One plus One....is it worth it?

    Hey guys.
Don't post here often or at all for that matter but I'm currently trying to decide whether or not to bite the bullet and get the One Plus One.

I've done my research on it with the likes of reviews online through YouTube . I've looked up other big spec phones but the price is the main thing that puts me off unless I went bill pay which I'm not to comfortable with mainly because all I hear is horror stories about bill pay. I have read the OPO owners thread but rather the owners themselves to give me a detailed summary of the pros cons from their own use.

So to simplify, I'm asking for OPO themselves to give me a quick insight into the pros and cons of the phone and to basically tell me is it worth it or not.

    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks in advance :)

Just go pay as you go. 48 is €10 a month for 300 minutes to mobile, 50 mins to landline, unlimited texts and 1GB of data.I never use the full 1GB. Its not 4G, but its still really fast.

There is hundreds of reviews online. Its the best spec phone for its price. They OPO only make a few dollars on each phone. So you arent going to find a better phone unless you spend a couple of hundred more

I'm on meteor unlimited everything right now and I'm pretty happy with that. I was with 48 for two years and being perfectly honest my experience with them was horrible. Although everyone differs in experience.

I've read a fair amount of reviews but want to hear from people who are currently using one and what they have to say. Im aware of the price and specs but I have heard of some negative feedback from the owners thread and online about screen issues etc and just want to know have the issues been fixed through updates before I go off and spend the money.

Because it is a fledgling off shot of oppo and the first phone they have made it will obviously have its cinks.
The invite system infuriated loads of potential customers but it is still quite easy to find a invite, or pre-order if need be. You are not going to please everyone all the time and I would say most of those whinging about the invite would be the same ones that would complain about the way the charger sits in the phone, * or some sh**e like that. Having been on the invite thread with myself and another we found loads would sign up asking for it but a lot of the time, people wouldnt buy at the time so closed down the invite list. You can still post on there looking for one and I am sure some kind soul will post you one.
Now onto the phone. Never rooted a phone in my life and coming from Htc and generics from china and the zopo 980+, I can say the battery life is wonderful, screen is stunning * words cannot describe how clear it looks and the size might take a while to get used to, but its clearly manageable. I have a bumper case on mine and a tempered glass screen. I figure if I am paying that money I want to protect it.
Yes there has been issues with a yellow tint but I havent seen any of the later ones being issued with it * might have been a first batch or something. Yes there are issues with the pinch and zoom, I have it occasionally but to be honest the price I paid for the phone I dont care 2 tots if it zooms out again, I just open said app again. Its no biggie to me.
Cyanagen is great, the amount of customisation that can be done is class, I havent had the time or bothered with everything that could be done but it really has a nice stock android feel to it, still though offering more, if that makes sense.

Camera - Using perfectly clear app I find the pictures were similar to my o-h find7 before it broke, that phone has a way of making images into 50mp images and there is an update that allows raw files to be saved. for a potential photographer this is important. Raw files are stunning to see and might mean nothing though. ( my o-h find7 broke, not my camera )
Call quality - Not had any issues though not used it with a bluetooth mic set.
Sound - music through bluetooth speaker, plug in speaker, plug in headphones and just lying on the counter has been amazing. using both google music and mx video player I can tell you it can get very loud, very quickly.
Ram and Rom. 100s of apps, loads of music and pictures * saving to raw files means the raw images save at around 10+mb! using perfectly clear it is quite possible to save 240+ images with 2 pushes of the button. pretty soon this will fill up your space but fear not, the 64gb and 3gb is more than enough.
Ergonomics - first time you get it in your hand it feels premium, the back casing feels wonderful and wont slip, the phone is very slim though so I prefer mine in a case. It might seem hard to use the first time and using one handed is not that easy for some people but I can still manage it with mine.

I am on tesco mobile, sim free and have had no issues with gps signals * using waze or google maps it has been able to find the few places I have needed the sat nav for. Hope this helps. As I said its my personal opinion, its open to others saying they agree or dont, but its how I feel. I have had the phone the best part of 4 months nearly and can honestly say, barring me getting the moto droid maxx, I will have this phone for a good long time, unless I get the oneplus 2 ;)

    Thanks for the feedback :)
What memory would you recommend 16 or 64gb?
I like big phones so phone size isn't a problem.
You have me sold on this anyway. Such good value and seems to be a good phone from what you're saying. Next is suss out a invite.

Thanks again man. Really appreciate it

you cant get the 16gb, its not worth it for the price you are better off getting the extra space for the tiny bit more money, especially when you consider it doesnt have a memory card slot

Yep I'm using my meteor 4g sim in it. I get LTE in most places.

I've got an OPO and have ordered 4 more for family and friends. I gave up on iphones a few years ago and now would class them as good beginners phones. If you spend a day a two tweaking the opo you can get it running exactly the way you want - no need to root it as cyanogenmod is so customisable. As I don't use the capacitive buttons I'd prefer a smaller chin but you can't have everything in a phone at this price. I did consider the G3 as it has the same size screen with a smaller form factor but was put off by reports of random shutdowns and the weird sharpening of text on coloured backgrounds.
There seems to be a blizzard of invites at the moment so would be a good time to order. My first 3 I got via Parcelmotel with no problems and am waiting for 2 more via mailboxde.com - should be here early next week. Didn't realise that I could have ordered both if them with the same invite so could have saved even more money :(

PS on Tesco mobile too €25 per month 10,000 minutes 10,000 texts and 15gb of 3G data - same coverage as O2

Very interested in one of these.

    Where does it ship from.

I have an address in UK so no issues there.

It seems really good - go for the 64gb version.

Cases for the phone - screen protectors are they sold by OPO or other re-sellers?

They don't sell cases on the OPO website however there is a nice number of cases available on Amazon that have been specifically made for the device. Bought the Tudia protective case myself, comes in 4-5 different colors and fits snugly around the bevels of the device which even adds extra protection to the screen.

I like the phone for what it is.. Yes there are better phones out there I will not disagree but what your getting when you buy the OPO is a top spec phone for that price. The camera is fantastic, loved the built in filters. The CPU can handle numerous applications with no time delay. Some people have reported that apps have crashed on them quite frequently, I haven't had that problem myself. Overall I feel like it's a great phone and the company have achieved something special with it's design it feels the business :)

Hi, i got one of these phones in december and i love it. my question is tho about the small cardboard that came with it. its flatpack and no instructions and managed to put most of it together but cant figure the rest, its driving me mad. it is a phone stand or some sort. there is nothing on the net about it, cheers

think it comes from England but could be wrong. Ordered one last night and being shipped to my mothers in the North, so no problem there. A lot of people here are using Parcel Motel and have delivered to one in the North and then have it sent down here.mjust make sure you are on the UK site (small flag on bottom right hand side of site)

Got an invite today and I think I'm ready to pull the plug and buy one. Just wondering how people find them with regards handling and putting them in your pocket? Would I be better off holding off for the one plus two? and finally if you do develop problens can it be fixed in Ireland or do you have to return it to oneplusone?
    Thanks in advance.

Returns must be made to OPO AFAIK. Handling is fine, fits in my jeans pocket and doesn't hinder my movements in the slightest.

What size phone are you used to?

I went from HTC One to Oneplus and the size doesn't bother me at all, fits comfortably in pockets and in hand.

Also to the OP: Yes, I love this phone. It's worth it.

I was a longtime iPhone user, I thought I was content with a phone that "just worked" until technology was going too quick for it to "just work" anymore. I'm a design student and so the design, form, interface and user experience of the iPhone appealed immensely to me. I spent a solid three months watching Youtube videos, reading blog reviews, 1/3/6 months reviews, reviews against iPhone and until I finally decided to grab an invite and purchase.

I am a VERY heavy power user of my phone, very tuned into twitter, listening to music 3/4 hours a day on spotify, I take an immense amount of photos and I like my brightness up full. I was carrying around a charger and plugging it in relentlessly everywhere I went and also carrying a portable battery pack wherever I went. My Oneplus One has NEVER died when I needed it. It lasted 10 hours of my kind of usage. I have no issues going out with 30-40% battery for a few hours because I know it will last. With iPhone the thought of those level of battery gave me anxiety itches.

I am honestly annoyed at myself for having suffered through having an iPhone for so long when a piece of technology like this was out there. It's stunningly designed. The interface is perfect, so usable and the user experience with cyanogen is flawless. You can have the interface as simplistic as the iOS or as convenient as you like, decked out with widgets, shortcuts etc. No matter how much memory I use, how many apps I have running, the phone runs a seamlessly as the first day I got it.

Although its a big phone, I could still write messages with one hand by dragging my thumb to the letters which is convenient enough, but this isn't for one handed use. But it most definitely isn't a deal breaker. I use my phone with both hands generally anyway.
Bite the bullet. It'll be so worth it.

I got one plus one two weeks ago and i have to say i'm pretty happy with it.

After showing my friends they are interested in getting one as well!!!

There will be no invite sale on the 20th of January for peeps who want to get it.

After having it for two weeks
    pro's:
-great battery life -> wifi/3g 2 days not a problem (with little use got 3days)
-Great spec for price you pay
    -Great Design
-No crappy apps come with it.
    -Great Camera

    Cons:
-Dialer/Contacts without any themes/app a bit annoying (I moved from Galaxy to OnePlus) - had to get the app as standard one was very bad for me...
-From time to time it freezes for like 2secs -> but had similar issue on Galaxy so maybe it's Android issue.

Cannot find any other faults yet.

-Size -> this is neutral zone -> It's good for using phone etc -> but than it comes putting into the pocket it's a bit of the issue, sometimes it's annoying... (and i'm not using any cover...)

