    That's my feedback.

I agree with Ads by Google.

If images were allowed in After Hours it'd be a nightmare to read. Pages and pages of lolcats.
Most other forums allow images though. I think AH is best kept clear of images for the sake of everyone's sanity and loading times.

Look at what even happened to the feedback forum when it allowed lolcats.

    After hours would be insane

What about a trial-run? I agree with Frada, it's not 2008 anymore. I think the novelty of image-based discussion is gone - posts can be moved to CVPL if necessary too.

The same excuse gets out everytime. It's a bit of a cop out.

Not being able to post pictures dosent mean someone can't troll and call the op gay.

Reading a wall of text can be a pain in the hole.

Do you want people to draw pictures illustrating their points rather than write them out?

Some of us only access AH (I am a MASSIVE lurker) on our phones. Images (and quoting images - a pet hate of mine) would be a nightmare!

    Yes. With ms point.

We used to do that for telling people about sexual experiences, once upon a time. A lovely thread it was!

Not allowing pics in AH makes total sense- it's just too big and busy to cope with pics and discussion & navigation would be challenging to say the least- cool vids and pics forum meets that need admirably.

We can't have images in AH. It'd be annoying. We already get people making comments to be funny (I'm one of them :o) but add in pictures and the first few pages are gonna turn into "who has the best picture for the OP".

And you can still link images so it's really not that bad. All it takes is an extra click of a mouse (or tap of a phone) to see it.

We don't want to be like everywhere else, but we certainly like to look like one another, right micky? Practically like family. One disturbing family.

As far as pics are concerned, I don't miss them in AH. I'm at an age where I'm comfortable expressing my thoughts with words sometimes.

If images were allowed it would be nothing but gifs which would kill browsing for many of us I suspect.

You can post images in a convoluted sort of way ever since embedding tweets was made possible.

I've seen a few images posted to AH in that way over the last while.

I don't think that would be technically possible. Would be great if we did a trial run in the entire forum for a week or so. Could tie it in with donations to SSF, rather than forum name changes.

You know for the tiny sum of less than 14c per day you can browse boards without banner ads, and support the site.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,889 ✭✭✭✭The Moldy Gowl

You tube videos are allowed. I could easily post a you tube video of something funny to belittle someone, but it's not done.

I would appreciate a good reaction photo or gif though.

Look at any popular Facebook photo or video and the comments are destroyed by the same images and memes every time without fail.

If you want to post an image, just use imgur links. It saves page loading time and the image is only one click away.

If you could have a system whereby only people with a number of posts in AH were allowed post images then I think it would hugely re-invigorate the place.

If anyone posted a picture slagging off another poster, than would be the same as abuse and Would be dealt with.

Images in AH would make it nigh on impossible to browse boards while at work.

AH is usually likened to a chat in the pub, a sort of hodge-podge of topics given an "everyman" level of treatment. a bit of banter with friends.

never have I seen a group of friends in a pub sit there with a stack of picture cards beside them so they can properly , and graphically, accentuate the conversation and thereby "enhance" the atmosphere...... I so want to do this next april fools, arrange a beer where we all turn up, mingle with the public and use picture cards to lolcat/meme-react to anything we overhear and then roll our eyes (or hold up a picture of this beloved character ) as the locals don't get our "enhanced reality" version of the pub :D

on a more serious note: look at AH. how many threads have over 1000 replies. Pick one thread. now what size would that thread be if 1/3 of the replies contained a 100k gif ? (and 100k is a small estimate for an image). Now, how many of you, without 4G, want that transfer on your phone plan? or at home if you have a data cap on your broadband plan?

On top of that, we know the reputation, mainly undeserved, AH gets. I say mainly because when some smartarse wants to showboat they tend to pick the largest audience and thats AH. Its bad enough with links but imagine the troll/pronbot/soapboxing image-spam magnet AH would be.

Maybe if it were controlled. as suggested, no images until X post count or Y account age, or some combination of the two. No images over a certain size. Thats enforcable programatically. But its the mods who will have to judge the content and context and AH is already a fairly high workload with a high rate of decent-grounded-mod to quivering-pile-of-flaccid-flesh processing.

Then we have server bandwidth to consider. yeah, I know, we have pictures elsewhere but I'd like to see traffic stats comparing visits/average data footprint between cool pics and AH , and then applying the average cool pics data load to an average day of AH traffic and see what the expected bandwidth hit would be.

so, I wouldnt say "no. not gonna happen" but I would say "might not happen because we have all this extra stuff to consider"

<skipping all of the other comments>

In an Abe-Simpson-esque admission, I was the one who had images banned on After Hours. There's a large number of reasons. First and foremost was the day that I came in and logged in from work to have a look at After Hours and was greated by hundreds and hundreds and ultraporn images. And I genuinely feared for my job, considering that everything which is downloaded is logged. And without context of, "it was malicious", it would have looked in the logs like I just came into work and downloaded a few hundred MB of disturbing porn.

Secondarily, it was 2008, and communication purely through the medium of images was the new thing. Feedback was rife with it, and AH, being hundreds of times busier, was a bit of a nightmare.

But it's not 2008 any more. AH is a different beast, with a different crowd and more active mods. I see no reason why they can't be switched back on (pending mod agreement of course), with a few new rules slotted in about image size and content to weed out the asshats.

As much as I want to post all my reaction gifs and what not, there is people worse than me out there.
I don't want some bored gowl at home thinking it would be fun to post some porn gifs, if I'm at work. This could happen in any thread outside of after hours of course.

But a troll like that wouldn't make it to 50 posts. Could have a limit of 200 posts? Pictures would be nice, but I wouldn't be annoyed if it was left the way it is

Even on reddit, the original post can show a picture but the rest of the comments appear as imgur links which load if you hover over them

Why not have the option for the OP of a thread to select to enable images when they are creating a new thread?

Hah! I know what you mean. A lot can be said for a scaled down browser window full of text.

See that's what I dislike about it, Gowl/Seamus.
For obvious reasons (ie very popular) AH does seem to be a ground for trolls to go to. That's clearly not the fault of the forum or anything. So combine that with people getting to post everything from lolcats (for Guapo) to obviously more serious stuff like porn or gore and we're gonna have issue.

Still. maybe the first post could have images allowed with X amount of posts/registration time.

The other thing is people quote. And you know people quote images. Anyone who's been on a very active forum knows this. And then you'll have the people who think it's annoying. Who then quotes the person that posted ten images and adds in "don't do this. this is annoying". If done right it'll do nothing but enhance the forum (ideally) but if done wrong or not done strict enough you're gonna have trolls being trolls.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,925 ✭✭✭✭anncoates

Sometimes it would be great to be able to embed images in AH.

A well thought out and strategic image can be a brilliant riposte or point but the majority of images would invariably be the pictorial equivalent of rolleyes: a remedial discursive aid for fools.

Could adjust the reply script easily I'd imagine, to change image quotes back to links (which the poster could fix-up afterwards, if it makes sense to quote images); not a bad idea to do this for the whole forum, seeing as it is something people do a lot.

No opinion either way myself though, on allowing images.

There's a poster who often starts The Late Late Show/Saturday Night Show threads who would perfectly fit that description.

I like AH in its non picture format. If people think that's a reason why it's "a bit dead compared to the rest of the net" then that seems to be a good thing as people who are only interested in posting pointless pictures are going elsewhere.

Given AH traffic, I can't see how most threads won't descend into a "who can post the funniest or most insulting picture" without contributing anything original to the thread.

    Just my 2c

I'm old though so my opinion doesnt count anymore. Damn young people!
