Looking for a gym?

    Hey everyone,

I am looking for a gym around Dublin (preferably southside/town as I live in Terenure) that offers regular intense classes from experienced trainers for the next 2 months before I start my football season again.

I am in the Ben Dunne Carlisle but find the classes - and the gym - average at best for what I am trying to achieve personally.

I have heard great things about FFS on Leeson street but their membership quota is full. I am looking for a gym that puts similar emphasis on functional strength and conditioning.

Time of classes does not matter as my schedule is very flexible.

    Any advice is much appreciated.

Try SDSC (South Dublin Strength & Conditioning) in Harold's Cross.

Join crossfit , I'm in ronin crossfit fairview and the change in just a few months is unbelievable. It's very much functional strength.
There is a crossfit on sir John rogersons Quay Dublin 2 if you want something that side of town.

I've done trx and a few others and nothing comes close to crossfit.

What price is Crossfit for say, 3 months? How many sessions a week does that entail?

there's a crossfit in the Kimmage industrial estate just behind Ravensdale Park, or Yourfitness Gym in Harrols Cross.

I'm actually quitting Carlisle too, haven't decided yet which of the two I'll go for

Yeah, Carlisle's not great. I want to go somewhere with intense training and good trainers until our team start back. What you leaning towards?

I'm 90% sure on your fitness gym. I'd love to do crossfit, but its a little expensive if I had the spare cash I'd defo be doing crossfit because there's part of me that would love to compete. I'm hoping to change jobs in 2015 so if I go up in salary I'll be one of those crossfit w**kers!

I looked up some of the prices on the places mentioned here. JESUS!!!! Who has that kind of money to splash around? Crossfit sounds very good but very pricey. Is there any cheaper versions than the one's listed here? I play team sports and I wouldn't be much good on my own, so doing gym work as part of a team would suit.

My plan is to try and do the high intensity classes in the gym and do lifting, maybe with a coach, until someday I can magically afford crossfit!

I think I'll be joining the gym in Harolds Cross too!

Thanks for all your advice guys.

I found it funny how some people see a gym membership as expensive, but have no problem spending €10 a day on cigarettes or €50 on a weekly night out. OP maybe consider the DCC gym in Rathmines. I think have pay as you go if you just want to see whether you would use the gym regularly or not. Most people use a gym membership a few weeks and stop going.

Dunno about anybody else, but I don't try to cut corners with my health and fitness any more. I joined a Ben Dunne's and never saw a PT and I view that as a year's worth of time and effort wasted. I changed to a more expensive gym and got proper PT advice and regret not doing so much sooner.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Yeah but we're talking thousands of euro here, thousands! It's madness, why are they so expensive?

    +1 for SDSC

If you want cheap, join a commercial gym.

You don't buy a fiesta and moan that it doesn't perform like a Ferrari.

Ok but what exactly are you paying for? We know what we'll get buying a ferrari, what does spending thousands on a gym get you?

90% of people end the month with an empty bank account anyway in my experience. May as well empty it into their health and fitness than into a pubs till.

Ach, that may be true but I'm sure there must be people willing to work for cheaper. I know people will say you pay for what you get but it really is crazy money.

Price is what you pay, value is what you get.

Plenty of professions charge a lot more when you break it down.

What value do you put in what you want out of it?

In any case, if you wanted you could join a gym that suited and paid for sessions with someone who knows what's what and can get you where you want to go. If you can also put in the work yourself outside of the sessions.

I'm not being smart and I don't need an answer or anything. It's just one you need to know yourself.

What does it mean to you and what value is that?

You might not want to invest much if you only want something to keep you going until you start back training.

Of you might think training isn't enough to get you where you want to be.

No one knows but you. But just don't compare proper training to a membership in a cheap, chain gym. There is no comparison.

Whether or not the difference is worth it is up to you but just be aware that there is a massive difference.

I value my health and well-being.

Therefore, I'm willing to pay to use a facility with good coaching that will push me on.
think of it as an investment in yourself.
its a brilliant way to get started on the path to health and fitness

Crunch on Aston Quay are good. Their classes are mostly based around circuits and plyometrics, high impact stuff.

For anyone in the SDSC can I Just ask what the difference between the personal training and the standard coaching packages are?

It reads to me that all their packages include a coach?

Personal training is mostly likely... more personal.

Typically in that set up you have small groups training together with a coach. So while it remains personal, it's not one to one.

    I agree too

fools and their money springs to mind.

Also how come everyone relies on PTs these days? Are people that clueless and unmotivated to be able to workout themselves?

Let's say people ARE clueless and unmotivated, would you rather they:

    - pay ~€200 a year so that they aren't spending much money on a gym (they never go though and remain miserable about their health and fitness);
    - pay ~€200 a month so that they start making forward progress and turn their health and fitness around;

    ?

I'm plenty motivated to work out on my own but paying a pt who knows what he's at - the progress I've made i wouldn't have made on my own is more than worth it. And fun

Imagine, i pay for singing lessons too :pac:

would you pay for golf lessons? swimming lessons? driving lessons?
    its all relative

Why is it foolish to invest money in yourself? Who says people employing PTs are clueless or unmotivated? You can teach yourself to drive but hiring an instructor for lessons gets you there faster with fewer bad habits. You can teach yourself French but taking a class will give you a better grasp of the nuances of the language. Shit, eating in McDonalds gets you the same basic result of filling your belly as cooking a healthy meal but we all know which one is better for you. If people want to train on their own or train with a PT, more power to them. Either way, good luck. Having done it both ways (and the way of semi-personal training, a la places like SDSC, RevFit, Crossfit etc), I know which one gets better results for me. Cost to value is the key and it's a no brainer. Of course, by your logic, hiring a driving instructor or a French teacher makes you foolish, clueless and unmotivated to learn yourself.

What do you get when buying a Ferrari? Something that looks better, performs better and breaks less. Sounds about right.

You can find any quality training program you want online these days. For whatever your goal is. The PT might help with form at the start and getting all the basics right, so I can see how paying for one then can be justified but that should only be for a few months at most. After that people should be fine on their own, they're not professional sport people that require specific weight training.

ive never once used a pt, ive trained from the very start. Before the recession and the fad of pts for everyone came about people in the gym were happy to encourage and pass on their help without having to pay.

For every 1 decent PT there are about 20 utter clowns rolling of the conveyor belt these days. There seems to be more PTS walking about than any other type of job

There's no shortage of them that's for sure. I suppose with the prices they can charge there's no surprise there. Personally I saved up to get a home gym so I don't have to pay anyone membership or other fees. It's not state of the art but if I had 2,400 euro to splash about I'd get a decent set up going.

ask people if money were no object what would be the two fitness related things they would love to have -

    1. A full time trainer for all training sessions - even a full time training partner thats in the shape you want to be in, guiding you through every session and programming accordingly.

    2. A full time chef to prepare perfect meals to keep the nutrition on track.

yes many people can and do use trainers once, a few times and go their own way, once every 6 weeks and ive clients i see up to 4 times a week.

Just depends on what you value and how much you get from the sessions.

Very near the walkinstown roundabout, turn off at Chadwicks on the greenhills road.
