Grip :(

    Hi guys
Started deadlifting recently and find my grip is letting me down big time :( I imagine it will get better as I continue to DL, but is there anything else I can do alongside this to help speed it up? I am using a mixed grip at the moment as well.

    Thanks in advance.

I had this problem too. Still do. For me it just got better with time.

I always do deadlifting first in my workout.

Also found the likes of pulls ups and bent over barbell rows to help.

Thanks Gift - I do barbell rows on the same day as DLs so hopefully they will help too.

Chalk, no chalk = no deadlift

I've also started doing deadlifts recently and found that chalk is brilliant, the ordinary stuff that is, not the liquid one I hate the feeling of it. Straps are handy to have but they won't help you get better grip, they'll just alleviate the problem of holding the bar.

Same here. Started deadlifting about 6 months ago for the first time in my life. Was fine and making decent progress until grip started letting me down a few months ago. Somebody recommended a chalk ball from Jackson Sport just over €4 delivered - bargain! :)

Deadlifted 170kg today myself anyway - with a bit of chalk, raw, no belt. Happy with that :)

Thanks guys, looks like chalk is the way to go, though the gym doesn't allow it :(:( Is it this one Unkel? http://www.jackson-sports.com/en/Lyon-Equipment-Chalk-Ball-Reviews/r-7214.aspx

Might try and sneak it in if I am not too messy (and I am a girl so maybe nobody will ever suspect me :P:D)

They'd probably allow the liquid type, it comes in a bottle and it leaves no mess. I don't like it as it gets lumpy on my hands sometimes, but other people love it.

I don't know if my gym allows it or not but I keep it in a little zippy tesco bag and stick my hands in that. No muss no fuss

Yep that's the one! I should have put up the link for you, sorry about that.

    Happy deadlifting :)

Have this problem with shrugs myself, doing shrugs with 28kg dumbbells at the moment and there's nothing more frustrating than getting a great pump in the shoulders and traps, but missing your target because the dumbbell slides through your fingers until you have to put it down or crush your pinky against the weight part :(

Alternate your grip (one over, one under)

    Use chalk, liquid or powder.

At the end of every deadlift workout - grab a bar double overhand and hold it for 5 sets of 15-30 seconds - 30s should be the upper limit for how long you can hold it because of the weight. Once all sets go above 15 seconds, increase the weight.

If all sets go over 30 seconds, it's too light.

Farmers walks help me, great for grip. I do them now on deadlift days
