I have one of these, paid about 70 for it - I love it, not only for the step counting but for the vibrating when I get a call or text, and the vibrating when I walk away from my phone. Would definitely recommend. However, if you're incredibly fussy about the steps thing, online reviews suggest it undercounts by about 10%. Fine by me, I would prefer one that undercounts to one that over counts, it's just a means to moving more.

I'd go with the Sony one personally. I got one a month or so ago and it's pretty handy and at this price it's brilliant.

    Bought miband from merimobiles.com/europe-warehouse .
    Currently only unlocks Xiaomi phones.
Only works with Xiaomi app but app is in english.
    No web interface.
Pretty good for the money though and may get better if they
open up to third party developers.

Also note it requires Android 4.4 - app doesnt work on older versions

It's in store at that price, they seem to have some amount of stock so wouldn't be killing myself to get (they're also in the Harvey Norman cpw concessions)

Mainly it works the same as a pedometer, but seems to be a lot more detailed in terms of running etc. It will also take ur weight and height and work out calorie uaage

Can't answer regarding that particular phone but know that Kitkat & bluetooth 4.0 are pre-requisites

Seems there are three apps required to operate/use the band effectively

Anyone looking for one, CPW concession in HN Blanchardtown had stock as of 7pm last evening

I got one for my wife and it works fine with her Nexus 4.
She particularly likes the sleep tracking feature.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,973 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

Got this today. 99.99 down to 29.99.
It's a Christmas present though so I have to wait to open it!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 673 ✭✭✭GekkePrutser

Thanks for the heads-up, got this yesterday in Galway!

I got it mainly for sleep tracking - it doesn't seem very accurate so far as I was lying in bed reading last night (on my phone no less so it should know I'm not asleep) and it classified this time as 'light sleep' instead of 'awake' :)

However maybe it tunes itself.. It's way more comfortable to wear than my Pebble smartwatch though. I'm not really a watch person but it feels like something I could wear all day.

Everyone loves buying gadgets but I just can't justify this one. If it told the time then yeah maybe. It doesn't does it? Did I miss that?

Vibrates for notifications but your phone obviously does same in your pocket. When are you ever 10meters away from your phone when you just have to have it on silent? You can hear it Vibrate anyway.
Pedometers are kinda silly, it's just walking, you know if you've walked miles or not on any given day, and they are very inaccurate.
When I listen to music I listen to albums, I don't really skip past songs. That's just me.
Sleep aps on phones are more accurate sitting on the edge of your bed surely?

There's a massive reduction on these because they are useless things. Sorry for moaning but am I missing something? I genuinely want to know as I love gadgets, enjoy a bargain and I have a z1 to pair it with ;-)

Just an update on this. If i paid the original price for this then I'd be so annoyed. The only useful thing I've found is the vibration on phone calls and texts. It goes to sleep mode on a timer and says I'm in a sleep when I'm sitting on the couch watching tv late at night.
It would be great if sony could release a heart rate monitor that fits in to the band for exercising. It timed my walk pretty accurately the last day though.

It would be more beneficial to someone with a routine and whose main form of exercising is walking.

I got one and have been using it for the last two weeks. I like the sleep tracking function and the steps taken. I tend to keep looking at my wrist to see the time but apart from that I'd consider it a nice product for the price. Today I was in a noisy place and got the vibrating alert for a call I would have missed otherwise. No complaints here.

  • So are they €20 everywhere?

thats how I see it but for 20 quid fair enough
the 99 euro on the other hand...you would really need your head tested to
spend that kind of money on something like this but surely they have sold feck all at the original price anyway

Its gamification of your physical activity.

Its attempting to tap into the thing that makes you want to get achievements in games by "rewarding" you for being physically active.

I have a fitbit, which is even more just a pedometer than this (does not have notifications etc). I'm not using it as much as I was, but during the summer it was working really well for me. I was trying hard to make sure I met my steps "goal" of 10,000 steps every day. Get home after work and I'm still only on 5000 steps? Better bring the dog for a walk so

Its a little harder when its pissing rain and dark outside though!

Picked up one of these today in Athlone (The one beside Kilmartins) for €20, looked like there was at least one more behind the counter.

Also picked up ear muff headphones for 99c, they have a mic built in. Bit naff looking but work pretty good! would make a decent present if you could sit on them til next year!

    Thanks for the info.

Ordered the Xaiomi MiBand yesterday but also picked one of these up in CPW for €20..

.. since I ordered the MiBand from Gearbest for €15, it'll probably be a few weeks before it's here - so I'll assess both and see on whichever one I don't use.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭Beano

can somebody confirm the price in-store for me? people are saying 20 but it is showing as 29.99 on their website.

I was in the same boat Basq....but I cancelled my MiBand order. The app looks a bit rubbish in comparison to the Sony's. Also I got completely fed up trying to sign up for an account with Xiaomi. Don't know why but I just couldn't get past the CAPTCHA! I'd still be interested in your opinion of the two though.

The instore stock was further reduced from 29.99 to 19.99. I picked mine up before New Year's.

The battery life on the Sony could be it's downfall though.. it says 5 - 7 days but I'm seeing plenty of reports of 3 days.

Think my MiBand is shipping shortly so for €15, I'll opt for both and see how I get on with them.

Got it @20 today in Liffey Valley

My "review" from the other thread
I am wearing one at the moment, I dont think its as good as my fitbit flex. It disconnects from my phone a few times every hour, especially when doing data heavy things on the wifi (watching videos). The notification that it sends when it disconnects stops videos playing. Going by the app reviews im not the only one wtih the disconnecting problem.

You need to install at least 2 apps, I think it could be 3 for it to work.

I think the fitbit app is better too

Overall i think the fitbit is better. Sony is nicer looking I'll give it that

  • Isn't the Fitbit about four times more expensive?

I'm getting about 3-4 days out of it but in fairness, 30 minutes in the charger and it's good to go again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,264 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

Its about 3 times going by Basqs thread, but sure if the the thing is disconnecting from your phone 20 times a day and doesn't have as good an app I would question if its even worth 1/3 of the price, like its not good whats the point buying it at all. Maybe other people are having better luck with it though

    EDIT:

Actually this is a plus for the sony, the fact it takes a micro usb as a charger

    Quick question

Friend was going to buy but maplin said it doesn't work with iPhone which is grand but says you need to have it syncing with phone/laptop all day long? Is this correct?

The one I have stores the data for up to 15 days and then you can load on pc

AFAIK it only works with android phones. I have a cheap android that i use to sync it to. I don't carry the phone with me so i sync it overnight, and when i get home in the evening.

As an aside i find it to be quite a neat little device, and that's after using a fitbit.

I got mine from Tinydeal. It cost €16 inc 12 day shipping. I ordered it on the 27th of december, and had it by last Friday.
It should work fine with your Moto G, since it supports Bluetooth LE, and the app will work with Android 4.4+.

There is a modified app here - http://en.miui.com/thread-53761-1-1.html - it does notifications and a few extras that the stock app does not.
There is also a guy working on reverse engineering the BLE protocol so it can be used with Sleep as Android and Google Fit.
