vitamin d - supplement?

I discovered yesterday that almost everyone in my office takes a vitamin d supplement. Apparently the government health department recommends it during winter months.

I have long been a believer in getting your vitamins from food but is this one an exception? I do eat quite a lot of oily fish and pickled herring (best food source) and fortified milk. Is this enough?

I am near enough to the arctic circle, so the days are about five hours long right now and the sun is very low in the sky.

It possibly is enough. Possibly isn't.

You should be looking to get 600+ IU/day.

It's very very probable you aren't.

    5 hours light a day.
You work in an office, presumably during these daylight hours.
Those foods you listed might be the best food sources of vitamin D but there far from the best sources.

For example, Christmas pudding might be the best food source of alcohol but if you want to get drunk, Christmas pudding just isn't going to cut it.

Is D3 not even better for you again??

I was reading a Danny Lennon blog piece and he said if you are supplementing with Vit D3 its important to make sure your also consuming sufficient levels of another vitamin that escapes me at the moment.

    Anybody know what that is?

Are you sure it wasn't calcium, a mineral?

What he said is that if you're taking a very high dosage of Vitamin D, you need to get more Vitamin A and K2 (which is related to calcium). And he also suggested upping the magnesium intake if you're getting a lot of D on board.

100g of pickled herring contains 680IU of vitamin d or 170% DV.

However I don't eat it every day, far from it. Will look into a balanced supplement.

100g of vitamin D3 tablets would give quite a lot too!
