Will Ireland ever win Eurovision again?

Ireland has the current record of Eurovision song contest wins with 7, including a phenomenal 3 in a row in the early 90's (93' 94' and 94'). I remember as a kid that those events were pretty big.

Everybody would be in at home watching them, listening to the dry wit of Terry Wogan and we would all be delighted if Ireland did win, and also equally disgusted when other countries gave us **** all points.

I know that the competition has changed, and not for the better, but it's not inconceivable that, with the immense musical talent in this country, we could send over an act that has a good chance of winning?

Hosting these events is expensive but not a complete waste of money. It's a chance to show Ireland to the world. I'd love it if we won again. I'd really like to see how we pick entries completely revamped, something like what Sweden has with the Melodifestivalen.

It would be a much better way to showcase original and native musical talent than X Factor, that's for sure.

No, and I don't understand for the life of me why we even enter. Competitions with scores based on phone in votes are utterly valueless.

You clearly have a lot to worry about OP.

It's much the same as a vote in a General Election.

No. Too many cliques now, especially with the Eastern European entrants and the Baltic States all looking after each other. Now if I decide to reimpose the Iron Curtain, I think Ireland might just start winning again.

    People in glass houses...

Anyway I'd question the 94 and 94 wins.

It's half jury vote now, which I'd say would work in out favour.
I think the problem is a lot of Irish talent doesn't want to be associated with the Contest, whereas on countries where it's still new and quite popular, they attract their top artists. You often hear that the acts are big in their own, and surrounding, countries and this is their way to break into Western Europe.

As soon as they made the switch to televoting we stopped winning.

I think recently however it's changed to 50% tele 50% jury.

If we really wanted to win again we could no problem. Just enter another equivelent of Eimear Quinn and "The Voice" or Norway and Secret Gardens "Nocturne". Norways winning entry had Irish members of the group and a Celtic sound.

Even the Eastern Bloc love the oul Irish Celtic sound which would circumvent their bloc voting.

RTE should have arranged for the win last year to coincide with The Gathering to give an extra boost to Tourism.

    Where would we stage it?

We'd gallop away with it with this..

Eh?? You're asking this because we have so many LESS??? world class venues to stage it then we did back in the mid 90's??

As long as it's not Dervish.

The bloc voting problem is overstated anyway and serves as a handy excuse for dismal failure. A strong song and performance wins it out every year.

That's a good question actually, the 02 probably wouldn't fit their capacity requirements and afaik they don't allow outdoor venues.

Our glory days are past. I predict we'll win at least once more, possibly before 2120.

Ireland can win it again. Take a short porno film and make it poppy and high energy and we're in with a good shout.

We should actually enter that song. It would be a nice two fingers to what was now become a joke.

We probably won't. The only way we'd win is if we invaded another country and became friends and then maybe in 50 years they'd give us 12 points. Or we get invaded and then become friends. Why do you think that England is the only ones that give us high points half the time?

Who should we invade? I pick France.

Sorry guise it was 92, 93 and 94.

French armed forces would be too strong for us. Iceland is a more realistic target. I predict less than 1 month from boots on the ground to the tricolour being raised over parliament buildings in Reykjavik.

The only winning song of recent years that I really rate is Loreen and Euphoria.
Ireland needs something upto date like that, something that is quality.

I don't see us winning for a long time but it's nothing to do with bloc voting, rather the (lack of) quality of the entries we send. Send a good singer, with a good song, and you'll likely do well.*

It's irritating that people thinking we should pull the plug just 'cause we don't win it constantly any more. Until this year Austria only won the Eurovision once and that was back in the sixties. The Netherlands failed to qualify from the semis eight years in a row and managed to finish second this year. Hell, Portugal have never finished in the top five after 40-something attempts but they still participate!

*Unless you're France. Nobody likes France anymore for some reason.

Maybe but it requires Putin continuing his meglomanical plans to reestablishing the Russian empire.

I wish they'd just rebrand it the EasternEurovision and leave everyone west of Berlin out of it. It would do your head in.

Nope, too much of a circle-jerk with the Eastern countries and Scandinavia.

I thought Dustin The Turkey was the perfect two fingers, for the joke of a competition the Eurovision has become. Sending him over annually would be an appropriate move imo.