In my phone career I have had

    Nokia 100 analogue
Some unknown brand that took the credit card size sim card
    Ericssons T28
    Nokia 3310
Nokia 7650, The first Nokia Camera Phone
    Nokia 6610
Nokia 6680 First 3g Nokia x 2 (Dropped one in the Liffy)
Nokia N73, First Nokia with 3mb camera
    iphone 2g
    iphone 3g
    iphone 3gs
    iphone 4
    iPhone 4s
    Samsung Galaxy S4
    And the One Plus One

I can safely say the OPO is the best phone I ever owned.

I use the nova launcher and the phone is lightning fast. I've haven't had any issues with it at all.

Best thing about this phone is the music equaliser, really makes listening to music on it a dream.

Strongly considering getting one of these now. Being reared on Nokia since day one and recently ditching my Lumia 930 to experiment with Android by means of a Landvo L200, I can safely say I'm hooked. I use a Nexus 9 also but I've been let down by the very poor audio quality of the L200 headphone capability compared to the Nexus and the Lumia, to such an extent that I tether the L200 to the Nexus and listen to spotify through that. I even went as far as to by a bluetooth receiver that I could plug my headphones into, thinking that might sort the problem out, but nah. From what I read here, people are happy with the sound from the headphone socket. I have a high end set of headphones and I expect sound quality as good as the nexus.

Check out the vivo xplay 3s. Made by the same company as the 1+1 but its built as a music phone and likely has the best speaker/headphone quality out there. It's about $460 though

    Comparison with 1+1 here https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/my-thoughts-on-the-oneplus-one-oppo-find7a-and-vivo-xplay-3s.44906/

They have some real nice case's and accessories on the OPO site. Why do you recommended Amazon?

Amazon sell cases by Tudia which have the best voted OPO protective case out currently. The other accessories can be found cheaper on Amazon also e.g. screen protector, power bank, earphones. If it's just the case your looking for research first watch a few youtube videos.

Why not get the official case, screen protector etc. on the OnePlus site when you buy the phone? That way you are guaranteed that they are going to be a perfect fit for the phone and they will come delivered at the same time as the phone. No messing with Amazon then.

The official case from there costs more, as does the screen protector. As well as that other cases from amazon and the likes offer more protection. If I have a phone that is worth so much, I want to protect it. The cases just protect the back, not the actual glass/ screen. which if you drop any phone you will realise that not every phone manages to fall on its back, with the screen up.
Its entirely up to you who you buy from. but I would personally review something before I bought it. And also there are a lot more accessories now than when i first bought my phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,209 ✭✭✭maximoose

The official case is a bit too brittle IMO, the two corners of mine have snapped away on mine - one from dropping, and the other from snagging on my jacket when I was pulling it out of my pocket

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23 xProGamingx

As stated above, brittle don't fully cover the phone. you'll only be waiting under a week for the accessories from Amazon it will arrive before the phone.

Hey guys! A colleague in work has an invite for this phone. Do you think I should go for it? I'm already used to a Samsung s4 but this is even bigger. Is it awkward to use? I've seen his phone, but want to see what its like for daily usage? I'm female, 5' 8 so not tiny, but is it the type of thing you'd get used to? It's huge!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23 xProGamingx

MissBehaviour I can tell you its without a doubt one of the best phones I've gotten my hands on. It looks to be too big but it's not. Fits in my pocket without sticking out. I can reach all areas of the keyboard when holding it with one hand. I'd go for one if I were you!

At this stage of the game, id hold out for the next one in a few months.

It will obviously have better spec, but the key is the Band Support for Mobile Operators will be standardised .

    Oh yeah and Android Lollipop

Plus 2 is 6 months away at least I thought. Thought I saw August. If you applied the logic of waiting for the next phone all the time you'd never buy one.

Worth it for the battery life alone nevemind the fact it's the nicest device I've ever used:

From that link, this line killed all interest for me.....
Pei revealed during the interview that OnePlus has a dedicated software team to help develop operating systems in-house. That suggests OnePlus is looking to make some major changes for the OnePlus Two handset and according to what Pei said it’s likely it’ll be a HEAVILY SKINNED version of Android.

I paid express delivery and it was given postal address up North in 2 days. Didn't expect it to be that fast and have to wait till Friday before picking it up from my parents. Ahhhh

As i posted in another thread, it looks like OPO is not going to use the most common and best frequency acrsoo Europe - Band 20(800Hz)
Yeah, Vodafone use band 20 (800Hz) according to their CS Manager

    Also Wiki backs that up

Meteor use both Band 3(1800Hz) and Band 20(800Hz) according to their CS rep http://forums.meteor.ie/t5/Meteor-4G-Getting-started/What-LTE-4G-frequency-bands-does-Meteor-use/td-p/135724

not sure that vodafone has 4g going yet but i moved to 3 when i got the phone and 4g works great in dublin, and depends then around the country, usually fairly good tho, very happy with it.

It works absolutely perfectly on Meteor LTE. I can attest to that.

    No Issues.

changed Sim to 4G and worked straight away.

Oneplus 2 has been delayed until Q3 this year, so there's life in the One for a while yet.
