I emptied the bank account in June 2002 to back Lennox Lewis against Mike Tyson. Got a bit of 4/6 (from the long-gone and much-lamented Pat O'Brien on Victoria Road) but the rest went on at 8/13 and 4/7. I even put the last few quid in my pocket on @ 8/15 on the day of the fight!

Even though I had about €3K invested, I wasn't that nervous watching the fight that night - it never really occurred to me that Tyson could win. Have never put more than €350 on any bet before or since. Won about €1900 on the bet.

Not doubting you or anything but VERY unusual for a bookie to take a bet on the first race (or any race, for that matter) that would require him to leave the track if it clicked. Be hard to get €100 (not to mind "a mountain") on a 10/1 shot with all but a couple of the bookies doing the rounds these days!

    In 2014 alone:

Tyson Fury v Derek Chisora 2,463

Carl Fogarty to win I'm A Celebrity 1,758

Ben Haenow to win X-Factor 1,930

I currently have 2,500 on Mrs Brown's Boys to win Top Christmas Day TV at odds of 1/1 (2.0)

So that will be my single biggest win of this year, 2,500 net profit.

My biggest all time win was 3,000 when bet on Hurt Locker winning Best Picture at the Oscars. Avatar was the favourite, but I backed Hurt Locker 3,000 at odds of 1/1 (2.0)

I figured the aged profile of the Oscars judging panel would favour an American war film over computer animation. And so they did.

Sometimes one has to trust ones gut instinct, despite it going against the odds on favourites. The market doesn't always know, and favourites don't always win. Often my biggest wins were backing the second favourite.

them odds don't add up, if u have 2,500 on brendan at 2/1, that will be 5k profit and u would have won 6 grand on hurt locker, if u put 3 grand on at 2/1, not the 3 grand u claim to have won, this sounds all a bit too fishy

I got lucky with Lucas Glover winning the US open a few years back.

He was tipped on Newstalk.... 10Eur e/w @ 175/1.. And he won. :)

    Apologies for the error.
I am used to using decimal odds not fractions you see, so I mean 2.0 (1/1) not 2/1.
I have corrected it now, thanks for pointing out my mistake.

    €1835 on a €1 yankee.

Four first goalscorers, Shearer, Owen, Van Nistleroy and Davies of Bolton. Picked the first three because they were regular scorers and penalty takers. Don't know why I picked Davies.

A week later I had three up and my fourth scored the second goal.

Won 1300 on Denmark winning the eurovision in 2013.

lost a few pound a few seasons back, backed on the tuesday night Valencia to beat Porto and the went up 1-0 and end up drawing 1-1!
so with the annoyance of that the next day ladbrokes were giving a special on arsenal to beat Barcelona at home at 3/1, i remember it was 11/4 in PPs! ran down and put a 1,000 euro on it (mostly on rage from night before) arsenal was down 1-0 and came back and won 2-1 with 2 goals in the 2nd half! think arshavin scored the winner! so 4,000 was mine!

Won 3,500 on Trap becoming the next Ireland manager after I'd layed loads of short priced favourites and then gotten lucky as someone game me the word when Trap was still a 3 figure price on betfair.

Most I ever won on a horse was Ruby riding a little-known horse called American Trilogy at Cheltenham a good few years back, won a grand on him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 812 ✭✭✭clickerquicklic

Probably better to ask " Biggest priced winner" as someone could have thousands on an odds on shot , more skill/luck/amazement in them huge odds winners. Biggest win I remember off the top of my head is 1500 ew on a horse at 14/1 i think it was noble somthing, that was this year and it won , biggest price winner i remember backing is only about 120/1 which considering the amount of bets i place is probably not amazing.
