On tonight's programme, the RTÉ Investigations Unit's undercover report on Aras Attracta Care Home in Mayo.

I heard Barry O'Kelly, reporter with Primetime's Special Investigations Unit being interviewed by Pat Kenny this morning about this uncover report. I found it very upsetting to listen to accounts of how some staff were slapping, shouting and kicking residents. The disturbing thing about Aras Attracta is HIQA had inspected the home in February and in June they reported "that there were good practices across the service"

Most of these places do have CCTV but anyone who wants to abuse a resident will find ways of doing so out of view, in the bathroom or when they're outside the facility - i.e travelling somewhere.

I heard some clips today in Matt cooper show. Tbh they were tough to hear. Wtf is wrong with people? I can never understand how a few people can do this together. How can you think that another 'carer' is also a fcuked up idiot like you who will allow you to mistreat another human being so horribly. The whole health system has its faults. Nurses are now drug dispensers and pen pushers. While cleaners have been left with the job of caring for the weak and unwell.

If I live to be old I just hope I have the freedom to be independent.

Children and adults who are unable to speak are so vulnerable.

I've a friend who has a teenage son who has autism and is non-verbal, over a series of days last year he recorded abuse he was receiving from his SNA and teacher on his iPad as he had no other way of communicating his concerns to his parents. Needless to say the child was removed from the school without delay but I'd strongly recommend family members to call unannounced to schools, pre-schools, creches and care homes, even if you think everything is going well.

I just can't understand the mindset of these carers.....

The program about the creche's left myself and little grey in tears.

I dread to think about this viewing. It gives a shiver up your spine that a very vulnerable family member would be abused in this way by these savages. It's too good a word for them actually...

I'm studying social care and am currently on placement. This is going to be a very difficult watch but I feel it is important to view it.

Having worked as a carer for years, I know I'll find this upsetting. I've always had the attitude that I treat the people I care for the way I would like my family members to be treated. Unfortunately not everyone takes that approach.

You'd be shocked how complacent people can get. If you've ever had a day in work where you're just fed up, and going through the motions, you'll know that your work suffers. And unfortunately some people who work as carers are the same. People have bad days, sure. But I firmly believe you leave your sh't at the door and NEVER let it affect others.

I hope at some stage the staff concerned who are to blame get exactly what they deserve.

It's high time bad people get what they deserve.

I think Ivy should be in specialist care, not in a community home...They are playing on her fears and making her stressed, that is not going to achieve anything...

This is strangely like the creche, this obsession with controlling the adults/children to do nothing. Not letting the children "play" unless it was "playtime". Not letting this poor lady walk around - why does she HAVE to sit on the chairs all the time????

I thought they were particularly cruel, people with autism can get very attached to certain objects and if a favourite item is taken from them they can become extremely distressed. There seems to be a serious lack of knowledge on the part of the staff.

So I take it they are all employees of the HSE? Will anything become of this or will they be exempt from blame because they are HSE staff? Plenty of good coverage there that can't be argued with.

I reckon some of these so called carers will claim that they were suffering from work related stress and the HSE will probably pay them while they're on leave :mad:

The one thing I'm seeing from this is the lack of activities for the residents, sitting inside all day..no wonder they are cracking up.
As for the care assistants ..how much are they getting paid?

Christ, fair play to Mary's sister, no way I'd have been able to keep my composure after seeing a relative treated like that. I'd be livid.

A lot of people over there will know exactly who these staff are , blurred faces or not. Hopefully hanging their heads in shame after this is seen buy the local community :mad:
