That would be a very sad thing to watch!

Also how I can prevent Boards.ie spamming me?

Do I need to change my email to some mailinator or other SPAM email provider? Or is there some options to prevent Boards.ie send me notifications to my email box. In forum inbox these notifications is okay, but I really do not want to see them in my email inbox!

The Close Account function would take care of this immediately.

I already know this function. But still many thanks for the helpful post!

So we have two options here at the moment:
    1. use SPAM email (mailinator, freemail, ...).
    2. close account.

Anything else? Something like most common forums have -> "Do not send emails".

Funniest and dumbest same time! Yeah yeah I know that new generation is kind of dumb today. And yeah I also know that Irish people are afraid of computers and internet. And they do not have enough experienced IT security, webmasters and administrators. So nothing new. But still some stupid things surprise me again and again.

Perhaps you share your knowledge with me?

Because this one does not work:
    > CONTROL PANEL
    > Settings & Options
    > Edit Options
    > Messaging & Notification

    - Receive Friendship Request Email <- disabled
    - Default Thread Subscription Mode <- No email notifications
    - Receive Email Notification of New Private Messages <- disabled

Default Thread Subscription Mode: No email notifications should be the one I needed, but I still get these emails. So what did I miss? And where?

So if you know, then maybe you can share with me what you know? I would appreciate your help.

From the user with 10 posts. Which of those things did you want to use? :)

The fact is that those things were being abused by members who signed up to spam. Most spammers won't want to post 50 times before they can 'legitimately' spam. I have seen a reduction in spam since these measures were introduced (particularly the link restriction), so it does work.

Get involved in a busy AH or TV thread (or Motors, or Politics, or Film... you get the idea), and you'll hit 50 posts in no time.

This is one of the best recent features added to Boards. The cut down in spam has been incredible (and I used to see plenty of it in Sports forums where people were signing up from all over the planet to provide links to illegal streams)

If someone starts to postcount spam they quickly find themselves banned, but that is very rare and certainly much less common then the problems this feature have now pretty much done away with

When you manually follow a thread (by clicking 'Follow Thread'), you still need to select 'no email notification'. The default option at the moment is 'Instant (as it's posted in)'.

When someone posting something to thread.

Dades has just posted the following in the "Funniest and dumbest thing I ever seen!" thread, in the Feedback forum:

You won't get any more new post notifications until you visit the forum.
    <--

That sort of emails. Already opted everything out, but the problem is still there.

I guess that I should go and try enable and disable these options again. Maybe it will fix the problem. I hope. Or clear cookies.

Over the past 15 years I have moderated and administrated several forums. And I have a completely opposite experience. Specially last 2 years. Now users who need, for something, a certain number of posts... They will post lots of posts. 2/3 of these posts is not necessary at all, they are just trying to get that number of posts they needed.

And now the important part -> SPAMMERS just copying some posts from forum and post again. <- Pure SPAM.

Also I do not understand how disabling signature and links is something what helps you fight against SPAMMERS. Specially signatures? Just don't allow bigger pictures in signatures, than necessary. And about VIAGRA links, there is many easy ways to prevent spam bots to post these things.

Can't have been very successful forums if they went into administration.

If you changed your subscription type after you had posted here, you are still subbed to the thread with emails and need to update the subscription here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/subscription.php?do=viewsubscription

All subscriptions should read 'None', change them if not.

One must be a member for 10 days plus have >50 posts in order to post images, links, etc. Most lose interest before that has been achieved. It has greatly reduced the amount of spam on this site.

So what you're saying Niamh is that despite the expert opinion of the OP you have empirical evidence that this worked. Your numbers must be wrong :pac:

Well that can't be right, op clearly states

Have the numbers been independently verified?

Although the measures appear to have helped in a decrease in spammers, I personally have noticed an increase of knobheads.

Could there be a correlation? Have we any figures that might confirm or otherwise?

Nope but it uses the setting from your User CP, or at least mine does. I have it set to no notifications and regularly follow threads on touch but don't receive emails

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 26,403 Mod ✭✭✭✭Peregrine

Yeah, I don't get any e-mails when I manually follow a thread from the touch site.

Was the 30 days of membership(or was it 15?) rule removed for posting links, images etc.?

    Spam notification threads:

    -10,000 posts between 21/12/2011 and 22/05/2013 (17 months). http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056491247

-4,070 posts between 22/05/2013 and today (just over 17 months). http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056955066

    Savage improvement. The system works.

you know while on the subject, the unsubscribe option really ought to be linked in email communications; its a standard in most automated email systems now, especially most junkmail. It might be an FTC obligation to have the option included for typical junkmailers like retailers etc. and normally the option only involves a couple clicks and doesnt need a login by the user.

There is an Unfollow link? Or do you mean an "unsubscribe from all" link?
