Slow drivers don't like being overtook?

This is one thing i can't understand, Was coming home from new ross tonight heading towards waterford, Which is a 60mph road, So i end up getting stuck behind a slow driver who was doing 40mph in a 60, So i waited a mile or two patiently to overtake in a safe manner, Anyway as i overtake and pull back in they put their full lights and started flashing me 2 or 3 times and stopped but kept their full lights on, Now can somebody explain this to me why people like that person do this?

    It's called 'undiagnosed depression'.:D

Seriously if you did that to me, because I was day-dreaming or just chillin , I would pull in as far to the left as I could, and just think to myself 'I wouldn't fcukin blame him'.....

And for all you other 'undiagnosed depressive posters'.... Day dreaming with due care and attention.
Chillin with due care and attention.

Impossible, this doesn't happen on Irish roads.

This drives me up the feckin wall. They do it on motorways too. And at night when they come against you and flash u for full lights and u flash them back to show the dims are on but as soon as they reach your bonnet they put there fulls on. Just as well I keep my hand on the full lights toggle being prepared. Seriously one these days I will end up doing an illegal u turn and chase them down in pure rd rage. That or become a garda and write them a ticket for even sneezing funny.

They are saluting your superior horsepower and/or the fact that you have something more important to be doing than dawdling.

The drivers of German cars on the cork/limerick border are particularly appreciative of someone with better places to be.

What annoys me is the drivers that have their lights so badly adjusted that they blind you even when they are on dims.;)

I was actually going to start a thread similar to this last night.

I overtook a car (safely) going about half the speed limit for the given road to which I received many flashes. My passenger happened to look over and see your man having a grand chat on the phone.

Where do these people think they get the right to start giving out to me by overtaking and avoiding their incompetent driving because they are doing something illegal - being on the phone?

Just to balance this, if the OP was right up the slow driver's ass for a while before the overtake....then that could explain a blast of full beams after.

Edit, I note the word 'patiently' used in OP.

Maybe you cut in front of them. The amount of drivers on motorways that have plenty room to over take only to cut in front of the car they are overtaking beggars belief.

Regularly happens on Irish Roads, on Motorways too.
    Overtake someone doing 100km/h

Overtakes you and slows down to 100 again

    Repeat 2 more times.

Then I eventually get sick of it and go faster than he/she is willing to go until he/she is out of sight, while dipping the mirror to avoid being dazzled by their flashing high beams.

On single carriage ways people seem more inclined to accelerate to stop you overtaking them, hence I'll give myself loads of space between myself and the car in front so my speed is much higher than theirs and they have less possibility of being able to increase their speed to stop me from overtaking.

I had a flute try and do this recently to me.
I was driving the OH Grande Punto but it's not the typical 1.2 but the 1.9 version. On the M4 and this gimp I was passing decided to accelerate.
At this point we are side by side doing 130ish so I back off and pull in behind him.
What does he do? Slows down to around 110. I'm getting pi33ed off at this point to say the least and went for the 2nd attempt and this time when he started matching my speed I kicked it down to 4th and fcuked him out of way.
Didn't expect a Punto to leave him for ****e.

I ****ing hate that. Some twat's going to cause an accident doing that one of these days. It's a lethal thing to do. Especially when they try and match your speed so you can't even get back in to the right side of the road.

Overtaking anything in Ireland is a gamble, unless you have at least twice the horsepower of the dawdler and a willingness to boot it past them.

Slow drivers simply do not care about being overtaken.

What annoys slow drivers are the people who tailgate them beforehand while blinding them with their improperly adjusted headlights. Those are the people who get the headlight treatment once they finally go past.

My guess would be the OP should check his lights.

    Nope.

My lights are adjusted fairly low right right now. 2 out of 2 times leaving Charleville in North Cork I've been flashed. I wasn't tailgating, just up to speed and gone while they were thinking about it.

Just the impotent rage of a dawdler denied the chance to begin a 2 mile convoy on the N20...

