Time's 'Which word should be banned in 2015'

So Time has released it's annual poll asking which word of 2014 should be banned for next year and surprisingly (Although I agree) Feminism is leading with almost 50% of the vote (15 possible options).

Twitter is erupting in a rage of bad logic, 'empowered women' and quotes like "why don't we just ban men from voting", another user asks why the editors "chose to assign such a high value to feminism", while another claims that she feels this is "a personal attack" against her by time magazine.

The inclusion of feminism in a list of slang words and memes gone bad doesn't really make sense, TBH.

As far as I know its based off the most popular words online and suggestions. Clearly it makes sense to include feminist when it is beating all the others from 3rd to last combined.

That's like saying ban the words 'vegan' 'Marxism' or 'neoliberalism' since some people get their knickers in a twist about the politics behind the word. We clearly aren't talking about the same thing when we compare annoyance with 'bae' or 'okthxbye' with contentious political topics...that is, unless one has an axe to grind which, of course, would never happen here... ;)

I think it should be this new word 'bae' that all the chung ones are saying. Shut up shut up shut up!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,168 ✭✭✭SeanW

Notice that "bossy" is also on the list. Which is bizarre considering that the feminists want to "ban bossy" because banning stuff is probably the "bossiest" thing a person can (try to) do.

Edit: What in the name of all that is holy does "Bae" mean?

    "bae"

I could rip the head off people who say it!!!

    ~ Probably:

    1. Christmas
Worked in a hipster agency in E1 whereby wearing a aul santa hat on the 24th was banned in case it offended the cardigan/sandal/guardian-reading^1 others of 'other or negligible beliefs systems'. Can only be refereed to now as 'holidays'.

    2. Trousers
To neutralise the possibility of defining who 'wears the trousers' in a domestic setting. Matching sarongs are only to be worn (in grey only).

    3. Revolution
These usually only come down from the sky, or are initiated by ^1 who have read the new £20 book from the funny chap with the long hair.

I'd be more in favour of banning certain words from being used by certain demogaphics:

Any Boss/Employer who uses "deadlines" or "thinking outside the box" and the other bs.
Teens who pronounce 'cool' as "kewwl" or any time they speak in a faux-American accent - a slap across the face may be more effective than a simple banning.
Banning Cork people from using "Do", "you", "know", "what", "I", "mean", like".

Plus a fecking bazillion KS. What it has served to do is bypass actual real world concerns that affect men and women, both separately and equally, y'know... us humans, into two dumbed down for the dumb fcuks "sides" where the nutters and the whingers and the extremists are speaking for the rest of us the loudest and getting too bloody much attention.

I tend to reserve more of a "Oh just go away FFS" feeling towards your third wave hipster "feminists", but that's only because they've been around for longer, seem to be more dug in and have more of a knockon effect at times. However, your second wave Men's rights and MGTOW(and PUA. Jesus...) types are equally as bloody irritating for me. And this bullshít meme is spreading all over the place. We're seeing it on Boards of late very clearly.

It seems, to me at least in the media and especially the online world, the meek won't inherit the earth, the loud narcissistic whiners will.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I think you are being unfair to the concept of mens rights. MGTOW is a legitimate choice which affects nobody but the individual. PUA is no different from self help books marketed on Oprah for women about 'How to catch a man' , ''the rules'' etc and plenty of other relationship books about manipulating men or the situation to your own advantage in your personal or business relationships. They are not really out to take away any of your personal freedom or remove your agency.

In the mainstream and only part of Mens Rights, the part which intersects with politics there are lots of issues which need to be addressed and feminists while saying they are for egalitarianism have never seriously taken up the challenge. No mens rights movement would exist in any meaningful way if important issues had been addressed ethically. I just see men trying to do the right thing for half the population who have been left behind in many ways - themselves because nobody else will. Male suicides outnumber female suicides hugely- by almost 5 to 1. And while sections of the population claim to care about family , no thought has been given by legislators for fathers - or the children who love and need their fathers.

Feminism started abroad. Looking across to see how it is getting on abroad might give us some clues about the direction it might be heading in here as Feminists run out of legitimate things to complain about ...

Can I ban two words when used in close proximity to each other:

    Trigger and warning

Absolute latte drinking, guardian reading, sandal wearing, poor little precious ears bull****. Because we're all so glad that some twat wants to spare us the trauma of reading what they've helpfully provided us with- seriously, if you're that worried just don't show it to is in the first place. you're role as a prophet isn't that important! We won't be offended!

Bae stands for "before anyone else". Can refer to love interest or close friend.

I'm ashamed to admit that I actually know what it means :o

    twerk

    selfie

    hashtag

    bestie / bff

    mansplaining

and people who talk and write in text speak
