There is another thread on the recent comet landing by the ESA, but this deserved another thread for its sheer bat**** puritanical fundamentalism, yes boards its another discussion on this, I know, but bear with me...

They couldn't take it in good cheer and fun/humour, once again showing the awful PC culture of the USA being dripped to the rest of the world.

Yesterday the European Space Agency landed the Philae spacecraft on a comet, a powerful step forward for humanity and science alike. However, slightly before the big moment, coverage of the event reminded us how much progress remains to be accomplished back on Earth.

A number of the scientists involved on this incredible project were interviewed in the hours leading to contact by Nature Newsteam. One of those Rosetta scientists was Matt Taylor, who chose to dress, for this special occasion, in a bowling shirt covered in scantly clad caricatures of sexy women in provocative poses.

"This is going to be a very long day but a very exciting day," said Taylor. "I think everyone should enjoy it because we're making history."

No one knows why Taylor chose to wear that shirt on television during a massive scientific mission. From what we can tell, a woman who goes by the name of Elly Prizeman on Twitter made the shirt for him, and is just as bewildered as he must be that anyone might be upset about her creation. But none of that actually matters. What matters is the fact that no one at ESA saw fit to stop him from representing the Space community with clothing that demeans 50 percent of the world's population. No one asked him to take it off, because presumably they didn't think about it. It wasn't worth worrying about.

This is the sort of casual misogyny that stops women from entering certain scientific fields. They see a guy like that on TV and they don't feel welcome. They see a poster of greased up women in a colleague's office and they know they aren't respected. They hear comments about "bitches" while out at a bar with fellow science students, and they decide to change majors. And those are the women who actually make it that far.

Those are the few who persevered even when they were discouraged from pursuing degrees in physics, chemistry, and math throughout high school. These are the women who forged on despite the fact that they were told by elementary school classmates and the media at large that girls who like science are nerdy and unattractive.

This is the climate women who dream of working at NASA or the ESA come up against, every single day. This shirt is representative of all of that, whether Taylor meant it to be or not.

Do you think we have reached a point where even if you contribute to humanity in big ways like this guy, a twitter mob of SJW with no filter and a lot of wi-fi can actually destroy your legacy?

Edit: I just watched a Ph.D in physics that advanced humanity, break down and cry because a poetry degree didn't like his shirt.

The notion that females are so weak minded, sensitive and pathetic that they could be driven away from science because of a freaking t-shirt is so sexist and offensive itself I cant even begin to explain.

If a t-shirt is what drives you away, they likely never had the mental fortitude common sense/intelligence to handle a career in STEM anyway.

I told the person next to me in the office about what was happening and she couldn't give a rats arse, but she finds the time to keep me constantly updated on whatever showbiz news finds it's way onto her twitter feed.

There are people in the world focused on the narrowest, most meaningless things imaginable, and I feel a little bit sorry for them knowing what they're missing

It is simply sad, because the SJWs and their kind have so little to be proud of, except for attempting to attribute their personal focus of interest on every possible situation. Some might say, it is almost that that narrow field of interest is like a child who insists on everything being just so specific and is unable to make friends with others.

Let's face facts: if the best you can do, to develop your own opinion and identity in the world, is to simply attack others relentlessly, you are unduly paranoid that everything is somehow, someway, referring back to your narrow field of interest. I think a lot of these SJW need some sort of intervention (psychological).

Couldn't agree more. I was buzzing with excitement watching it unfold. Takes a lot to get me worked up like that. What an incredible, overwhelming thing that is happening and it passes by so many people.

The fact they could rendezvous with this thing I find amazing and even more amazing the fact they can communicate with it from that distance,even more amazing again is their ability to see it with telescopes.

Just saw the clip of him crying while apologising. It's sad, because he was probably crying from the frustration of someone taking what was likely the happiest day of his life and ****ting on it with ridiculous agendas by making him into a villain. Petty cunts, those type of people.

In fact that entire article offends me. I'm female with a degree and PhD in Physics. To insinuate that I was actively "blocked" or discouraged from studying Physics is insulting to me and insulting to every excellent male I've studied under or worked alongside.

While promoting female involvement in STEM is important, articles like that are retrograde.

After years and years and years of work, a probe was successfully put on a fúckin' comet.

But instead, here were are talking about a benign shirt worn by one of it's scientist who has had probably one of the most proudest moments in his life completely soiled over the reactions.

That video of him sobbing and apologising considering the monumental milestone he was a part of is depressing.

Absolutely pathetic behaviour from those painting him as some kind of sexist monster, this article and the accompanying supporters do more to demean women in science than that guy's garish shirt.

The internet definitely has become absolutely loaded with abuse towards women lately, to the point where it's quite disturbing actually and on the verge of seriously getting out of control. Also a lot of the articles that speak out against it (blogs or otherwise) do have valid points that need to be made.

This isn't one of them however. I actually can't believe such a deal has been made out of this that it has effectively ruined what should be the highlight of the guy's working life. It seems more bitter and spiteful than constructive. The guy's years of input to that project is going to offer more to the world than a nit-picking blog piece that probably took half an hour to write ever will. He shouldn't forget that.
