(Always way better than the one in the TV forum)

Can't believe no one started on yet. For shame.

Everyone owes me a fiver each time one of these things happen
    • Billy Barry Kids
    • Frozen gets mentioned
    • Z List Celeb from the canteen
    • One for everyone in the audience (lucky pricks)
    • Token Black Kid
    • Double barrelled surname, usually a D4 kid
    • Microphone doesn’t work
    • Kid crashes bike/scooter
    • Dustin appears
    • Some woeful School Choir
    • The dreaded Book section

    Link to watch it online:
    http://www.rte.ie/player/ie/show/10348806/

Wish they'd bring back Pat Kenny...:pac:

Take a shot every time a kid rates something 10 out of 10.

I'm not trying to start a row here, but genuine question - how can we tell if it's just a black kid rather than a token black kid?

Hopefully Dustin and Socky make an appearance. It would be great to Snotser again also.

Honestly? It's made me doubt myself. As a child I hated them, but that felt normal. I was a child with an aversion to other children. But surely this neurosis shouldn't have carried through all the way to adulthood. Surely children are all that is good with the world? They represent the future, hope and innocence. Was it not Jesus himself who said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." But if my choice was between lifelong irritable bowel syndrome and a daily Billy Barry Kids performance I'd be stocking up on triple ply toilet paper.

I do believe you have stumbled on a great euphemism there.

Just not the same without PK. His general warm and easy-going nature around the kids really warmed the heart.

    • every time a toy doesn't work the way its supposed to.

    • every time a kid cries.

Gaybo was the best. His thinly veiled hatred of the brats on the show was a joy to behold.

Pat Kenny gave all the toys to the boys and not the girls :p

"alright lads would you like this toy? yeah? well there's one for you! and everyone in the audience!
now girls, would you love this doll? yeah? oh well too bad. now moving on..."

    Brilliant!
At least Gaybo though hated both genders equally.

Were they not replaced with the Adele King Stage School Kids?

Does Tubridy wear the shìte jumpers that Gay and Pat used wear?

€10 on Fiachra or Suibhneas dropping the F-bomb, I haven't watched the show in years but I'll watch it tonight for the laugh.

Billie Barry died two months ago, so I'd be very surprised if there wasn't some sort of tribute to her.

I'm guessing a chorus line of dead - eyed children, with fixed grins, belting out songs of from 'Annie'.

    Shudder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭podgemonster

They have definitely wound back on the Billy Barry's over the years. Gaybo was a big patronizing fan of them, they could feature several times in the same Toy Show.

Its seems that the foaming hatred that existed for these performing bright eyed doll children eventually filtered down to when Pat Kenny was at the helm.

They featured on and off during the decades but the Billy Barry founder died this year so I do expect a comeback and for them to close or open tonight's show.

Theres a 'Top 10 moments' on the RTE youtube page.
Separate vids for each clip like this one:

If there's only one black kid in the whole show then it's a token.

I had at least five twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings mention the LL Toy Show to me in work today.

I hadn't the heart to tell them I don't give a fúck. Sorry but why is this "a thing" now? When I was a kid my older siblings went to the pub and the kids watched the Toy Show. Even back then it was a bit lame. I don't think I watched it at all after the age of 14.

Supposed to be going out tonight, but I'm worried everyone is going to bail, in order to stay in and watch that insufferable bean pole shoving books in kids' faces like some dull, childless relative.

Fiver says some little crab says 'oh of course Ryan' or 'wait Ryan' whilst giving a science demo to chuckles from the audience.

It's okay not to "get it".

But by way of explanation, the fun is in the fact that late-night live TV and kids do not mix, and the show is genuinely dreaded by production people who are so used to co-ordinating everything into bland, spoon-fed nonsense.

We might have to pan a bit in the river, but there will always be at least a chance of a few golden TV nuggets.

For those of us with nostalgic memories, it's a heritage thing - a shared experience - and you kind of have to be there.

Let's hope it all goes haywire.

In fairness Gaybo only seemed to hate those kids who upstaged him.

Every other kid just got a variation on the patronising contempt he had for the rest of the country.

3 things I have learned from this thread thus far

    3) I have never watched the toy show in my life

I know someone was going to say that! In fairness Angeline Ball and Samantha Mumba are or were genuinely famous.

Bit of a tangent but is there some well-known, never-published story about what happened Samatha Mumba? She had genuine American billboard success, and then disappeared quicker than a line of coke on a Krystal toilet. Does anyone know what the hell actually happened there? She's like, our Malaysian Airlines.

Apparently it has a chitty chitty bang bang theme tonight but no child catcher as he might frighten young children, to be fair it already has a pretty sinister presenter so maybe RTE have a limit of one weirdo per show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,293 ✭✭✭✭Mint Sauce

Live TV, kids, and a slightly hyper presenter. What could possibly go wrong.

So this and a few tinnies and it may be bearable.
