    Credit were it's due.

Used the new flyover at Newlands cross this morning for the very first time.

Left Kildare (North of Naas) at 0800, arrived at Blanchardstown (NAC) at 0822.

    Credit were it's due tbh.

    Well done to all involved.

They've just announced on the News that it is now possible to drive from Cork to Belfast without stopping at a traffic light.

It reminds me strangely of an ancient quotation that before the cutting down of our forests, a squirrel could go from Mizen Head in W. Cork to Malin Head in N. Donegal, without touching the ground.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to line the edges of the motorway with a double line of trees? The Squirrel's Way!

Meanwhile the M50 becomes more and more choked, and we are pandering to these culchies?

    Ridiculous.

The difference being that the M50 is choked at times.

Newlands cross was choked all of the time.

I know there is one proposed from the N7 to the N2 passing through Kilcock or Enfield at about 20 miles out from Dublin city centre. This should take any intercity South North of the island traffic out of the greater Dublin urban area if it is not needed there.

This will just push the traffic back to the long mile junction, sure even the red cow roundabout isn't free flow after all the millions spent.

Just do it all right from the start please.

It would be an excellent idea :) But I'd make it a triple line of trees to stop the strobe effect that you get when the sun shines through the branches

Most of the traffic heads to the M50 from the N7 anyway so doubt this will be much of an issue

more people with jobs means more people driving on the M50 who went nowhere near it before, and don't have a clue how to drive on it, which means more crashes.

The number of crashes has gone up, but I'd say the absolute % of crashes to volume has stayed the same.

    LOL

it would be cheaper and quicker to enforce the Keep Left unless overtaking rule. Could be done today. Setup a video camera and anyone in the overtaking lanes not actively overtaking gets the book thrown at them , obstruction , driving with due care and attention. And pull them in at the next checkpoint for tax , insurance, nct just to hammer home the point. (automatic number plate recognition / broken window theory)

On most of our existing 3 lane roads the left lane is practically empty unless there is an exit ahead or the traffic is very heavy.
The M50 is bad enough but when you head onto the M4 or M7 off peak it's obscene to think of how many hundreds of millions was spent on what is more or less an extra wide hard shoulder because people are breaking the rules of the road by driving in the middle lane , and probably 10Km/hr under the speed limit

I'm totally with you on that

I dont think they do it for laughs. I reckon they see the left lane as a 'slow' lane for slow drivers and they dont belive they should drive in that lane as they are 'normal' drivers.
We need some serious re-education of a lot of drivers on our roads. And some proper enforcement.

A lot of the traffic does be heading into the city centre.

So it will be quicker getting through new lands cross only to hit the lights at the long mile junction, it's terrible as it is, they should open the bus lane to everyone to help at least.

The middle lane is the 'easy' lane. You don't need to worry about merging traffic or changing lanes. You can just switch your brain off and cruise.

Have the got rid of the traffic lights in Dunnmanway?

Drove from Carlow to Slane last night via the M50/Newlands Cross.

The amount of f***ing morans ambling along at 50 in the overtaking lane is unbelievable. Worse though are the idiots who brake at everything and cause a concertina effect.

It took 2.5 hours to drive home last night and another 2 1/4 this morning to do the reverse journey.

    I seriously need to move!

N81 from Tullow up to Blessington, through Citywest up to Newlands Cross, then to Slane via the N2?

Personally I'd go out of my way to take the M9 to Dublin and go to Slane via the M1

Meanwhile the M50 becomes more and more choked, and we are pandering to these culchies?

    Ridiculous.

One of the big things choking the M50 was the N7 exit. It's still gonna be choked at that point in the mornings because of the junctions at kylemore but even that should be a bit lighter because newlands cross outbounds most mornings was previously contributing to it.

I went through it heading northbound on the M50 this morning at about 9 and it was great. Took less than 10 minutes to get from Citywest to the M50 where it usually takes at least 20 minutes and often over half an hour.

The traffic on the M50 itself was the same as always, from the N7 exit up to the M1 anyway. It's possible it could be lighter on a morning thats not foggy due to the traffic being more evenly distributed but we'll have to wait for a few days with good weather to know for sure. At worst it stays the same tho so no idea what you are getting at with the "more choked" and "pandering to cluchies" bit.

It should have a significant effect on evening traffic for most of the M50, but won't know for sure if this is the case till we see it in action a few times.

No I took the M9, M50, N2. I mistakenly thought the flyover was open yesterday. Usually I'd go through Maynooth, Straffan and Dunboyne.

Traffic is definitely increasing on all roads though.

I've tried going to Maynooth to avoid Newlands Cross a few times and I never thought it was worth it. Seemed to always end up behind some slow goon with no way to overtake.

    Went over it this morning.

Didn't take too much time off my travel in though, I saw people posting on Facebook that it took 20 minutes off there travel in, but I found traffic was even heavier this morning. With the fog there wasn't much of a view, even from my seat on the top row of a double decker bus!

In fairness if you're in a bus you've the benefit of the bus lanes so you wouldn't be stuck in as much traffic as a car/truck commuter.

The real benefit would be on the way out of Dublin, I will be interested to see how I fare this evening. Took 45 minutes last night from Woodies on the Naas Road to the Newlands lights last night

Bus lanes are shut after about 300 metres so there's no benefit at the moment, drivers can't even use them because they can't get out of them as traffic is backed up.

That's the problem with the M50. People, like me, who have no interest in going near Dublin, get caught up in the traffic which is heading into town and along various exits.

An outer orbital road for traffic coming from the south and going north (beyond the airport) would get rid of a lot of congestion.

I could easily be wrong but I can't imagine that scale of project would be worth it. What percentage of drivers on the M50 at rush hour are coming from outside the M50 and going to somewhere outside the M50. It would need to be a very significant percentage to justify how much a project of that scale would cost.

    LOL

the M50 was supposed to bypass Dublin or that's that they told the EU when they got the money originally

Of course it was to be used primordially for Dublin commuters , there is no other way to explain why it has so many junctions. If it was a proper motorway rather than a ring-road rights it should only have 5 junctions M1, N2/N3 , N4 , N7 , N11

BTW don't NTR still own the contract for any link road between N3 and N4 - so don't hold your breath.

Some stupid fcukin pox was parked in the driving lane on the flyover this evening on the way out of Dublin at about 7.20. Millions spent on a state of the art engineering project and some fycktard nearly gets me killed by abandoning his car on it and leaving it lying in the driving lane.

With travellers due to be granted ethnic minority status in the near future I'd say it's only a matter of time before Pavee Point demand that all new roads have a dedicated lane in which to race their ponies.

We need more fast lanes, that's what we pay road tax for.
