I recently started teach a seriously fit friend how to swim.

The payback is that I have a fair few day passes to their gym, so this week, we did a yoga class together.

It was pretty intense and hard work as I'm not that fit and since I've had dreadful DOMS in my upper inner thighs
    What muscles are involved? Hamstrings?

Unusual to get DOMS from yoga as you normally using body weight only rather than loaded weight but it can happen I supppose with enough stretching. it doesn't sound like your hamstrings but your abductor muscles. Were you doing movements like the straddled forward bend as this gives quite a stretch to your inner thighs- as do movements such as goddess pose (or maybe God pose in case you're male :D ) The muscles here are actually difficult enough to isolate and rarely get a good stretch as we tend not to use them for normal day to day activities but I find a sumo squat in the gym gives them a good workout too.

Two warrior poses and lots of planks were the main exercises, there was a lot of stretching.

I would have thought it was pretty common to get DOMS after yoga if you haven't done it before. Does it really matter though knowing exactly which muscles are affected? Knowing isn't going to make it go away any sooner.
