To the industry people on here (If there's any left!)

I have money to spend on commercial gym equipment for the club i work in. Obvioulsy, I have lots of ideas about what to get but...

Has anyone seen anything in trade shows or health clubs around the world that blew them away? I'm mainly looking for cardio equipment and interactive fitness.

There's lots of gimmicky stuff out there!

    Thanks

I'm not an 'industry expert' but it sounds like you're looking for something with a 'wow factor', but gym equipment doesn't normally wow people. It's not like a new gadget or device which serves a purpose which could be done easier, because a calorie burned is a calorie burned, and a weight lifted is a weight lifted. No piece of equipment will help you workout by doing less work because that's what training is about, you can't cheat your body. If you're looking for something to entertain people while they workout, I don't really see the point; most people will listen to music, if they need entertaining at all.

If I were you I'd look no further than a few treadmills, rowing machines or bikes for cardio, and plenty of free weights, pull ups and dipping bars, and maybe the odd cable machine. Anything else is unnecessary expense I'd say.

    Have you got any of those light boards? Something like this;

    batak-pro2.jpg

I'd love to see someone put together something like that, with a screen in the middle which every now and again spits out a few random bodyweight exercises.

Eg: 10/15 different light flashes, 7 burpees, 8 light flashes, 4 squat jumps etc etc

That would be a really cool little piece of kit.

I'm looking at it, but concerned its a bit gimmicky? I like your idea of how to use it, but will people use it by themselves like that?

Definitely getting a couple of these. An old machine, but still brilliant workout

Anything you buy at this stage will be a bit gimmicky tho no...?

....and I'd day they'll use it about as well as they use any bit of gym kit (poorly!)

A lot if interactive stuff is gimmicky tbh.

    Fir cardio
The concept2 variations and air-dyne bikes are very good.

Versa climber is ok. It needs to be set to the right resistance of else you go nowhere. Same applies to the rope climber.
Unlike the treadmill, bike or rower. People need to be shown this at times

Apparently a lot more robust than an air dyne; http://www.wolverson-fitness.co.uk/ASSAULT-AIR-BIKE_A1GMGO.aspx

That's the one we use here also. Just called it air dyne out of habit.

Where I work is after getting one of these in http://www.rugged-interactive.co.uk/cardiowall
    CARDIOWALL%20046a.jpg

It has a few pre-programmed settings in it. Only had it a couple of weeks now but its useful to mix things up a bit and everyone from 9-30 year olds have found it enjoyable. Used it as part of a conditioning circuit and as a core circuit.

I think its a bit too gimmicky myself but the physios wanted it!!

    Seems gimmicky to me also.
It also doesn't strike me as a particularly physio/rehab friendly exercise either

Get a monolift, mastadon squat bar, texas deadlift bar, 400kg of ivanko calibrated steel plates, a forza comp bench, a couple of power bars and some rubber mats.

F*ck the gimmicks... hell if you had that stuff I'd re-join myself 10 years and a billion emails later :)

Now that you mention it, if you join today the manager said you wont be charged the €300 entrance fee. The offer is only on today though

What's the story with Irish Lifting, I think I might finally have control over spending the dosh to do up the gym Mmmmmmmmmmm GYM PORN

At the moment I am thinking
140kg Barbell set, under 300 euro on Irish lifting
    Heavy duty cage
3 Benches, 2 adjustable and one flat
    A few sets of DBs, maybe 20kg, 25kg, 30kg, 35kg, 40kg
A Dumbbell rack, seen nice one on Odin
    3 sleds
    3 sets of sprint bands
    2 farmers walks
    Protective flooring
    Few foam rollers
    3 sets Olympic Rings
Possibly a good Rower, depends on price

Possibly something fancy like a cable machine for single arm lat pulldown/rows/tricep/facepulls but not will see.

Protective flooring and some more Olympic plates would do me. At the moment they only have rubber olympic plates so I can only get 170kg on the bar. Actuall some cheap bumper plates would be nice

Buy a flat bench press for Westwood clontarf. They only have two now. One is **** and in the poxiest location (up against a wall that's beside water fountain and bins). I had someone knock off the bar when I was lifting off. Dat brown pants soon come.

Try to stay away from machines anyway. If you don't have them already, get as many Olympic platforms and power cages you can fit in there, make sure to get the tallest cages possible too for taller guys who want to do OHP. Also, if you don't already have DB's over 100lbs you should probably get that sorted

3 or 4 of these alongside each other would be sweet

I think my GHR was a good buy - it doesn't seem to have done anything for my squat or deadlift but I do enjoy using it especially when I'm not in the right frame of mind for lifting big scary rusty weights. I often superset GHRs with other exercises, it's also useful for when my hands are callused and sore and I don't feel like gripping a bar.

Strength shop in the UK. Mine is the standard one, not the "deluxe" model or the floor model.

I'd sell my girlfriend for one if I ever needed to replace mine.

Looks a bit flimsy tbh, esp for semi-commercial. I'd be inclined to talk to odin about their mini rigs at that price point. I've 4 in my glasnevin gym and they're rock solid (can get em without the joining sections!)

Atlas med balls from ranges 60kg to 250kg. Was in a gym in American where they had these and easily portable platforms of 40cm to 105cm, some decent conditioning and strength work can be done with them, and they are robust as hell!

Good shout. Played around with some "Dead Balls" recently. Filled with iron sand, up to 85kg. Awkward fckers to get up from the ground.
Can't only only imagine a 259kg one (or was it 250lbs?)

Strengthshop.co.uk have some heavy med balls, think up to 75kg

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 21,981 ✭✭✭✭Hanley

I think Rogue did the ones for the CF games a while ago too.

I'd be reluctant to put heavy med balls in a commercial gym because the only way to pick up is to round back em...
