FA Cup Super Dooper Thread

Tomorrow night sees the first FA Cup tie to be screened by the BBC since the 2007/8 season which climaxed in a win for Portsmouth. Its in the first round proper and features Warrington Town v Exeter City with an 7.55 KO on BBC 2 (not sure about regional variations), there is a four division gap in class and the home side are struggling in Northern Premier League so the away side ought to shade it but it'll probably be a bit like a rugby pitch at Cantilever Park given the current weather and you can be sure with the cameras at attendance it'll be intense.

Warrington are managed by Peter Reids brother Shaun. Exeter's manager is Paul Tisdale who at 41 still has a squad number.

Sunday might be fun, the BBC are doing what many wish Soccer Saturday would do

The have a final score special 8 games on sunday all kicking off at the same time and they will have a studio and will cut away to each game if anything happens at it

So its their attempt at NFL Red zone, where they switch between games as scoring situations develop.

It works well in American football as the progress towards a 'scoring opportunity " is more clearly defined in American football.

It will be interesting how it pans out.

I doubt it, more likely to just switch to the goal celebration and a replay or penalties and close free kicks, it would get messy the other way with so many matches.

Exactly, it would be a mess otherwise.

I love matches that have big underdogs. Have Warrington - Exeter streaming. First time at this stage for Warrington, 4 divisions below Exeter.

And Warrington are 1-0 up after 6 minutes

Exeter's striker is former Cork City player Graham Cummins.

Warrington Town captained by David Mannix who I vaguely recall from the Liverpool reserves.

They started well but Exeter ended the side with the more cutting possession you can only think a goal is coming.

He actually frightened me on one occasion when it was quiet and he got so overexcited about nothing.

Congratulations to Warrington, but a cup run would have done Exeter's finances the world of good, they are in dire straits. A team full of youth players and journeymen, lot of them lads won't be earning any more, probably less in fact, than the solicitor or plasterer etc that plays for Warrington.

Great match to watch. How Exeter didn't score I don't know. Huge shift put in by Warrington, felt like they all had a bout of cramp at some point in the final 20 mins. Pitch was very poor I thought. Cracking cup tie though.

Just looking through the results only one leaps out - Cheltenham Town 5 - 0 Swindon Town, I can only assume the in form League One side were talking this lightly.

    Swindon (1/1)

Maidstone knocked Stevenage out of the FA cup. Bit of a turn up for the books. League 2 has taken a bit of a battering first round this year.

When was the last time Man Utd played a non-premiership team? Seems very rare.

Reading in 2012/13. Southampton and Crawley in 2010/11. Games against teams from below the premier are rare though. Utd don't usually get easy ties. They've had Liverpool and City twice plus Arsenal and Chelsea since 2010/11.

3 round starts tonight. Tomorrow only 3 EPL teams in action and no live tv games? A far cry from the heyday of the cup when 3rd round saturday was one of the highlights of the sporting calendar.

They should just make it a midweek competition and do away with replays

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,434 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

I'm delighted coverage is back on BBC. Everything about the ITV coverage was utterly intolerable most of all the utterly dreadful ad ridden highlights roundup on a Saturday. I can see myself following the Cup again with interest this year.

I've got to say it feels like the magic is back now that it's on the BBC. Is there seriously no game broadcast on Saturday? FA cup games on Sundays are always a bit anti-climatic.

I'm surprised BBC didn't choose the Blyth Spartans game. In fact, which station has first pick?

This romance of the cup stuff really boils my piss. Looking at the winners over the last 20 years, apart from Wigan or Portsmouth (both PL teams at the time) there hasn't been a surprising winner of the competition.

Nice to see 3pm Fa Cup Matches again.

And their showing Man City V Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

Blame the new year fixtures for only 3 premier league teams playing today and none of those on tv as they were all moved from Sunday to Tuesday
