Why is a block of butter still 454g / 1lb and that silly shape that fails to fit into any butter tray?

At a guess I would say that it's probably to do with hydraulic foodstuff brick production machinery, and the size and cost of it. It's probably much more pleasant and productive, not to mention a sight cheaper, to stick with the old librae.

"How do you like you eggs?" Well I thought it would be a cute way to propose,
but little did I realise it would be the first thing we would argue about.

"If you're going to have eggs, you must use REAL butter", she said,
and of course she was right.

Still... it was worth the row! :)

I would rather use 1950s automatic transmission fluid thickened with Vaseline than allow such a concoction into the house. Be off with you, harlot! :D

Within the next few years 3D printers will be used to make 500g, to 2 places of decimal, blocks of butter.

Mmm. And all you'll have to do is keep the hopper filled with little butter pellets, which the various manufacturers will re-tool for at colossal expense because after all they're not eejits, are they?? Or you could just buy a furkan pound a' buther! :pac::pac::pac:

Surely the question should be "why do butter tray manufacturers make butter trays that can't accommodate butter?"

Or why do people buy butter dishes that are too small?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

Well, all that butter that is sold in 1lb is usually not even butter, but a block of Vegetable fat. Read what it is made off.
If you want a real butter check the smaller blocks and read the content. Those are more expensive and smaller, but those are actually made out of milk/cream. In tesco they got them wraped in white paper. Proper butter tastes waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better.

That a really interesting question after all milk is sold in litters and we are suppose to be metric so why is butter still sold in 1lb...454g is such a random amount.

Because we'd have to have a referendum to change it, and an administrative body would be set up to implement the change which would bring about jobs for relatives of politicians who would be on upwards of 60k a year for doing nothing.

Most butter dishes only seem designed for half pounds of butter, which is fine if you buy single half pound blocks but a nightmare if you slice a pound block in half.
