I came across this tutorial .

It refers to xcode 5 (I think) but I can only download xcode 6. Is there anything similar for xcode 6? Looking for a tutorial for the basics

A quick scan through that and nothing jumps out as being all that different for Xcode 6. You should be fine following it.

Ray Wederlich's site is full of great tutorials.

the first page of how to start the project in xcode 5 is different to that of xcode 6 ie a empty application.

Empty Application is under "Other" in Xcode 6.

There aren't many earth shattering differences between 5 and 6.