You don't need lots of horse power .. you just need lots of space to accelerate up to a decent speed.

Sitting 10 meters behind the car in front means they can increase their speed at around the same time as your speed

If you have 150-200 meters between the car and you in front you have plenty of time to have the bigger differential between your speed and their speed.

Even 1 liter Polos will do 160km/h :P

Sitting 10 meters behind the car in front means they can increase their speed at around the same time as your speed you can gun your Stage-2 EXUP and howl past the tool on one wheel.

If you have 150-200 meters between the car and you in front you have plenty of time to have the bigger differential between your speed and their speed, so the overtakee doesn't even see you.

Had one last week although not on the motorway. Some guy in a big jeep rolls up to a red light in the right hand lane ,I am about 20 mtrs behind him in the left, the light turns green just as he is about to stop but I see this and as I have the momentum I keep driving at my normal speed and pass him on his left. Both lanes are for going straight so I done nothing wrong.

Then I get the flashes and beeps all the way up the road for a few minutes, I stop at the next lights and now he has his fist out the window shaking it furiously at me! I am a passive kind of a bloke who would much rather avoid any conflict but this pissed me right off so I opened the door and decided to see what this idiots problem was...as I start to walk towards his jeep the fcuker pulls off, breaking a red light in the process and speeds up the road as fast as he can go! Some right Bloody idiots out there !

And a right mess i the swine decides to brake when you're rushing up behind him..

Instead of dropping three gears, taking a look for Stage 2 EXUP's coming up from behind on one wheel, then putting the foot to the floor until it beeps.

It's ****ing safer, for a start.

On the other hand, overtaking anything doing more than 80kph in a diesel Megane involves maneuvers planned using Geological timescales. 90bhp does not a car move.

If that was foot-to-the-floor the whole way, I'd well believe it. I've seen the same thing with other cars. Once they go above 100kph they just start guzzling it because you're either holding it wide open, or have the turbo constantly on boost just to hold the speed.

Can somebody tell me if I was in the right or wrong here? I'll describe it warts and all.

I was heading southbound on the M1 just passing the Airport exit. I was in lane two doing 60 and there was a car in lane one doing about 50. There was then a Merc ahead of me in lane 3 who on passing the exit for the Airport, slowed down to under 50 (I think there's a speed limit sign there for 50) and turned into lane two right in front of me - he was getting into position to exit for the M50 which is the exit almost immediately after the airport exit. The road becomes 5 lanes at this point.

I kept going forward at the same speed because I didn't know why he'd slow down and cut in front of me like that. He was making moves to exit the M1 very late in the day considering he was still in lane 3 at the time. Anyway, I kept going and went up close behind him just to let him know that he'd cut in front of me at a slower speed (no beeps of the horn or flashing of lights, just kept going until I got up close to him and then backed off). He then brake-checked me and moved over into the exit lane for the M50. When I got up beside him he was roaring and shouting and giving me the wa*ker sign.

So, was he right to slow down the way he did and cut across because I'm almost certain there's a reduction to 50 mph there? And should I have hit my breaks and not gone near him?

I know driving up close behind someone is not advisable but I didn't get right onto his bumper or anything, just close enough for him to know that he pulled in and slowed down in front of a faster moving vehicle.

I could've been totally in the wrong here so I'd like to find out.

    (All speeds are in mph)

it is lanes 1/2/3, and the 'middle' is also an overtaking lane - what would you call them on a 4 lane motorway??

The one he's talking about is 3 lanes though isn't it.

Not sure TBH on a 4 lane one - is lane 1 the left most lane and 4 the one furthest to the right?

OP still a sh!t driver BTW

indeed, and correct to call the lanes 1,2,3 - on a four lane it would be 1,2,3,4, lane 1 being the leftmost, simples ;)

Just something to consider when passing a (large) vehicle at speed on the left.

it is reasonable for a vehicle to slow down to speed limit, it is not reasonable to cut in. It is not reasonable for you to speed in a middle lane, causing people in the outside to lane to have to speed or cut in.
