Was playing a video game called The Wolf Among Us and it had a character called Colin which was a Pig but could talk like a person. It got me thinking if all animals talked like that you'd need to be a mean b@stard to actually kill them.

So if our Cows, Sheep, pigs, chickens etc ever learn how to talk would you stop eating meat? Would you support them being killed in their millions when they could express their feelings to us in a way we would understand?

Would you kill/eat animals that talk like humans? 36 votes

What if the talking animals spoke like the talking pig in the Simpsons?

I find it hard enough to watch our cattle being loaded up for the factory. If they started talking to me I don't think I'd have the heart to send them off.

what if when they spoke they only had evil fascist hateful things to say but still tasted and smelled of wonderful bacon ?

I wouldn't eat anything that could talk... and if one member of a species could talk I wouldn't eat any of that species...
It would have to be a reasonable amount of communication, so Koko the gorilla, with the sign language is enough to stop me eating gorillas... and most of the great apes are probably on a similar level.
Squid and Octopus are quite smart so I won't eat them...
Dolphins seem pretty smart, so they're off the table.
Crows, jackdaws, parrots are shockingly smart, so they're safe but chickens seem thick as **** so eat away.
Cows and pigs? Hmmm I'm told pigs are smart, and cows have best friends, but that's not enough for me... as long as they have happy safe llives, I'm ok with eating them.

It's a complex mix of things.

IF one of them spoke, the whole species would be off my plate.

it's f'ducking scary man that all you need to do is give the things a personality and it's like eating your brother.

This is the pig i'm talking about. Honestly how the fcuk could you kill something like that. Animal rights groups would have a field day.

Depends if it had anything worth saying. If it was talking absolute ****e or making vacous comments I'd have no problems divulging it.

yeah but would you approve of them going off to the slaughter just to be put back on your plate. They'd be begging them to let em live as well.

EDIT: Would you eat a human if it was talking ****e too?

Definitely would not! but this thread is flawed because we wouldn't even be considering animals as food if they could hold intelligent conversations or had a more intellectually audible means of communication. If they could speak to us we definitely wouldn't have got to the stage of eating them.

Try having that conversation on an Island inhabited by cannibals.

i'm saying what if they suddenly developed it. what would we eat instead?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,616 ✭✭✭masculinist

well... some humans cant speak and are less intelligent than a pig because of genetic disorders or accidents yet we don't think it is right to eat them. If you become brain damaged can we then eat you because you ''wont mind'' ? So whats the foremost criteria for not eating someone ? Species-ism ?

I agree with this post 'sort of'.... Whatever way you look at it! the animals where still put on earth by God as food for humans.... So although you might think you wouldn't eat them because they can speak, I feel the only difference would be, that they would be able to say a wee prayer or speak to theirre families and say there good-byes, just before we have them for dinner :D

Most people wouldn't because we find it inconceivable to eat some animals and not others already based on how humans relate to them - i.e. most Western people would be horrified by the idea of slaughtering dogs for meat, but slaughtering pigs is ok.

All animals talk or communicate. We just don't understand them or appreciate that their reasons for communicating are different from ours
