beyond my wimpy threshold of fear.

I'm loving The Knick 9 episodes in.
I'm just slightly disappointed that the addiction storyline has become so central a theme, as I much prefer the medical and social history angle. 'Doctor on Drugs' has been done to death on TV in recent years.

I mistakenly started out this post with Peaky Blinders, which is brilliant also, but alas debuted in 2013. Looking forward to checking out some of the recommendations.

A few standouts for me were:

Top of the Lake - Atmospheric mystery beautifully set in a gorgeous rural New Zealand community. Excellent performances and exceptional cinematography. Weird Kiwi accent from Mad Men's Peggy.

True Detective - I shouldn't have liked this. I usually hate Matthew McConnaughey and am not WH's biggest fan either but this show was sublime. Loved MMc's performance.

Gomorrah - In a year that Love/Hate was being shoved down everybody's throat as one as a cross between the Wire and Soprano's, Gomorrah actually achieved something much closer. Excellent action scenes reminiscent of Michael Mann's Heat and compelling performances from most of the principals added to a great score and camera work. Cannot wait until the second season.

Wasn't Top of the Lake a 2013 show?

I've fallen out of love with Amazon instant video (you get into a series, get through season 2, click to start season 3. . . .and they're looking for more money :mad:) but I stumbled across Transparent recently and I do agree that it's very very good. My vote for 2014 will go to True Detective though.

Can't wait for Bosch which starts this month iirc!

I didn't hear of that show until you posted that comment. Just finished season 1 now and wow.

I'll definitely watch it again. Absolutely fantastic.
