Had to think about where i should of posted this here or feedback went for here seeing as its a thread about here!

Anyway ive seen a lot of different kinds of posts complaining about AH lately.

Weather its the content or the fact its gone boring or whatever there seems to be issues coming from all kinds of areas.

I know its hard these days but it be nice if we could all some how just talk about this without it turning into the usual ****e fest.

For me personally this is one the main issues i have with AH lately nearly every thread turns into an argument no matter where it started or how innocent the original topic was.

What does everyone else think anyway?
How do you feel about this place currently?

Question: is it fair to say the sample active population of boards.ie has exponentially grown in recent years or would you say it's remained constant? (This is important to gauge the current 'quality' of AH - or at least how one poster perceives the utility factor of this forum in relation to how that poster might have done so a few years ago.)

    Strongly ambivalent.

No, no, no. I'd like to change my answer please.

    Fiercely ambivalent.

I think the topics have gone downhill if I'm being honest. It could be just me but I think the place used to be much more entertaining.

I notice the same thing your not the only one.

I guess theres going to be all kinds of different views on this whole subject but im curious as to how people feel seeing as there seems to be a lot of things been said about the goings on in here lately.

Too much tolerance of obvious trolls and some over zealous mods. Apart from that it's business as usual.

So the mods aren't zealous enough then?

I know the thread your on about i just taught this could be towards the posters of AH and be a lot more open to different issues maybe and not just what the OP of that thread brought up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,530 ✭✭✭Duck's hoop

There's a couple of posters who really, seriously, massively just drag the arse out of whatever particular threads they get involved with.

And the usual first page of incredibly cringey 'smart' replies is pretty off putting as well. Toe curling in both instances.

Why not put this in feedback instead of basically looking for another cryfest for the mods to deal with?

    'Erra 'tis grand like.
Some threads are great, others are shíte.
Some posts are great, others are shíte.
Some posters are witty and insightful, some are ignorant and some are just downright nasty.
Same as any popular online forum, really.

I don't think AH has taken any major noticeable nosedive recently. Not that I've seen anyway.

I was going to but i just taught if its in here more might see it and it can be more open to all kinds of discussion.

It doesn't all have to be bad ya know ? Id imagine there's plenty of good things about this place as well ? I didn't make this thread to be about the bad things in AH its more how do people actually feel about here that can be anything good or bad. I addressed bad things in my original post but that was just an example of my own views i dont speak for everyone :pac:.

It's the same as it ever was, the actors might change but the roles are still the same.

Threads come in and out of fashion and have probably been done before.
Thanks whores scramble for the first response.
Certain posters aren't as funny as they think.
One sh*t gimmick account replaces another.

    Maybe you've changed too OP.

It's not the same beast it was a few years ago.... Used to be funny but with some great serious threads and good conversation.
There's still the odd good thread from time to time, but the quality isn't what it was.

It'd make you laugh, people asking for threads to be locked. Don't read the ****ing thing then, it's easier.

Bit flat lately, perhaps theres an air of intimidation which stops people from posting up their ridiculous yet funny threads so that we can laugh at and humiliate them.

    Just can't tell why.

IMHO the quality has gone up. Go back 5 6 years and have a look. The vast majority of topics were two or three word titles and there was a lot more "filler". It was more jokey mind you, but that's down to its original purpose. Now it's the portal for the site and many don't want to go into more specialised forums.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

The problem isn't over-zealous moderation, it's weak moderation.

I think it's more that certain posters will whinge and the mods will have to step in and impose whatever sanction they deem suitable, there's no sense of "fun" anymore, your posts and opinions are heavily scrutinised even if they are clearly just a joke.

Yid be afraid of your ****e to post in AH these days. Too many smart asses imho and it doesn't suit them.

That is part of it. Some comments are taken down or carded and its hard to see why and then other more serious comments are allowed to stay. Its hard to see the consistency. I appreciate that with a lot of different mods you'll get a degree of that, one person might remove a comment another would allow to stand for example but the really obvious trolls ruin AH. I often wonder how much of it is staged tbh to liven up an otherwise very boring forum.

...and when a debate gets a bit heated, there seems (to me) that there are 2 or 3 posters who are allowed to say what they like, and insult other posters, without any fear of being sanctioned.

yet there is the charter which is supposed to apply to us all?

perhaps a refresher course for moderators might make AH a better place?

Turtyturd is pretty much spot on.
It's the same idea pretty much: serious threads, not so serious threads. Posters being dicks or being nice. All that changes is what account is being/being a dick over time.

But it has gotten more serious. Not that it's a bad thing. I think with the site getting more members and whatnot, other forums are created.

It could be worse, we could all be flirting.

People just love taking the mick (I would call it something else!) out of every topic of conversation/thread posted - it definitely puts me off even putting my opinion on a thread sometimes because some people just cant handle a adult conversation - so they put the most immature remarks for reaction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,689 ✭✭✭Tombi!

You can still give your opinion. Some people do just argue for the sake of it. But I mean you learn to spot the ones that are annoying fairly easily.
Just either put them on ignore or else just don't respond to them; you'll usually spot people you like/dislike over a few months of posting in the same type of threads.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 687 ✭✭✭Dayum

I think boards.ie is in need of an un-moderated sub-forum.

The mods can be a bit overkill at times. Troll trolling trolls can be a great bit of craic altogether....as long as it doesn't become gross or the chonz level of sick, we should really have one.

People are too sensitive now. I remember when mods from other forums would say "this isn't after hours" whenever some witty (possibly risque) humour was used. They don't say that anymore and there's a reason for that. Leeches have sucked the fun out of After Hours by being offended at everything, and when they're not offended they are getting offended on the behalf of others.

It's a great shame, but nothing lasts forever.

The level of modding is far too heavy handed...it's not only suffocating all the fun out of After Hours but it's also stifling debate at this point. I can understand how other forums on this site might be in need of modding because of the subject or because they want to keep it informative but AH should be relaxed a bit....

Just saying something as ridiculous as "It's raining outside and the roads are slippy.....careful ladies"....results in infractions galore...

    Pitiful stuff really.

After Hours has lost its identity, sense of humour and most importantly its ability to not be offended by every little fiddle faddle.

It's bogged down and has the life and laughs sucked out of it by circular arguments and petty point scoring and nit-picking, and then there are the soapboxers and the endlessly repetitive posters, whose posts you don't even have to read any more since they're all variations on a theme. Round and round and round it goes, endlessly tedious and predictable. Particularly so in the threads just started to get some vitriol going.

When it's at it's best it's hilarious and cheers me up, and can really bring home how funny and tolerant and insightful the average Irish person is.

I'd like more of that please.
